By Liberal Librarian
So, Senator Elizabeth Warren and presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders have been on the warpath over the Trans-Pacific Partnership and its attendant fast track trade authority. In doing so, they have engendered much support among the usualand some not-so-usualsectors. Namely, the people who always thought Barack Obama was a sell-out to corporate special interests, evidenced by him not frog-marching Jamie Dimon and other banksters to stand for federal indictments over the 2008 meltdown.
snip
Its the idea that Pres. Obama would cavalierly undo one of his signature achievementssetting up rules so that 2008 didnt happen again, rules which he plucked an obscure academic named Elizabeth Warren to help implementto coddle the same Wall Street is ludicrous on its face.
Of course, its not ludicrous if one thinks that Obama was always going to betray us. The sense of perpetual disappointmentboth on the Left and the Rightdrives much of the countrys political culture. This is due, in large part, because of the apparent lack of legitimacy of many government institutions, stoked by a right-wing drive to paint all government as useless, and a concomitant view on the left that the government is a subsidiary of corporate America.
But people who should know better are now feeding the fires of disillusion.
Sen. Warrens main gripe is that the public isnt seeing the bill. Oddly, as this interview with Greg Sargent illustrates, she keeps moving the goal posts. She, of course, can see the negotiating text in full. It then becomes: Fast track wont allow Congress to make changes to the deal. The problem is that fast track can be revoked if the deal doesnt meet its stated aims in Congress opinion. Then she goes through some more of Pres. Obamas hypotheticalsall hypotheticals that require GOP control of the White House and Congress after 2016. Which would be a good reason to focus energy on winning 2016, rather than shivving the partys sitting President in the back.

I guess that is why there is so much push-back, white America is dying. It will end by 2042, or so I have read from the census bureau. This white woman is so happy to hear that we will become the United States of all races.

(53,661 posts)Obama did it through time travel and a wormhole. And get this:
He was sent by the CIA and DARPA as a teenager! See, CIA! CIA! CIA!
Obama should have gone back and eliminated all evil from before his birth in the Kenyan province of Hawaii.
But they do have a point about PBO and the alphabet agencies. Here's the proof. He's been one of them for many years...
Forget Kenya. Never mind the secret madrassas. The sinister, shocking truth about Barack Obamas past lies not in east Africa, but in outer space. As a young man in the early 1980s, Obama was part of a secret CIA project to explore Mars. The future president teleported there, along with the future head of Darpa...
Obama wasnt the only one making the otherworldly voyage. As Barry Soetero, the 19-year-old Obama was one of 10 youths selected to secretly teleport to and from Mars, forming a band of interplanetary Teen Titans. Regina Dugan, the director of Darpa, was another member. Between 1981 and 1983, Obama is supposed to have visited Mars twice, by way of a teleportation chamber called a jump room. Basiago, a fellow chrononaut, told the website Exopolitics that he saw Obama walk back to the jump room from across the Martian terrain. To acknowledge his comrade, Obama is said to have told Basiago, 'Were here' - apparently, with some sense of fatalism.
It is not known what exactly Obama did on Mars. (Socializing Martian health care, perhaps? Building a birth-certificate printing press?) His mission was a perilous one, according to Basiago and Stillings. The CIA wished to establish a defense regime protecting the Earth from threats from space as well as a legal claim to territorial sovereignty, making Obama something of a Martian conquistador. Presumably, Obamas CIA handlers needed him to acclimate Martian humanoids and animals to their presence in order to secure the U.S.-Martian alliance. (Well bet you werent even aware of Martian animals.)
Simply put, your task is to be seen and not eaten, an elder chrononaut, retired Army Maj. Ed Dames, is alleged to have told a young Obama...

Personally, I think Danger Room is onto something with this story. It all makes perfect sense. And I appreciate Obama having our back against any extra-terrestrial menace. And I'm glad he didn't get eaten.
Unfortunately, the White House has denied this trip. But I don't believe them on this one. No, I believe this. Just because I just want to, and it fits in with my view of the cosmos.
No one can ever make me believe differently. So take that... Uh, anyone.

Senators Warren and Sanders should have learned from watching Pres. Obama rhetorically slice away at the GOP: If youre going to come with foolishness, expect to be treated as such."

I've seen one or two use the line "if you automatically dismiss something Republicans are for, you're just having a knee-jerk reaction". Reply: "oh yeah? We have a historical case study to base our opposition to the TPP on. Its called NAFTA. So regardless of what Obama or Warren state, we shouldnt trust free trade agreements, no matter what. A democrat sold us out last time, and a democrat will sell us out this time. It's sad that party/Obama loyalty blinds people to what has happened historically.

PLUM LINE: But dont you get 60 days to review it after the deal is finalized, with the authority to revoke fast track?
WARREN: The president has committed only to letting the public see this deal after Congress votes to authorize fast track.
She completely ignores Sargents point, that she can see the complete text. She has been abysmal on this."

(5,275 posts)I've seen enough of the TPP to know it's not good. It would be good if I were a huge international corporation. Anyway, if it's so good for us, why not show us so we can dance in the streets? Fast Track and secrecy seems to be a hard thing to defend so I commend the Bots for trying.
There just seems to be a certain segment that will defend Obama no matter what.
Again I was all in as he ran, he sounded like Senator Warren Then he got in and right away did a 180 on his financial team - the same Reaganites that had blown up the economy. Not a good start, Then no Wall Street Execs see the inside of a jail cell? Of course not, he fights against homeowner relief as he hands billions to the people who brought up to the brink of disaster. You can't make this stuff up but apparently some can somehow defend it.
All this seems to go right over the head of the loyalists, or they rationalize it.

(3,864 posts)Has any liberation movement been more slandered than Kenya's Land and Freedom Army, usually referred to as the Mau Mau? This term is still used by racists as a club to attack Black people.
Right-wing columnist Ann Coulter, outraged that Halle Berry won an Oscar in 2002, complained that this Black artist had "successfully mau-maued her way to a Best Actress Award."
Former Vice President Daniel Quayle's chief of staff, William Kristol, said Carol Mosely Braun "mau-maued" the U.S. Senate when, as the only African Amer ican woman member in the Senate's history, she stopped a charter renewal for the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Thousands of Mau Mau guerrillas wrote a heroic chapter in the book of liberation with their blood. As with the French in Algeria, it was the armed struggle in Kenya that compelled the British imperialists to grant independence to their African colonies.

(86,005 posts)...anyone can count the votes which will have republicans overwhelming supporting TPP and a sufficient number of Democrats in support of the trade pact to ensure any opposition won't reach the 60 vote threshold negotiated in the TPA deal to revoke fast track. It's a cynical and insincere clause which is designed to make it appear there's a way to back out of fast track. The WH (and Sen. Hatch, who came up with this phony clause) knows well the votes aren't there to make that clause realistic.
PLUM LINE: Doesnt the current framework allow for the revocation of fast track authority?
WARREN: The whole point about fast track is to grease the skids so that 51 votes will get it through it takes a majority to get rid of fast track.
