Iran tells Hamas it will not enter the war with Israel

Source: Yahoo (The Telegraph)

Iran’s supreme leader told the head of Hamas in a face-to-face meeting in Tehran that his country would not enter the war with Israel and accused the terror group of not giving any prior warning of the Oct 7 attacks.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Ismail Haniyeh that Iran – a longtime backer of Hamas – would continue to lend the group its political and moral support, but would not intervene directly, according to three Iranian and Hamas officials with knowledge of the discussions who asked to remain anonymous. The supreme leader pressed Haniyeh to silence those voices in the Palestinian group publicly calling for Iran and its powerful Lebanese ally Hezbollah to join the battle against Israel in full force, a Hamas official told Reuters.

The conflict is also testing the limits of the regional coalition whose members – which include the Syrian government, Hezbollah, Hamas and other militant groups from Iraq to Yemen – have differing priorities and domestic challenges.. On Oct 7, Mohammed Deif, Hamas’s military commander, called on its axis allies to join the struggle. “Our brothers in the Islamic resistance in Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, Iraq and Syria, this is the day when your resistance unites with your people in Palestine,” he said in an audio message.

Hints of frustration surfaced in subsequent public statements by Hamas leaders including Khaled Meshaal, who in an Oct 16 TV interview thanked Hezbollah for its actions thus far but said “the battle requires more” . Nonetheless, alliance leader Iran will not directly intervene in the conflict unless it is itself attacked by Israel or the US, according to six officials with direct knowledge of Tehran’s thinking who declined to be named due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

Iran knows if the US and Israel, with tacit approval of Saudis, Egyptians and others, gets in a full on shooting war with them, Iran will be back in the dark ages with its ports, power plants and a lot of other key infrastructure shattered. And they have no substantive resources to rebuild, they can barely maintain and run what they have. They do seem to still be able to get their proxies to snipe at US forces and bases in Iraq and Syria. I suppose oil flow is a concern but can't help thinking that regime change in Iran is getting to be an ever increasing temptation to some despite short term pain. Sad to say, but I bet if Biden dropped the hammer on Iran and said "enough!", his re-election might be assured. I know he is a cooler head and not that kind of politician. Suspect if the same opportunity had presented itself with Trump in same situation, he would go for it.

...on the hearts and minds. That is a bent we don't all fully grasp but I think it is why we, a Saudi led coalition or anyone else has not attempted something substantive.

98% of Iran’s oil exports flow through the one port of Karg Island.
Iran’s other oil ports lack even 10% of Karg Island’s capacity.
Two American cruise missile submarines, carrying 154 non-nuclear Tomahawk cruise missiles each, could completely knock out Karg Island for months, and its production could not be significantly restored in a year. I.e., Iran’s oil income would pretty much cease

they are present in Iraq and Lebanon and sell weapons to Russia and the Houthis in Yemen. Their support to Hamas and Hezbollah seems purely to spite Israel. As if they have nothing better to do. Ironically, the Shah had friendly relations with Israel and US during his reign.
