20. Remembering, we had a lot of Mormons in our California

Oct 2019

neighorhood, and their kids who grew up with ours were promised they'd see Jesus's return within their lifetimes. Their church was established to prepare the planet for the Second Coming and was finishing up the job.

Small piece of the "epidemic," but the Republican nominee in 2012 was one of theirs. That's a big part of why I felt sure Romney believed, by the time he became the nominee, that God had chosen him to preside over Armageddon from the WH/Pentagon and over the establishment of his Kingdom at the site Mormons purchased for it near Independence, MO. He held the Cold War belief that Satan's armies were massing in Russia and Iran and promised to ask for an extra $2B for the military that they hadn't requested. Some people around him didn't talk about any of that specifically but said that (strikingly!) even his top people weren't sure what his agenda was (he spouted different ones to different audiences) and that he was peculiarly confident he'd win and then absolutely stunned when he didn't.

Worth remembering with him hanging around in the wings waiting for God to call again. Also that many Americans had no problem with him serving god before the people and constitution, while the press acted as if it was against both their journalistic principles and good manners to discuss religious goals.
