Largest Oklahoma school districts opt out of using PragerU garbage in their classrooms

https://www.koco.com/article/oklahoma-school-districts-opt-out-lesson-plans-prageru/45027081

A day after the state Department of Education announced a partnership with a conservative advocacy group, Oklahoma's largest school districts said they're opting out of optional lesson plans.

On Tuesday, state Superintendent Ryan Walters argued videos and materials from PragerU Kids offer educators more options. No one wanted to go on camera, but KOCO 5 got several statements.

So far, several of the metro's largest districts are telling KOCO 5 they will not be opting into the offerings from PragerU Kids. PragerU claimed to offer free alternatives to "dominant left-wing ideology in culture, media and education."

Grim Reality in Maui: Hundreds Still on Missing List a Month After Inferno

Grim Reality in Maui: Hundreds Still on Missing List a Month After Inferno
The F.B.I. says more than 380 people remain unaccounted for. Many residents have begun to accept that their loved ones will not be coming back, and survivors wonder what comes next.

It has been one month since a wind-whipped wildfire engulfed the historic Hawaiian town of Lahaina, and the authorities are still trying to determine exactly how many people died in the nation’s deadliest conflagration in more than a century.

Nearly all of Lahaina has now been searched by teams of rescuers, cadaver dogs and anthropologists trained to detect fragments of human remains, yet the official death toll has stood at 115 people for more than two weeks.

That has meant an agonizing wait for the families of more than 380 people whose names populate a list that the F.B.I. says it is still trying to reconcile, even as many loved ones have begun to accept the grim reality of loss.

Kimberly Buen said that only in the last week did she lose hope that her missing father could have survived the fire, after an F.B.I. agent visited her home in Southern California to take a DNA sample.

Women win of primaries mean Mexico's next President will likely be a woman

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/women-win-mexican-primaries-one-is-likely-to-be-18352668.php

MEXICO CITY - Half of Mexico's Congress is female. The cabinet is gender-balanced. And now, women have won the primaries of the two leading political blocs - making it likely that this traditionally macho nation will elect its first female president, ahead of the United States.

Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, who until recently served as Mexico City's mayor, defeated five men to secure the nomination of the governing party, MORENA, its officials announced Wednesday. If the leftist candidate triumphs in the election next June, she also will set another precedent, as Mexico's first Jewish head of state.

Her victory came days after an opposition coalition, the Broad Front for Mexico, nominated Xóchitl Gálvez, 60, a business executive and senator of Indigenous origin.

"This is a feminist's dream," said Maricruz Ocampo, a women's rights activist in the central city of Querétaro. The 2024 race, she said, "is going to signify a turn in the way that we see women in politics."

New Jersey business owner used drone to drop dye into nearby pools: Police

ABSECON, New Jersey (WPVI) -- A business owner from Absecon, New Jersey is facing criminal mischief charges after allegedly using a drone to drop green dye into neighborhood pools.

It was late June when the general manager of the Quality Inn in Galloway Township noticed their outdoor pool had suddenly turned neon green - and she knew it wasn't algae.

"I saw it totally green and I was like, 'Oh wow what is going on?' So we saw a dye pack in the bottom of the pool and we didn't know what it was," said Sandra Woolstion, operator and general manager.

They had the pool drained and cleaned, but she said it continued to happen about a dozen times over the course of the summer.

Meanwhile, in Absecon, police got a similar call from a homeowner in August.

"We had a resident who was enjoying time in his pool and saw a drone over top and the drone actually dropped something in his pool and it turned green immediately," said Absecon Police Chief James Laughlin.

On Friday police say the drone was spotted over the Quality Inn again, and this time with help from the FAA the drone was tracked back to this business across the White Horse Pike.

2 Los Angeles sheriff deputies plead guilty to fabricating gun/drug charges against a skateboarder

2 Los Angeles sheriff deputies plead guilty to fabricating gun/drug charges against a skateboarder

Sheriffs are waiting sentencing
Victim got $450k settlement

.

According to the April indictment, the man identified as J.A. was in an enclosed skate park at Wilson Park in Compton on April 13, 2020, when the deputies arrived and contacted two young Black males outside the park.

---------

After J.A. yelled at the deputies to stop bothering the youths, Vega allegedly got into an argument with him and challenged J.A. to a fight, prosecutors said. Vega then pulled J.A. through an opening in the park fence and placed him in the back of the deputies' patrol SUV, according to prosecutors.

The skateboarder was not handcuffed, was not told he was under arrest and was not restrained by a seat belt in the back seat of the SUV, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Vega and Hernandez both "taunted" the man, suggesting they were going to set him up by dropping him off in gang territory, prosecutors said.

Vega also allegedly made comments saying the deputies were going to "fabricate and falsely allege that (J.A.) exhibited symptoms of being under the influence of a stimulant as a pretext to justify their false imprisonment" of him, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

As Vega was driving the SUV with J.A. still in the back seat, he began pursuing a group of young males on bicycles, prosecutors said. Hernandez jumped out of the SUV to pursue one suspect on foot, while Vega drove into an alley, where he crashed into a wall and another vehicle, causing J.A. to hit his face and head and sustain a cut over his right eye, according to prosecutors.

After the crash, Vega allegedly took J.A. out of the patrol SUV and told him to leave, then reported over the sheriff's radio that a suspect with a gun had run through an alley, and he described the suspect as wearing clothing similar to those worn by J.A.

Former LASD deputy to plead guilty to conspiring to violate falsely imprisoned skateboarder’s civil rights

“While J.A. was at a hospital later in the day to receive treatment for the injuries he sustained from the collision, Hernandez spoke with another deputy who had escorted J.A. to the hospital,” the Justice Department said. “Consistent with the plan suggested and articulated by Vega earlier in the day, Hernandez directed the deputy at the hospital to issue J.A. a citation for being under the influence of methamphetamine, even though Hernandez knew this to be false.” The deputy followed Hernandez’s direction and issued the citation.

The former deputies authored two incident reports which intentionally included false, misleading and ambiguous information in the reports to justify, legitimize and ultimately cover up their unlawful conduct, Hernandez admitted in the plea agreement.

“The first report falsely stated that J.A. appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant; that J.A. had threatened to harm people in the skatepark, as well as Vega and Hernandez; that a crowd of people were moving toward the LASD patrol vehicle as the defendants drove away after unlawfully detaining J.A.; and that, following the crash in the alley, Vega checked J.A. for injuries and J.A. was placed in another patrol vehicle of an assisting LASD unit until paramedics arrived,” the DOJ said. “The second report likewise falsely stated that Vega transferred J.A. to another patrol vehicle after the collision, which both Hernandez and Vega knew to be false.”

Billionaire after billionaire turns away from Desantis because he is too hard right for the gen elec

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/09/06/desantis-donors-florida-election-00114080

I think he’s done a terrific job as governor of Florida, and I’ve been, as I think you know, a big supporter of him in that role,” Rauner said of DeSantis. But, he added, “I think Nikki Haley probably has the best chance to win the general election ... I think everyone is trying to sort things out. We gotta win, we gotta win the general.”

------

And in recent weeks, some of DeSantis’ biggest past donors have come out publicly to say they are holding back on writing checks to the super PAC. That includes hotel and aerospace executive Robert Bigelow, by far the biggest individual contributor to Never Back Down and to DeSantis’ reelection campaign. Last month, Bigelow told Reuters that he would not give further donations to the super PAC unless DeSantis adopted more moderate policies and “until I see that he’s able to generate more [contributions] on his own.”

----
(abortion)
“If it becomes apparent that Ron has boxed himself into a corner … in Florida, and is not going to win because of the consequences, I may not support him. It’s that simple,” Buckley said. “That at this point is really my consternation because I like DeSantis. I think he’s talented, hardworking as hell and smart. But I cannot understand why he took such a hard position in Florida. I think it’s a mistake.”
