My husband plays and he takes issue with those guitar lists as well. Sometimes I point them out to him just to get him going. It's enjoyable for him for his own reasons and I like listening to him travel back in time and across genres to explain why so-and-so is great, truly great, and who he thinks is underrated or overrated.
He has a completely different way of looking at it than I do.
He gets excited, plays songs or clips of songs and says, "There! There! Hear that change? Right there! Right there! Brilliant! Simply brilliant!" (then plays it again to make sure I hear it). Or pulls his own instrument out to show me the difference.
He talks about something people are currently excited about that was done - and done better - by so-and so back in 1972/1958/1936, scoffing at "so-called experts" claiming how the sound is original or fresh.
