6. Hamas thought it could be the spark, and it was to a degree, but not as far or way it hoped.

Iran knows if the US and Israel, with tacit approval of Saudis, Egyptians and others, gets in a full on shooting war with them, Iran will be back in the dark ages with its ports, power plants and a lot of other key infrastructure shattered. And they have no substantive resources to rebuild, they can barely maintain and run what they have. They do seem to still be able to get their proxies to snipe at US forces and bases in Iraq and Syria. I suppose oil flow is a concern but can't help thinking that regime change in Iran is getting to be an ever increasing temptation to some despite short term pain. Sad to say, but I bet if Biden dropped the hammer on Iran and said "enough!", his re-election might be assured. I know he is a cooler head and not that kind of politician. Suspect if the same opportunity had presented itself with Trump in same situation, he would go for it.

Interesting. Maybe Iran is not willing to gamble their leadership's lives on such a declaration. OAITW r.2.0 Nov 2023 #2
So far most aren't. Perhaps Hamas made a significant blunder with their October 7 attack? JohnSJ Nov 2023 #3
