43. My grandfather served in the Iraqi Levies

Part of the Assyrian platoon. In fact, the Levies were predominantly Assyrian, something that would later be used against them as "proof" that the Christian Assyrians would always side with their religious brethern over their neighbors. My maternal side is from Habbaniya, Iraq, where most Assyrians lived at the time, near the RAF base. The allies promised us a safe haven in our indigenous land in exchange for our services, but of course, they never did follow through on that. Shocking, I know.
