Facebook employs psychologist whose firm sold data to Cambridge Analytica

This Story Has SPIDER LEGS. #StayWokeFolks

"The co-director of a company that harvested data from tens of millions of Facebook users before selling it to the controversial data analytics firms Cambridge Analytica is currently working for the tech giant as an in-house psychologist.

Joseph Chancellor was one of two founding directors of Global Science Research (GSR), the company that harvested Facebook data using a personality app under the guise of academic research and later shared the data with Cambridge Analytica.

He was hired to work at Facebook as a quantitative social psychologist around November 2015, roughly two months after leaving GSR, which had by then acquired data on millions of Facebook users.

Chancellor is still working as a researcher at Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters in California, where psychologists frequently conduct research and experiments using the company’s vast trove of data on more than 2 billion users.

It is not known how much Chancellor knew of the operation to harvest the data of more than 50 million Facebook users and pass their information on to the company that went on to run data analytics for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Chancellor was a director of GSR along with Aleksandr Kogan, a more senior Cambridge University psychologist who is said to have devised the scheme to harvest Facebook data from people who used a personality app that was ostensibly acquiring data for academic research.

On Friday, Facebook announced it had suspended both Kogan and Cambridge Analytica from using the platform, pending an investigation.

Facebook said in a statement Kogan “gained access to this information in a legitimate way and through the proper channels” but “did not subsequently abide by our rules” because he passed the information on to third parties. Kogan maintains that he did nothing illegal and had a “close working relationship” with Facebook.

Facebook appears to have taken no action against Chancellor – Kogan’s business partner at the time their company acquired the data, using an app called thisisyourdigitallife.

Cambridge Analytica – a company owned by the hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, and headed at the time by Trump’s key adviser Steve Bannon – used the data to build sophisticated psychological profiles of US voters."

Facebook may have violated FTC privacy deal, say former federal officials...

Source: Washington Post

Two former federal officials who crafted the landmark consent decree governing how Facebook handles user privacy say the company may have violated that decree when it shared information from tens of millions of users with a data analysis firm that later worked for President Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Such a violation, if eventually confirmed by the Federal Trade Commission, could lead to many millions of dollars in fines against Facebook, said David Vladeck, who as the director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection oversaw the investigation of alleged privacy violations by Facebook and the subsequent consent decree resolving the case in 2011. He left that position in 2012.

On Sunday morning, Vladeck said in an interview with The Washington Post that Facebook’s sharing of data with Cambridge Analytica “raises serious questions about compliance with the FTC consent decree.”

The FTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment Sunday morning.

Facebook has denied violating the consent decree when it allowed an app developer working for Cambridge Analytica to gain access to information about estimated tens of millions of people. The group included both the 270,000 Facebook users who downloaded a psychological testing app and the Facebook “friends” of those people. This included the preferences those friends had expressed by hitting the widely used “like” button on social media posts or news stories.

In a statement Saturday, Facebook said, “We reject any suggestion of the violation of the consent decree. We respected the privacy settings that people had in place. Privacy and data protections are fundamental to every decision we make.”

Vladeck, now a professor at Georgetown Law, said violations of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation, meaning that if news reports that the data of 50 million people were shared proves true, the company’s possible exposure runs into the trillions of dollars. Vladeck said that such a fine is unlikely but that the final penalty still could be very large.

“That’s the maximum exposure, though it’s not clear to me that the agency would insist on that kind of a penalty,” he said.

The FTC issue is rising as lawmakers in both the United States and Britain call for answers from Cambridge Analytica and Facebook — in some cases demanding that Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg personally appear at legislative hearings.

The FTC consent decree required that users be notified and that they explicitly give their permission before data about them is shared beyond the privacy settings they have established. The developer of the app sought permission from those who downloaded it but not their Facebook friends. The app, called “thisisyourdigitallife,” offered personality predictions and billed itself on Facebook as “a research app used by psychologists.”

If You Don't Know, Now You Know...This Happened in Election 2016 and This Is What Turned The Election...

"In a fantastic profile in The Guardian, Wylie revealed himself to be the architect of the technology that Cambridge Analytica used to develop targeted advertising strategies that arguably helped sway the U.S. presidential election.

A self-described gay, Canadian vegan, Wylie eventually became — as he told The Guardian — the developer of “Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare mindfuck tool.”

The goal, as The Guardian reported, was to combine social media’s reach with big data analytical tools to create psychographic profiles that could then be manipulated in what Bannon and Cambridge Analytica investor Robert Mercer allegedly referred to as a military-style psychological operations campaign — targeting U.S. voters."

Facebook in storm over Cambridge Analytica data scandal

Source: Financial Times

Facebook is under increasing pressure to explain how data collected on 50m users were exploited for political gain, following claims that data firm Cambridge Analytica used the leaked information to help Donald Trump win the US presidency.

Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic are calling on the social network to reveal more information about how Cambridge Analytica, which has close ties to Steve Bannon, Mr. Trumps former chief strategist, harvested data of mostly US voters.

British MP Damian Collins has asked Mark Zuckerberg, Facebooks chief executive, to personally testify in an investigation into how the social network was also used in political campaigns including the Brexit referendum. Mr Collins said it was time for Mr Zuckerberg to stop hiding behind his Facebook page.

Mr. Collins on Sunday accused Alexander Nix, Cambridge Analyticas chief executive, of deliberately misleading a committee hearing last month when he told parliament that his firm did not use any Facebook data. Mr. Nix told the Financial Times at the weekend that he stood by his comments, despite a former employee turned whistleblower claiming he had evidence to the contrary.

Mr. Nix said: We deleted our Facebook data at the time we were alerted to a possible contravention of Facebook data policies.

When asked why he did not disclose this to parliament, he said: They didnt ask me that. They asked me if you used Facebook data in your model. The answer to that question is no.

This is serious folks. Wanna know what happened during Election 2016?

It all starts and ends with Facebook, The Mercer's Cambridge Analytica, Russia, Steve Bannon and Donald Trump (plus other players on the Trump Team). As the Whistleblower from Facebook (whose account on FB is now SUSPENDED on FB -- interesting timing don't ya think -) now says and read this one twice if needed:

"A self-described gay, Canadian vegan, Wylie eventually became as he told The Guardian the developer of Steve Bannon's psychological warfare mindfuck tool.

The goal, as The Guardian reported, was to combine social media reach with big data analytical tools to create psychographic profiles that could then be manipulated in what Bannon and Cambridge Analytica investor Robert Mercer allegedly referred to as a military-style psychological operations campaign targeting U.S. voters."

THANK YOU President Obama For Trying To WARN US About This.....

Obama’s secret struggle to punish Russia for Putin’s election assault - JUNE 23, 2017

"Early last August, an envelope with extraordinary handling restrictions arrived at the White House. Sent by courier from the CIA, it carried “eyes only” instructions that its contents be shown to just four people: President Barack Obama and three senior aides.

HACKING DEMOCRACY
Timeline
The White House debated various options to punish Russia, but facing obstacles and potential risks, it ultimately failed to exact a heavy toll on the Kremlin for its election interference.

• Graphic: The main findings, highlighted

• Next: Doubting the intelligence, Trump pursues Putin and leaves a Russian threat unchecked

Inside was an intelligence bombshell, a report drawn from sourcing deep inside the Russian government that detailed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s direct involvement in a cyber campaign to disrupt and discredit the U.S. presidential race.

But it went further. The intelligence captured Putin’s specific instructions on the operation’s audacious objectives — defeat or at least damage the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, and help elect her opponent, Donald Trump.

At that point, the outlines of the Russian assault on the U.S. election were increasingly apparent. Hackers with ties to Russian intelligence services had been rummaging through Democratic Party computer networks, as well as some Republican systems, for more than a year. In July, the FBI had opened an investigation of contacts between Russian officials and Trump associates. And on July 22, nearly 20,000 emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee were dumped online by WikiLeaks.

But at the highest levels of government, among those responsible for managing the crisis, the first moment of true foreboding about Russia’s intentions arrived with that CIA intelligence.

The material was so sensitive that CIA Director John O. Brennan kept it out of the President’s Daily Brief, concerned that even that restricted report’s distribution was too broad. The CIA package came with instructions that it be returned immediately after it was read. To guard against leaks, subsequent meetings in the Situation Room followed the same protocols as planning sessions for the Osama bin Laden raid.

It took time for other parts of the intelligence community to endorse the CIA’s view. Only in the administration’s final weeks in office did it tell the public, in a declassified report, what officials had learned from Brennan in August — that Putin was working to elect Trump.

[Putin ‘ordered’ effort to undermine faith in U.S. election and help Trump, report says]

Over that five-month interval, the Obama administration secretly debated dozens of options for deterring or punishing Russia, including cyberattacks on Russian infrastructure, the release of CIA-gathered material that might embarrass Putin and sanctions that officials said could “crater” the Russian economy."

Obama Administration Rushed to Preserve Intelligence of Russian Election Hacking - MARCH 17, 2017

"WASHINGTON — In the Obama administration’s last days, some White House officials scrambled to spread information about Russian efforts to undermine the presidential election — and about possible contacts between associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump and Russians — across the government. Former American officials say they had two aims: to ensure that such meddling isn’t duplicated in future American or European elections, and to leave a clear trail of intelligence for government investigators.

American allies, including the British and the Dutch, had provided information describing meetings in European cities between Russian officials — and others close to Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin — and associates of President-elect Trump, according to three former American officials who requested anonymity in discussing classified intelligence.

Separately, American intelligence agencies had intercepted communications of Russian officials, some of them within the Kremlin, discussing contacts with Trump associates.

The disclosures about the contacts came as new questions were raised about Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s ties to the Russians. According to a former senior American official, he met with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, twice in the past year. The details of the meetings were not clear, but the contact appeared to contradict testimony Mr. Sessions provided Congress during his confirmation hearing in January when he said he “did not have communications with the Russians.”

White House announces retaliation against Russia: Sanctions, ejecting diplomats - JANUARY 2, 2017

"President Barack Obama took unprecedented steps Thursday to retaliate against alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, prompting vows from Russian authorities that Moscow will respond in kind.

The administration described Russia's involvement as "Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities" and sanctioned four Russian individuals and five Russian entities for what it said was election interference. The administration also ordered 35 Russian diplomats to leave the country and two Russian compounds are being closed.

This is the first time the names of Russian officials involved in the hacking have become public on the sanctions list.

"Russia's cyber activities were intended to influence the election, erode faith in US democratic institutions, sow doubt about the integrity of our electoral process, and undermine confidence in the institutions of the US government," a White House statement said. "These actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

According to statements from the White House and the Treasury Department, the government has sanctioned nine entities and individuals over their alleged interference in the election: the GRU and the FSB, which are two Russian intelligence services; four individual officers of the GRU; and three companies that provided material support to the GRU's operations.

The US also separately sanctioned two Russian individuals, Evgeniy Mikhailovich Bogachev and Alexey Belan, for using cyber-enabled means to allegedly cause misappropriation of funds and personal identifying information. They've long been sought by the FBI."

And Of Course This Too!

Thank You, Mr. REAL POTUS Barack Obama! America would saved itself a lot of HEADACHE and PAIN if they LISTENED TO YOU when you told US to ELECT Hillary Clinton ---- and never, ever put Donald Trump anywhere near 1600 Penn. Ave.

As Of Today....Is The Sentence (Tweet In This Case) Qualifier....

What's A Qualifier?

"Qualifiers and intensifiers are words or phrases that are added to another word to modify its meaning, either by limiting it (He was somewhat busy) or by enhancing it (The dog was very cute). Qualifiers can play an important role in your writing, giving your reader clues about how confident you feel about the information you’re presenting. In fact, “hedging” (as it is sometimes called) is an important feature of academic writing, because academic writers need to clearly indicate whether they think claims are certain, likely, unlikely, or just false. But excessive use of qualifiers can make you sound unsure of your facts; it can also make your writing too informal."

https://writingcenter.unc.edu/tips-and-tools/qualifiers/

See "As Of Today" Sentence Qualifier Used In A (Useless) Tweet:

https://twitter.com/PeterAlexander/status/950509091721502720

Why Is This Tweet Useless? Because No One Was Expecting Oprah Winfrey, "AS OF TODAY" to say one way or the other if she is running for POTUS in 2020.

In fact, if Oprah decides to do so, it would be MONTHS before she would announce --- literally MONTHS and not "AS OF TODAY".

Thus, Oprah has every right to explore her options AS OF TODAY, TOMORROW, NEXT WEEK, NEXT MONTH, FOR MONTHS to make a decision if she would jump in the race to run for President of the United States.

The only thing that should stop the rumor-mill about if she is running or not, is a statement from Oprah herself, as she knows fully well how to speak for Oprah. #FYI

Eric Garners daughter on life support in ICU after suffering heart attack

Source: NY Daily News

The oldest daughter of Eric Garner — who has become an advocate against police brutality since her dad’s death — suffered a heart attack Saturday night and was in critical condition on Christmas Eve, family members told the Daily News.

Erica Garner, whose father died in 2014 when NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo placed him in a chokehold on Staten Island, was on life support in ICU in a Brooklyn hospital, the family said.

The 27-year-old mother of two is unable to breathe on her own, family said. Esaw Snipes-Garner, Erica’s mother, told The News her daughter’s condition was grave but the family hadn’t given up hope. “(She) is still with us. She’s fighting,” the mom said.

Snipes-Garner said her daughter’s cardiac arrest was brought on by an asthma attack Saturday night. Erica, already the mom of an 8-year-old daughter, gave birth to a boy in August, Snipes-Garner said. She named him Eric, after her dad, family said.

Somewhere At The Green Mile - Michael Clarke Duncan & Here On Earth Judy Duncan Are Smiling: Omarosa

Here's the skinny, Omarosa has been yesterday's trash in the African-American community every since in 2012, Michael Clarke Duncan (the nice Actor from many movies including The Green Mile w/ Tom Hanks) died -- and she - claiming to be his "fiancee" left Clarke Duncan to die ALONE after two months of being in the hospital for this Auntie Thomletta gold-digger (short for Uncle Tom) could go on a cruise.

Then she screwed the Duncan family out of ANY of his estate, claiming she was his "fiancee" and had the man sign papers on his DEATH-BED leaving her as the Sole Benefactor of his estate. This is not a joke. All of this happened.

Michael Clarke Duncan's family suspicious of Omarosa From 2012:

"Green Mile actor Michael Clarke Duncan died seven months ago, but as in many celebrity deaths, the battle for his estate rages on. According to TMZ, the family of the imposing actor is eyeing his fiancée, reality TV star Omarosa Manigault, with some suspicion.

Duncan's sister Judy tells TMZ that a lawyer is investigating a change to the actor's will last year that made Manigault the main beneficiary. Judy adds that she believes Duncan made the changes while ill because around that time he had been slurring his words and stumbling.

Moreover, Judy accuses Manigault of fixating on Duncan's money after he was on life support after the heart attack in July 2012 that led to his death in September. And Judy says Manigault sold some of his personal belongings without consulting the family."

https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2013/04/08/michael-clarke-duncans-family-suspicious-of-omarosa/2064169/

And More Is Available Here from 2013:

Michael Duncan Remains In Unmarked Grave As Family Battles Omarosa

"Duncan, who died in September 2012 after cardiac arrest, was laid to rest in a vault at the famed Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles. Even though a bronze plaque has already been paid for, Duncan’s family could not agree on what its inscription should read. TMZ claims that Omarosa told them she wanted Duncan’s name, birth, and death dates placed on the plaque, but his family reportedly did not agree with her wishes and kept her from making any moves.

Sources from Duncan’s camp, though, claim that the opposite is actually true: Omarosa allegedly identified herself as Duncan’s wife on the burial documents and promised to order the inscription but never did.

So now there appears to be a stand-off, and neither side wants to speak to the other about the issue.

The worst thing about the feud is that Duncan’s mother is ill, and at 95, she would like to see her son’s gravesite properly identified.

After Duncan’s death, his family members and Omarosa battled over his assets. The Duncan family members believed that Omarosa persuaded the actor in rewriting his will and leaving all his possessions to her, with Duncan’s sister, Judy, even reportedly hiring an attorney to have Omarosa investigated.

Last April, Judy said that her brother had been ill for quite a while before his death and was not in his right mind. According to Judy, Duncan had been slurring his words and stumbling around for months before he actually suffered a heart attack. Judy claimed that Omarosa was hellbent on securing her brother’s possessions and money even while he was lying in intensive care on life support. Judy also alleged that Omarosa sold many of Duncan’s pricey possessions without his family’s knowledge."

To Put It Mildly, This Trash Is "Gone Girl" To The African-American Community at Large and Trump + Company Throwing Her Out On Her A** Was Just Rewards For What She Put The Duncan Family Through. She can find another "Sunken Place" to go into because we don't want her with us (i.e. African-Americans).

On The Way Out: The Truth About Racism Right Here....

It is a well-known fact, by the time this post is officially on the board, more likely than not, this post will be alerted on and removed - at that point our tenure on this forum will be done (if it's not in the planning as we write this).

However, at least one member asked us why we were leaving. For that member, we hope this post is allowed to stay up - at least for a little while.

1. The Al Franken v.s. John Conyers Saga

It was a crying shame to see individuals who claim they are Democrats attacking with an extreme level of disgust a person they did not know, an Elected Representative for over 53+, the author of the Martin Luther King Holiday Bill, H.R. 676 Medicare for All, a known Leader on Civil Rights, the ONLY candidate the Late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King endorsed and now former Dean of the U.S. Congress, John Conyers.

One would think they knew former Representative Conyers on a personal basis, outside of the mass onslaught of questionable news reports and especially questionable for the accuser who was given a $27,000 severance package. We know the former Representative on a Professional basis and had never seen what was described ever.

Regardless, there were calls for him to resign, leave, go, get out and the like before he or his family could have a real discussion about due process. In fact, these calls begun while at 88-years-old, he was hospitalized for various health reasons.

The pile on around these parts by some posters were quite a thing to see. Some rumored without one bit of facts, the former Representative had dementia, was coming to local meetings in pajamas, did not deserve to be re-elected many times over and so many other things that one would have thought they lived in the 13th Congressional District in Michigan and had intimate knowledge of their rumors.

However, when we asked over and over for proof of their claims, none was EVER submitted. NONE. EVER. However, on this board, there is supposedly a rule that states Democrats are not attacked. This "Rule" is applied haphazardly at best and in the case of John Conyers Saga, was frankly non-existent.

So the question is why? Why was it non-existent? Some could claim it was the alleged harassment rumors. Others, playing on the fence of age discrimination could say the former Representative age or long tenure in the Congress. Or maybe they took a visit to Detroit, did not like it and projected those feelings on the John Conyers saga.

We are going to call it what it is IN OUR HUMBLE OPINION -- Racism.

The same racism that believes African-Americans are supposed to vote for Democrats but never call out Democrats when they believe they are wrong. The same racism that when some were calling for Due Process for John Conyers, others thought that was a joke, but had no problem demanding due process for Al Franken - who happens to be Caucasian.

It's transparent and easy to see from anyone that can understand anything about racial biases -- and yes, they exist right here at Democratic Underground.

Al Franken is now resigning by the end of 2017.

However, it was interesting to see the over 60 threads calling for folks to call Franken's office, email him, email any Democrat who asked for his resignation, threaten to cut off donations to the DNC and Tom Perez, question if DNC Chair Keith Ellison wanted Franken seat (which he is not getting by the way -- at this time without running for Election in 2018 for the seat), calls for Chuck Schumer to resign -- and other "Burn Down The House" type posts .....yet not many (if any) of these same posters joined the calls for Due Process for John Conyers -- or made 1 much less than 60+ threads to say John Conyers should have Due Process.

This was beyond, beyond transparent for us and when WE CALLED IT OUT --- amazingly we had our second post in the last week subject to a jury decision. Almost like Black Women calling out Caucasians on their blatant transparency is not allowed on Democratic Underground.

It appears it is not, as a group of posters (who amazingly have way over 20K+ posts, seem to hang around despite the obvious and engage in jury gang up when their racial biases are challenged) are allowed without question to stay on this forum.

We cannot control this as we don't own the forum or the server it sits upon.

However, on the way out, we will call out exactly what we see. And be sure to tell other African-American Democrats of what we saw are the real underlying tealeaves of SOME posters on this site.

They are -- if you are Black, don't dare call out any racist bias, no matter how obvious on Democratic Underground as SOME White People who claim to be Democrat, cannot deal or take the truth about who they might really be, from behind the safety of a keyboard and computer.

We're done.

Yeah....Still Taking A Break or Leaving...But...THANK YOU SENATOR STABNEOW...

On being constituent and calling for Al Franken to resign! If Former Dean of the U.S. Congress and Representative John Conyers was FORCED to retire, then the same treatment should apply equally to Al Franken. Period!

Also, thank you's are forwarded to Senator Gillibrand (who was first to be consistent), Senator Harris (who quickly followed).

This issue cannot be about RACE
.

If the standard is a standard -- then it should be a standard for ALL - Al Franken, John Conyers (now retired), anyone.

It cannot be about "save" Al Franken but "dump" John Conyers. Unlike Nancy Pelosi position of being all over the darn place -- the many of these Women Senators issued a JOINT statement which was strong and did not leave questions of why now.

Maybe Pelosi can learn a thing or two about consistent leadership from Senator Gillibrand, Senator Harris and Senator Stabneow.
