Chick-fil-A UPDATE: backtracks, won't pledge to end donations to anti-LGBT charities

From Pink News: https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/11/19/chick-fil-a-backtracks-anti-lgbt-donations/

The chicken chain, which has a long history of donations to lobbying groups that oppose LGBT+ rights, signalled on Monday that it would end donations to charities that discriminate against LGBT+ people, after a sustained international boycott.

However, after a backlash from anti-LGBT conservatives and Republicans, the company appears to have quietly backtracked.

In a statement to Vice, Chick-fil-A President and COO Tim Tassopoulos refused to confirm the company would not donate to groups that oppose LGBT+ rights. He said: “No organisation will be excluded from future consideration–faith-based or non-faith-based.”

A statement on the Chick-fil-A Foundation website said it was “happy and proud” of its 2018 donations, which include Christian organisations that discriminate against LGBT+ people.

Well, that didn't last long.

Simple Homemade Chili Hot Oil Recipe

This simple recipe is for a condiment you frequently see on the table at Chinese restaurants. It is dead easy, and makes a delicious flavoured oil for all sorts of uses. We fancy ours up rather a lot with a bunch of different spices, but of course you can make plain hot oil with just the mashed-up pepper pods. If you want it hotter, leave the seeds in!

As far as I'm concerned, the sesame seeds are non-negotiable, but you can easily make this your own by adding or removing spices. Ours bears a passing resemblance to the flavour profile of Chinese 5-spice powder, and those ground-up Szechuan peppercorns add a really nice floral note.

Also: I wanted to say thanks again for everyone who watches, likes, and shares our videos! We just passed 1500 subscribers on YouTube, and we feel like we've managed to introduce a few people to some fun new recipes. Thanks!!

How far is too far for Don Cherry?

Full article here: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/article-how-far-is-too-far-for-don-cherry/

On Saturday night, as part of his annual Remembrance Day tribute to Canada’s veterans on Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry ranted angrily that, in Mississauga, where he lives, and downtown Toronto “nobody wears the poppy.” Jabbing his index finger repeatedly toward the camera, he said: “You people love – they come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys pay for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

In his statement posted on Sunday to the Twitter account of Sportsnet PR, Yabsley seemed as stunned as Capt. Renault: “Don’s discriminatory comments are offensive and they do not represent our values and what we stand for as a network. We have spoken with Don about the severity of this issue and we sincerely apologize for these divisive remarks.”

Cherry’s apologies have been rare and usually made only under extreme pressure – sometimes of the legal variety. On the opening night of the 2011-12 season, Cherry laced into three former NHL enforcers, calling them “pukes” and “hypocrites,” for suggesting the league’s fighting culture – of which Cherry is the greatest cheerleader – had caused the substance-abuse problems of fellow tough guys. It took more than a week, and the threat of a lawsuit from the three former players, before Cherry apologized.

On Sunday night, almost 24 hours after his “you people” comments, nobody had yet heard from Cherry. But his sidekick, Ron MacLean, who had sat in silence during Cherry’s rant and then concluded the segment with an oddly robotic thumbs-up, offered an earnest apology that included references to Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

Opening the broadcast of Rogers Hometown Hockey, of which he is the host, MacLean told viewers that Cherry’s remarks “were hurtful, discriminatory [and] flat-out wrong.”

“We know diversity is the strength of the country. We see it in the travels with our show, and with Hockey Night in Canada. So – I owe you an apology, too,” he said. “I sat there, did not catch it, did not respond. Kathryn Teneese of Ktunaxa First Nation once said, in any wrongdoing, the real key is recognition and acknowledgment. I wanted to let you know that first – and then you work on the relationship, so that it isn’t divisive, so that something can be a unifying event. Idle No More was a great lesson to all of us. Last night was a really great lesson to Don and me. We were wrong, and I sincerely apologize, and I wanted to thank you for calling me and Don on that last night.”

Don has such a history of saying shitty things, they didn't even have to reference his "commie pinko" rant about Toronto cyclists when he was stumping for Rob Ford. Further proof that cancel culture just isn't a thing for well-known media personalities. They get to just keep coming back and coming back.

Don, your 15 minutes were up years ago.

Vegan Apple Carrot Oat Breakfast Mini Muffins Recipe

Okay, that's a lot of words to describe something pretty simple. This is an easy and delicious breakfast muffin that is dense with nutrients and extremely delicious. It is also vegan, and we didn't even add any sugar to ours, because the apple we used was so sweet, as well as the apple cider.

These muffins aren't like the big poofy muffins with muffin-tops you typically find, but they do get some nice loft from the baking soda and baking powder, and they are quite dense, and will sustain you through the morning. You can make them a little bigger, but you may want to cook them a little longer. You can, of course, change a number of things in this recipe. Replace carrots with zucchini, replace apple with pear, change the spice mix, change the raisins for cranberries or dried cherries, this is a very versatile recipe. Just remember not to over-mix, and once it's mixed, don't let it sit around before baking!

Homemade Applesauce Recipe

Pretty short and sweet one this week! It's apple season, so we've got some great fresh apples going on here in Ontario! This week is this simple and delicious homemade applesauce, and next week will be some tasty breakfast muffins!

These apples were perfect and ripe, very sweet, and so didn't need any added sugar. If you're using a much more tart apple like a Granny Smith, you may wish to add some sugar. Also, we doubled down on the apple flavour by using apple cider for the liquid, but you can also use apple juice or water for the liquid to get the cooking started. Spices, bourbon, etc... are all optional of course, but we think they all a very pleasant accent to the sauce. Texture, as well, is personal choice. Ours is still slightly chunky because we like a bit of texture in there, but you can also burr mix this, or even pop it in a blender for a much smoother sauce. Just take your cinnamon stick out, first!

Warren vs. Private Equity firms

If laypeople understood what private-equity owned firms do, this would make them want to vote for Warren even more.

The PE industry isn't inherently bad — it finances some small businesses that can't get capital elsewhere — but in the US, due to lax laws, most PE firms now make money by buying healthy companies, shifting their own debt into them, plundering their assets and firing the workers.

A good case is Toys R Us.

Many people assume Toys R Us went bust because they were unprofitable. But that's not true — they were actually turning a profit. They went bust because a PE firm bought them, then forced Toys R Us itself to pay the debt the PE firm ran up buying them.

The intent of PE is to be a mutually beneficial relationship: the PE firm cuts waste at the firm they buy and increases their profit, to the benefit of both.

But nowadays in practice, it's usually a hostile takeover that strips companies and kills jobs to enrich the PE execs.

So what are Elizabeth Warren's proposals?

-Hold PE firms responsible for a portion of debt from a leveraged buyout.
-Require worker salaries and pensions be settled first in the event of a PE-held company's bankruptcy.
-Require workers get a vote on public boards of directors.

The Economist is right: those proposals *would* shrink the PE industry — because the kind of hostile takeovers that are now the bulk of PE revenue would be unprofitable or illegal.

PE firms could still exist, but they'd have to act in the interest of the companies they buy.

I don't see any problem with that.

Some European countries already restrict PE firms this way and it hasn't killed capitalism. It's actually made capitalism work better, because profitable companies don't get randomly chewed up and shit out by a small group of rich people.

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

A simple and delicious recipe for this time of year! If you've got some green tomatoes on the vine that won't ripen before the frost comes, then now's the time to do something! This is a very basic recipe (with a couple of fun dipping sauces at the end), but you can obviously spice this up however you'd like. Dust them with a little cajun seasoning when they come out of the oil, or dust the tomatoes with a bit of cumin or curry powder before you bread them!

Andrew Scheer frantically asks for do-over after accidentally voting for Trudeau

Just a little levity to celebrate.

https://www.thebeaverton.com/2019/10/andrew-scheer-frantically-asks-for-do-over-after-accidentally-voting-for-trudeau/

Insiders suggest that Scheer’s moment of panic ensued immediately after dropping his voting slip into the box at the Mâmawêyatitân Centre polling location for Regina- Qu’Appelle. Witnesses close to the leader stated that Scheer’s face paled and flop sweat immediately poured down his back as the realization of what he had just done settled in. Though he initially tried to pretend like nothing had happened, the fear that the press could catch wind of the blunder was apparently too much for Scheer to handle. Reports that security personnel were required to intervene in order to pry Scheer’s fingers out of the narrow cardboard slit into which the vote was cast are still unconfirmed.

“I just….. I’ve just been thinking about Trudeau so much lately. Like, EVERY DAY. And I guess he was on my mind when I was filling out my vote and….. I just….. I just….” the leader stammered as tears welled up in the corners of his eyes. “It’s not fair!”

“Ok, just give me five minutes with the voting box. I totally know which one is mine ‘cause I drew little devil horns on the names of all the other candidates before I filled it out,” Scheer requested, having regained his composure. “I can just scoop it out and totally pretend this never happened. No fuss, no muss.”

After being forcibly ejected from the polling centre for causing a scene, Scheer immediately initiated a conference call with Justin Trudeau telling him that it would be so funny if he would vote for the Conservatives “as a total goof.”

Homemade breakfast sausage recipe!

This one requires a little bit of specialized equipment! We're using the meat grinder attachment on our KitchenAid for this, but there are other meat grinding options, of course. The trick here is to keep everything as cold as possible! You may wish to keep both the bowl you're taking the chunks from and the bowl that the ground sausage is ending up in ice baths to make sure everything stays at a good low temperature. If things get too warm, you end up with fat rendering out, and it won't emulsify properly for the final sausage.

We did this into saran wrap to make patties, but of course if you have the necessary equipment, you can extrude this filling into casings for individual sausage links. The flavour profile we used is very much a breakfast sausage (though a bit too garlicky for my personal taste), but you can personalize this however you like!
