Once Trump can appoint new Supreme Court justices, watch for these beginnings to grow into wholesale reversals of crucial advances made over the past 50 years. With the right in charge of all three branches of government, there's little that has been done that they can't undo.

This was the threat of the 2016 election. Sadly, we missed our chance by not winning enough states for the Democratic nominee. We're going to have our work cut out for us if we hope to prevent regression.

Are we up to the job? After 2016, I wonder, really, whether we are or not or whether factionalization will further splinter our unity.

If you're not sad and alarmed about these prospects, you aren't paying attention. The signs were there before November. There was plenty of warning, too.
