So is Donelly an improvement over Lugar or status quo?

Based on what little I know, It's a wash. He's about the same as Lugar, but he slightly strengthens the Democratic caucus and we averted a disaster with Mourdoch.

Ballots still being counted in Miami-Dade

With the presidential race settled but Florida still too close to call, Miami-Dade was still waiting Wednesday afternoon for final results.

On Wednesday afternoon, elections workers continued feeding thousands of pages of ballots into scanning machines — and they were not expected to finish until the evening, leaving a much-mocked blank spot on the long decided electoral map.

Earlier in the day, the county said 20,000 absentee ballots still needed to be counted. The office of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez issued a news release insisting that the “unprecedented length of the ballot” represents “over 100,000 pages that need to be reviewed and verified, one by one.”

“This in no way is representative of any issues or delays, but a matter of unprecedented volume,” the release said, noting that the county’s canvassing board is continuing to examine suspect absentee ballots.

Democrats flip 7 legislative chambers from red to blue.

WASHINGTON— With polls now closed across the United States and votes being tabulated, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced that Democrats have made important and historic gains in statehouses across the country.

“From Maine to Oregon, Democratic candidates and volunteers spent countless hours talking to their neighbors about their ideas to improve their communities, attract quality jobs, fund education, and build vital infrastructure,” said Michael Sargeant, executive director of the DLCC. “And their hard work paid off as Democrats made significant gains across the country and will take the majority in several legislative chambers.”

Democrats gained majorities in the Colorado House, Maine House and Senate, Minnesota House and Senate, New York Senate, and Oregon House. Democrats made historic gains in the Pennsylvania Senate, New Hampshire Senate, and New Hampshire House.

Despite significant spending to defeat them, Democrats held majorities in the Iowa Senate, Kentucky House, Nevada Senate, New Mexico House and Senate, Oregon Senate, Colorado Senate, and the Washington House and Senate.

“The voters have spoken, and they wants their elected leaders to focus less on ideology and more on providing practical solutions to improving their communities. Over the upcoming weeks and months the real work of governing begins, and these Democratic members of state legislatures will wake up every day committed to fighting for working families, advancing equal rights for all citizens, and making sure all taxpayers are treated fairly,” Sargeant concluded.

NH House flips back into Democratic control

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Two years ago, Republicans swept Democrats into a small minority in New Hampshire’s state Senate and House, but the results of Tuesday’s election have flipped that around.

House Democratic Leader Terie Norelli said Wednesday preliminary counts show Democrats won 217 House seats to 177 by Republicans with six races still to be decided. She said even if Republicans win all six, Democrats will be in the majority again. That is at least a 115-seat gain since Democrats only control 102 seats now out of 400.

Norelli, of Portsmouth, faces a challenge for speaker from Nashua Democrat David Campbell.

The Secretary of State’s office is working on a final tally.

Minnesota Legislature: Democrats regain control

Democrats regained control of the Minnesota Legislature Tuesday, Nov. 6, putting them in charge of both chambers and the governor's office for the first time in 22 years.

A blue wave swept Republicans out of control of the House and Senate after just one, tumultuous two-year term.

The GOP made history in 2010, when they took control of both houses of the Legislature for the first time since 1972.

But they couldn't hold on against a tide buoyed by a large Democratic voter turnout that carried the state for President Obama and gave U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar a landslide victory.

House Republican Speaker Kurt Zellers called House DFL Minority Leader Paul Thissen to concede the loss of the chamber around 1 a.m.

Bilbray loses. Recount likely.

It looks like Scott Peters beat Brian Bilbray by almost 700 votes. A recount is surely pending but, damn, California was deep blue last night.
