Steve Schmidt, Former McCain Adviser: A Lot Of Republicans 'Wish Ted Cruz Would Go Back To Canada'

Steve Schmidt, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), took a hit at Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) Thursday night for causing "distractions" in the fight over Obamacare.

“A lot of Republicans I think tonight look at Ted Cruz and wish Ted Cruz would go back to Canada,” Schmidt said during an appearance on MSNBC's “Last Word.”

Cruz was born while his parents were living in Canada. His father was not an American citizen at the time, but his mother was born in the United States, according to the Atlantic Wire. (Cruz's father is now an American citizen.)

For once, I agree with a lot of Republicans.

Pa. residents living above mine fire free to stay

Source: AP

The few remaining residents of a Pennsylvania coal town that was largely razed in the 1980s because of an underground mine fire that still burns today have gotten their wish - to be left alone, free to live out their lives there.

A lengthy battle over eminent domain culminated this week when eight residents of Centralia settled their lawsuit against state officials who had been trying to evict them from their condemned homes. The settlement, notice of which was filed in U.S. District Court, allows the residents to stay for as long as they live. It also includes a cash payout of $349,500.

"Everybody got what we wanted, and everybody's happy now," resident Tom Hynoski, 52, said Thursday.

The mine fire was ignited in 1962 and eventually spread to the vast network of mines beneath homes and businesses, threatening residents with poisonous gases and dangerous sinkholes. By the end of the 1980s, more than 1,000 people had moved and 500 structures had been demolished under a $42 million federal relocation program.

But some holdouts refused to go, even after their houses were seized in the early 1990s. They said the fire posed little danger to their part of town, accused government officials and mining companies of a plot to grab the rights to billions of dollars' worth of anthracite coal, and vowed to stay put.

If not Hillary, Who?

Look, I'm new here, so please excuse my boldness, but Secretary Clinton is the only choice for '16. Hey, I love Joe Biden: He's the most underrated and underappreciated member of the Administration. He would have forced Harry Reid to punt any "gentleman's agreement" on the filibuster, and his "Counterintelligence backed by Special Ops rather than Boots on the Ground" approach to foreign policy is spot-on. But he'll be 73 on Election Day. Hillary will be 69, and we all know that women live longer than men. Clinton II will be a kick-ass/take names/no prisoners president and we all know that.

O'Malley and Cuomo can wait their turns with Warren. Hillary Rodham Clinton for President!

Democrat showing solid lead in Virginia governor's race: poll

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Democrat Terry McAuliffe's lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the widely watched Virginia governor's race may be helping lower-level Democratic candidates in a state hard hit by the recent government shutdown, a poll showed on Wednesday.

A Roanoke College poll showed businessman and former Democratic National Committee Chairman McAuliffe with a 15-point lead over state Attorney General Cuccinelli, though that margin was far stronger than in two other polls.

"This election is shaping up to be a referendum on Cuccinelli," said Harry Wilson, director of the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research at Roanoke College.

Cuccinelli, a Tea Party favorite and strong abortion opponent, was hurt by this month's federal government shutdown and now has a 52 percent unfavorable rating among likely voters, compared with McAuliffe's 33 percent unfavorability, the poll found.

Fed maintains strong stimulus as U.S. growth stumbles

Source: Reuters

By Pedro da Costa and Alister Bull

WASHINGTON | Wed Oct 30, 2013 8:37pm EDT

(Reuters) - The Federal Reserve extended its support for a soft U.S. economy on Wednesday, sounding a bit less optimistic about growth as it announced plans to keep buying $85 billion in bonds per month.

In announcing the decision, the Fed nodded to weaker economic signals that have been due in part to a fiscal fight in Washington that shuttered much of the government for 16 days earlier this month.

The central bank noted that the recovery in the housing market had lost some steam and suggested some frustration at how slowly the labor market was healing.

My 101st Post

The reason I have achieved this in a relatively-short period is the I'm unemployed, having recently been let go from the job I had for decades. I find DU a comfortable place to spend time, and hope you're as comfortable with me as I am with you.

Now get off my lawn, you dang kids! (Cough)
