Right to Life sues to block Michigan abortion rights law

LANSING, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Thousands of people attended a "March for Life" event Wednesday at the Michigan Capitol lawn in Lansing.

"Today's date has special significance," said Genevieve Marnon, who serves as the legislative director for the Right to Life of Michigan. "It's the one-year anniversary of the passage of the dreadful Proposal 3, which enshrined a right to abortion in the Michigan Constitution."

The group marched to the Michigan Supreme Court building in light of a new federal lawsuit filed Wednesday against Proposal 3, which placed the right to abortion care into the Michigan constitution.

"The claim that's being made in this lawsuit is that Proposition Three violates federal constitutional protections. Protection for free exercise of religion for medical professionals, for example," Marnon said.

After it was clear that Ohio had rejected right-wing Christian fascism and voted to enshrine the right to abortion in its state constitution, President Joe Biden released a statement, and it was “All we do is win, biyatches.” Or more properly:

"Tonight, Americans once again voted to protect their fundamental freedoms – and democracy won. In Ohio, voters protected access to reproductive health in their state constitution. Ohioans and voters across the country rejected attempts by MAGA Republican elected officials to impose extreme abortion bans that put the health and lives of women in jeopardy, force women to travel hundreds of miles for care, and threaten to criminalize doctors and nurses for providing the health care that their patients need and that they are trained to provide. This extreme and dangerous agenda is out-of-step with the vast majority of Americans. My Administration will continue to protect access to reproductive health care and call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law once and for all."

Democracy won. He echoed that on Twitter: “Across the country tonight, democracy won and MAGA lost. Voters vote. Polls don't. Now let's go win next year.”

To be clear: There was no result last night that was bad for Democrats. Most were good. Some were incredibly good. (Democrats flipped a Trump +35 district in the New Jersey Assembly!)

"Trump's strong general election polling is a mirage"

"Former President Donald Trump’s general election polling strength is a mirage, and Republicans will be making a grave mistake if they fall for the illusion and nominate him for 2024.

"The New York Times/Siena College poll between Trump and President Joe Biden is making waves, as it shows Trump leading in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Biden is unpopular, people think the country is on the wrong track, and a majority rate the current economic conditions as “poor.” None of this is a surprise.

"But to assume that this proves there are no electability concerns for Trump is a mistake. These polls are essentially just a reflection of Biden’s disapproval rating (59%) and unfavorability rating (57%). Biden is the focus because he is the president. The people currently being polled are expressing their dissatisfaction with Biden, not that they actually want Trump back.

We know this because Trump still polls very poorly individually as well. His unfavorability rating (56%) is nearly identical to Biden’s. Among undecided and persuadable voters, 46% think Trump winning would be bad for the country, while just 20% think it would be good. A majority, 54%, say that Trump has committed serious federal crimes. Just as Biden is polling below a “generic Republican,” Trump is polling below a “generic Democrat.”

For some reason, strange or not, I am reminded of those expressed sentiments, by all the columnists who have been saying

"I have the utmost respect for President Joe Biden, but he should withdraw from the 2024 election..."

(worst of all from GQP 'Never-Trumpers' who seem to have forgotten that they are 'Never-Trumpers'....

So why aren't these SAME MOTHERFUCKERS now saying that DONALD TRUMP SHOULD WITHDRAW from the 2024 presidential election, because he is a THREAT to the very foundations of our nation, and a goddamned NAZI WANNABE??

AFTER ALL, only ONE of these candidates is facing 91 felony indictments...

ONLY ONE of these candidates has voiced his intention of "weaponizing" the IRS and the FBI against his political enemies, if he is elected....

And ONLY ONE of these candidates is planning to invoke the Insurrection Act upon his first day in office, to "weaponize" our military against those who protest--- a right which is protected by the United States Constitution---

(oh wait, I forgot-- Donald Trump wants to CANCEL that Constitution... but instead of highlighting THAT intention of the fascist challenger, they dwell on President 'Fighting Joe' Biden's "alleged" shortcomings ???)


All those who have said that members of the so-called "liberal mainstream media" are Co-Conspirators with the Republicans who care about nothing but political power and MONEY are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

Oh, about the OP subject line... well, I don't have many black friends, because I have practically NO friends, many of them already died... but I never had to utter such a line, because I had no racist sentiments to defend...

Thanks to the efforts of my mother, the first church I ever attended was an African-American A.M.E. church in the mid-1960s,
because the mother of my white family wanted her children to be exposed to AAs whom she thought to be 'devout',
in contrast to those who were rioting on the news broadcasts at that time...

She might have been confused in her motivations for this, but I have been forever grateful.

We were the only white family attending that church, and the people there showed us more ardent love for being there, BY FAR, than I ever experienced in any other church....


I still remember one Sunday in particular, where all the black congregants were crying, and so was my mother--- and recall no such instance before or after that.... I must have been five or six years old at the time, and didn't understand it, and wasn't told what it meant then (since I was too young to be told)... but it left an impression that I still recall, many decades later...

In latter years, upon recollection, I am totally convinced that this was the first Sunday after Martin Luther King had been assassinated...

I REALLY HATE

that I "went postal" over the united Democratic House vote to kick McCarthy off the speaker's office, 2 nights ago....


I had forgotten a lot of McCarthy's sins, and I missed the Sunday morning CBS interview....

I just didn't like the "optics" of House Democrats voting for the Gaetz motion--- and that was my only problem with it


But as 'Boston Bean' suggested--- 'Democrats didn't vote with Gaetz--- Gaetz voted with Democrats!'

And thanks to all the rest of you who reminded me of how bad McCarthy had been...
I had forgotten much of it...


Upon further consideration, I deleted my OP....
I did have a lot to drink that night also, what can I say...

I'm just "some guy" on the internet,
but I was also impressed by the united Democratic resolve...

Anti-Abortion Lawyer Wants Names of People Who Donated to 9 Texas Abortion Funds

A Texas lawyer is trying to get the names of donors to nine abortion funds in the state, as well as information on every abortion the funds may have assisted with since September 2021, when the state’s bounty-hunter law took effect. He’s seeking the identities of thousands of people in Texas and across the country in a move that advocates say could threaten the operations of the non-profit groups, which are already struggling to raise enough money.

The effort isn’t likely to be successful because the First Amendment protects people’s right to associate, but the lawyer doesn’t need a judge to agree with him in order to cause harm for abortion seekers. Just the act of requesting the information could be enough to scare people out of donating to abortion funds, said Farah Diaz-Tello, senior counsel and legal director for If/When/How, an advocacy organization that helps abortion seekers with legal questions and runs a defense fund for criminal abortion cases.

Jezebel contacted Mitchell for comment about the requests to abortion funds, and he declined to speak on the record. The plaintiff abortion funds said in a press release that “Mitchell and his clients are abusing the discovery process…to subject thousands of people to mass surveillance and harassment.”

Diaz-Tello said that, overall, conservatives like Mitchell are engaging in a “campaign of terror” to manipulate laws against abortion seekers and their loved ones. Of the Mitchell-backed lawsuit where a man is suing his ex’s friends, she said that “it’s essentially abusing the legal system” to scare people out of helping each other: “This is sort of saying that if you do that, if you privately support your friend in a way that is so natural to any of us, that we’re going to expose you, your name is going to be out there, we’re going to come to your place of work and serve you with papers.” It’s threatening to put people through the “humiliating hallmarks of being dragged into the legal system,” to say nothing of the time, stress, and cost of being involved in a court case.

This lawyer must know that he has close to zero chance of obtaining such lists--- he is doing this hoping for publicity, only to intimidate potential donors and women who find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy, or who desperately need an abortion for health reasons...


We need to find a way to strike back at these people! Maybe I will create a list of my own--- including any of their publicly available contact information... This guy is a lawyer... I presume he has an office with a street address...

All these rightwingers are attacking the rights of women, LGT and others, and feel that they can do this without much risk.
That should change!

(I am not advocating violence against these people--- but I absolutely will advocate the exposure of more information about them...
in this instance, no MORE personal details than this lawyer is seeking to obtain....)
