Under my scenario it could possibly be triggered by a fascist Rethug administration trying to nationalise a set of christofascist/white nationalist laws, backed up via a cray cray RW SCOTUS, and then attempting to force, via real or implied state (as in the state, the US government) violence and/or other very coercive methods, to bring all the Blue states to heel. After several years of that, I could see real succession movements emanating from places like the West coast, and the Northeast Blue states.
