Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are 'Losers' and 'Suckers'

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that the helicopter couldnt fly and that the Secret Service wouldnt drive him there. Neither claim was true.
Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, Why should I go to that cemetery? Its filled with losers. In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as suckers for getting killed.
Belleau Wood is a consequential battle in American history, and the ground on which it was fought is venerated by the Marine Corps. America and its allies stopped the German advance toward Paris there in the spring of 1918. But Trump, on that same trip, asked aides, Who were the good guys in this war? He also said that he didnt understand why the United States would intervene on the side of the Allies.
Trumps understanding of concepts such as patriotism, service, and sacrifice have interested me since he expressed contempt for the war record of the late Senator John McCain, who spent more than five years as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. Hes not a war hero, Trump said in 2015 while running for the Republican nomination for president. I like people who werent captured.
There was no precedent in American politics for the expression of this sort of contempt, but the performatively patriotic Trump did no damage to his candidacy by attacking McCain in this manner. Nor did he set his campaign back by attacking the parents of Humayun Khan, an Army captain who was killed in Iraq in 2004.
Trump remained fixated on McCain, one of the few prominent Republicans to continue criticizing him after he won the nomination. When McCain died, in August 2018, Trump told his senior staff, according to three sources with direct knowledge of this event, Were not going to support that losers funeral, and he became furious, according to witnesses, when he saw flags lowered to half-staff. What the fuck are we doing that for? Guy was a fucking loser, the president told aides. Trump was not invited to McCains funeral. (These sources, and others quoted in this article, spoke on condition of anonymity. The White House did not return earlier calls for comment, but Alyssa Farah, a White House spokesperson, emailed me this statement shortly after this story was posted: This report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. Hes demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.)

(16,236 posts)this period a real low point in US history/Americana.
....that you cant erase this era.
But you can end it.
The country has the option of categorically ending it with a landslide if it chooses. And not because of party allegiance or political persuasion, but just because the Presidency, if its going to be worth a dime, is too important to be entrusted to a thick as mince chancer you wouldnt trust to tell you the time.
The concerning - and almost unbelievable - bit is that, viewed from afar at least, this election isnt in the bag already.
After all thats gone before its shocking really, the complete debasement of things to reality show levels and worse, and the apparent willingness of so many people to accept it.
How on earth is it possible not to be streets ahead in this ?

(22,850 posts)Because short of something like that emerging, even this is unlikely to move the needle much (a little, yes).
The sad fact is, that 60+ years of non-stop propaganda have brainwashed many voters into the notion that Repugs are the more "patriotic" party by default.
Cheeto knew this full well when he tore into McCain in 2016.

(2,227 posts)Because they (the turd dynasty) can't win fairly, they had to cheat workers, contractors, so he could park his name on buildings, which he rarely owns, yet calls as his. Presto, The Empire of the turd. That FAKE real estate empire is the foundation of everything turd.
They (the entire turd KLAN) have never actually WON anything. HE lost a ton of daddy's money, and could only project the appearance of wealth by having others bankroll him. American money eventually learned he was a loser, so he had to go elsewhere.
It didn't matter that it was to America's most nefarious enemy, where Putin found him to be such a useful idiot. Once Putin became Sugar Daddy to the turd, Sugar Daddy expanded the operation to pull in all the turd's dingleberries, aka the republican party and FOX (Rupert Murdoch). The Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson, Warren Stephens, Geoff Palmer and Steve Wynn were also eager to bankroll anyone in THEIR way to less taxes and "conservative" judicial appointments.
It was a match made in heaven. They already had the "you'll only take my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands" crowd. They were also counting on the evangelical/fundamentalist, and "so-called christian crowd" to succumb to a pretzel logic of being AGAINST all of the teachings of Jesus Christ and FOR the basic foundations of fascism, racism, otherism, and a greed that knew no limits. They needed the preachers, pastors, ministers to preach the gospel of the turd from the pulpit. They were, and still are, somewhat successful. Those few believers in Christ who are finally feeling uncomfortable, are making barely audible grumbling noises. Much too little and much too late. I'll defer to God to sort them out.
When the full truth comes out history will show that the Trump name represents the most EPIC of LOSERS in all of modern history.
And he knows that, which he why he is so desperate to control the narrative.
He only gets away with it due to media complicity, because THEY want a horse race, which causes the public to think the race is close, which allows Putin's electronic hacking, and the suppression of mail in votes, to allow the steal.
Our task is to turn out in such huge numbers that the steal can't happen.
We must turn out, but the democratic party leadership must ensure that if WE get to the polls, in person or by mail, our votes MUST be counted.
They must immediately legislate, nation wide (state by state if necessary), that if a vote is submitted on or before election day it will be postmarked as such, AND WILL BE COUNTED.
And if a vote HAS BEEN SUBMITTED WITHIN THE ALLOWED TIME FRAME, it will be counted, even if it takes weeks to ascertain that final vote.
PUSH has now come to SHOVE. We will do our part, the party apparatus must do theirs.

(30,337 posts)I may not have agreed with McCain's politics, but he served with honor and was tortured for five years while in captivity. Any POW deserves respect and thanks for serving the country. Trump is not even a third of the man that McCain was. He'll always be a POS with zero core values. May he rot in hell when his time finally comes.

YET, ARE ANY OF US SURPRISED??
From Belleau Wood, to John Kelly's fallen son, to calling John McCain a "fucking loser" to shunning war Amputees.
Trump doesn't deserve to be CiC.
By Jan 20th, he'll know why.

(301 posts)As you can see with my DU name, I joined this group when my Marine son was in Iraq. He crossed over from Kuwait into Iraq on the first day of the war and then was deployed again to Ramadi, after he had only been home less than 5 months. He was with the 1st Marine Division out of Camp Pendleton. He came back as a disabled vet, and it took almost 10 years to get his life back on track. I got to learn all about the VA hospitals in the Seattle/Tacoma area and then the Portland/Vancouver area.
I was born at Camp Pendleton. My father was a career Marine. He was a fighter pilot in the South Pacific in WWII. When I was an infant, he moved my mother, older sister and I back to Spokane, WA in case he was killed in the Korean War. Then in 1966, we returned again to Spokane in case he was killed while in Vietnam. My father served because he loved this country. He had a law degree from Gonzaga but gave that lucrative career up to serve. He spent most of his career as an intelligence officer. I was so proud of him and my son, too. I don't know how my mother handled my father being gone so much and in such frightening places. I will never forget when my husband and I went to Camp Pendleton to send our son off to his second deployment. He has the most beautiful blue eyes and as he got on the bus, he turned to me and mouthed, "I love you mom". It brings tears to my eyes even now.
I hope and pray this awful man, who should never have been president, is removed from office. What a nightmare we are in.

(19,373 posts)You know what? It doesn't surprise me in the least. Donald Trump has never shown a decent human emotion. The only human emotions he knows are greed, jealously, lust and anger. Why can't some people see him for what he truly is? He's less than human. Even wild animals show more compassion for each other than Donald Trump does for other humans.
I'm at the point where I just shake my head and mutter incomprehensibly.

And they bled. They aren't losers.
