My 84 year old mother has been a long time Fox News fanatic

Today I drop by for a visit and she has MSNBC on. Miracles never cease.

If there's any scenario where you value property over lives

you're the problem, not people taking basic necessities during a natural disaster.

Just because the Right is going after Disney doesn't mean the Left should be kneejerk defenders

Disney is objectively an awful company with a lot of bad policies.

A few facts about Kyiv

it sits on high bluffs above the river Dnipr. Any attack would be uphill

it has the deepest subway system of any major city in the world. The tunnels near the city center are 150-300 feet deep. The defenders can use them as living quarters, shelter and to move from one fighting position to another. Russian artillery can't touch them down there. OTOH it also may tempt Putin to use WMD's to dig them out.

Biden taps former New Orleans mayor Landrieu to spearhead infrastructure

President Biden is tapping former New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu to coordinate the implementation of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, the White House announced Sunday.

“In this role, Landrieu will oversee the most significant and comprehensive investments in American infrastructure in generations — work that independent experts verify will create millions of high-paying, union jobs while boosting our economic competitiveness in the world, strengthening our supply chains, and acting against inflation for the long term,” the White House said in a news release.

In Sunday’s announcement, the White House touted Landrieu’s work shepherding New Orleans through its recovery following Hurricane Katrina. Landrieu, a Democrat, served as mayor of New Orleans from 2010 to 2018. He later chaired the U.S. Conference of Mayors, a bipartisan coalition of mayors across the country.

My 82 y/o double vaxxed mother is reluctant to take the third shot

She cited the 16-2 vote against by the FDA advisory panel. This is what inconsistent messaging gets you. I know it doesn't make sense but I wasn't going to argue with her. She was moderna vaxxed so it's not an issue yet. My dad is all for the third shot. If and when it's approved maybe he can convince her.

The white ethnic group (and their poc allies) as a bloc vote

I think we are seeing that in the past few elections and I don't think it's going to change. It's going to be very hard to pry them away from the GOP grasp. The Republicans will learn to field candidates with Trump's agenda without his offputting baggage. Even as whites become the minority, they will still be the largest single ethnic group, and they are likely to ally with minorities who don't think fhemselves as poc, e.g., Asians and some Hispanics.

Apropos of maybe nothing, my college student niece is in a sorority at a large southern school. Looking at some group pictures, I notices several Black members. Progress, right? Well, maybe not. On further inquiry, these young women were African exchange students, no doubt from the political and social elite of their own countries. Maybe it really is all about class.
