Sanders' independent status could pose issue in NH primary

by KATHLEEN RONAYNE, Associated Press

CONCORD, N.H. — From his run for mayor of Burlington to numerous campaigns for Congress, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has for more than three decades eschewed traditional party labels in his pursuit of political office, winning election after election as an independent.

As he seeks the presidency as a Democrat, that unwillingness to be pigeonholed could be a liability in New Hampshire. To get on the ballot in the first-in-the-nation primary state, candidates must fill out paperwork that requires them to identify as a registered member of a political party.

"I don't know if it will be a problem," New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner said when asked whether Sanders' independent status could keep him off the ballot.

New Hampshire officials won't take up a case against Sanders without a complaint, Gardner said. A formal challenge to Sanders' eligibility would likely make its way to the state's Ballot Law Commission, the arbiter of such questions. Former Republican U.S. Rep. Charlie Bass raised the issue of Sanders' eligibility in a recent Washington Post opinion piece.

"In short, Sanders is not a Democrat, has not been elected as a Democrat, has never served as a Democrat and cannot plausibly claim, at least in New Hampshire, to be a Democrat," Bass wrote.

In Phoenix Speech, Donald Trump Won’t Back Down On Immigration Comments

Oh please, oh please could it be Trump vs. a sane rational Democrat?

by Emily Greenhouse, Bloomberg Politics

On the eve of a Phoenix rally that he predicts will draw 5,000 people to hear him speak about illegal immigration, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Bloomberg's "With All Due Respect" that he has no intention of backing off the stands that have drawn him rebukes from some top-ranking political figures. "We have to stop illegal immigration," the billionaire businessman told interviewer Mark Halperin on Friday. "The country is being decimated by it.

Speaking about the wave of criticism he has received this week, he did not back down. “All I can do is talk the truth,” Trump said. He declined to say that he has made any mistakes, or that anything had hurt his feelings. “No,” Trump said, “because I’m a big boy.”

*BOG GROUP* President Obama keeps marching!

President Obama is expanding on the recent Supreme Court ruling upheld in Fair Housing Act that discrimination does not have to be based just on intent to discriminate. HUD will now seriously consider defacto systemic outcomes in neighborhoods that result in discrimination, even if "accidental"!

Communities will have to implement corrective actions or face Federal funding cuts!

Outcomes! This is how we really fight - and measure - the last vestiges of discrimination in America.

The Obama administration on Wednesday will announce new rules requiring cities to look for racial bias in housing practices in order to promote racially integrated neighborhoods, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The rules would further the work of the landmark 1968 Fair Housing Act, which made it illegal to refuse to sell or rent a home to a person based on race, religion, gender or national origin.

The Post said cities and towns now would be required to look for patterns of racial bias in local housing, report the results every three to five years and set goals on how to reduce segregation in housing.

The newspaper said the rules, sought by civil rights organizations, will show when communities flout housing law and will allow HUD to withhold federal funding in flagrant cases.

In June the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that supported the Fair Housing Act by saying discrimination in housing cases cannot be limited to questions of intent.

*HILLARY GROUP* Here's the one number that proves Bernie Sanders isn't a threat to Hillary Clinton

Some more calm reassurance for our Hillary Group.

But one question in a new CNN poll out Wednesday takes the air out of Sanders' surge, and shows why his momentum likely won't translate to electoral success.

According to CNN, only 2% of Democratic voters think Sanders has the best chance of winning the general election. That number has proven to be a red flag for any candidate.

Studies have long shown that most voters desire to cast their vote for a winning candidate, and they'll often vote for their second choice if they perceive the candidate to have a better chance of winning. As University of Maryland professor Eric Pacuit points out, many voters in 2000 who supported Green Party candidate Ralph Nader ended up voting for Democratic nominee Al Gore.

There are a couple of reasons for this. According to Duke researchers Daniel Kselman and Emerson Noiu, some voters cast their votes strategically, as some Nader supporters did for Gore. Other simply desire to jump on the bandwagon of the winning team.

Voting behavior aside, Sanders's recent gains in New Hampshire shouldn't be projected elsewhere.

*HILLARY GROUP* In House, liberals side with Clinton over Sanders

The corporate media headlines scream one thing, reality is quite another!

The Hillary group keeping it real!

Dozens of House liberals have endorsed Hillary Clinton's White House bid even as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is gaining steam.

Sanders, a liberal icon, has emerged as a surprisingly strong candidate since launching his campaign two months ago, raising $15 million and making huge gains on Clinton recently among Democratic voters in Iowa, which will host the country's first presidential caucus.

Yet at least 26 Democrats representing the 69-member Congressional Progressive Caucus –– a bastion of liberal thinking that Sanders helped to launch –– have already endorsed Clinton, according to a tally being kept by The Hill.

The list includes liberal stalwarts like Reps. Rosa DeLaura (D-Conn.) and Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) –– both forceful voices in the recent trade debate that Clinton was reluctant to enter –– and Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), three vociferous critics of an Iraq War that Clinton, as a New York senator, supported.

But no members of Congress have officially endorsed the Vermont senator.
