President Donald Trump has made disparaging remarks about Oakland many times, and he did it again in the Tuesday night debate with former Vice President Joe Biden.
Fox News' Chris Wallace, who moderated the debate, asked the president about his frequent assertion that cities with Democratic leadership are more violent than Republican-run ones. When Wallace said Republican-controlled cities show similar trends of violent crime, Trump launched into a stream-of-consciousness response that, at one point, included an assertion that Oakland was "more violent" under President Barack Obama and asked where law and order was under the Obama-Biden watch.
"Look at Oakland, look what happened in Baltimore, look what happened, frankly it was more violent than what I am even seeing now," the president said.
"Oh, my god," Biden said.
"The reason is the Democrats in the cities," Trump went on.
The Twitterverse was quick to respond to Trump's stab at Oakland and many defended the East Bay city. Here's a selection of some tweets, including one from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

The police officer who fatally shot Breonna Taylor is crowdfunding money to retire
The Louisville police officer who fatally shot Breonna Taylor is currently raising money to fund his retirement.
Detective Myles Cosgrove was one of three Louisville officers who fired shots into Taylor's apartment last March after breaking in to serve a search warrant related to Taylor's ex-boyfriend.
Taylor, an emergency room technician, died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the botched raid.
Now, Cosgrove is seeking funds on the "Christian crowdfunding site" GiveSendGo so he can "purchase the remainder of his service time" and retire, according to the fundraiser's description. He wants to focus on his family's safety, which, per the description, has been threatened since protests erupted after Taylor's killing.
"Myles' reputation has been completely dismantled and the psychological trauma is something that he will have to cope with for the rest of his life," the fundraiser description reads.

Democratic voters who have requested mail ballots - and returned them - greatly outnumber Republicans so far in key battleground states, causing alarm among GOP party leaders and strategists that President Donald Trump's attacks on mail voting could be hurting the party's prospects to retain the White House and the Senate this year.
Of the more than 9 million voters who requested mail ballots through Monday in Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maine and Iowa, the five battleground states where such data is publicly available, 52% were Democrats. Twenty-eight percent were Republicans and 20% were unaffiliated.

Even more alarming to some Republicans, Democrats are also returning their ballots at higher rates than GOP voters in two of those states where that information is available: Florida and North Carolina.
The wide Democratic lead in mail voting so far has been the subject of urgent discussions among top GOP officials, according to people familiar with the conversations.
The margins are "stunning" - and bad news for Republicans up and down the ballot, said longtime GOP pollster Whit Ayers. Proud boys respond to Trump "Standing down and standing by sir,"
On the Proud Boys’ account on the social media app Telegram, the group appeared to take the statement as marching orders.
“Standing down and standing by sir,” the account wrote. The account then posted two videos of the answer, including one with the caption “God. Family. Brotherhood,” in which a man howled at the TV in response to Trump’s response.
Megan Squire, a computer science professor at Elon University who tracks online extremism, said that Trump giving the Proud Boys orders was their long-sought “fantasy."

So where did President Donald Trump's now-famous $750 tax payment go?
And using those figures to make estimates, the biggest chunk of Trump's $750 was about $181.87 that went to pay for the Defense Department, of which the president is a vocal supporter. That was only enough to pay for about a single day's worth of salary for an Army sergeant with about 10 years of seniority.
An additional $72.44 went to pay veterans benefits and military pensions.
After the military and veterans, the next biggest recipient of his income tax dollars was Medicaid, which received $115.60 from Trump. Medicaid provides health care to the poor and helps cover the cost of nursing home care for the nation's elderly who can't afford the care themselves.
Various other programs to help the poor come next, with $111.28 of Trump's money. That includes programs such as SNAP -- also known as food stamps -- which received $21.58, and the earned income tax credit and other tax credits to help the working poor, which received $25.59. Federal unemployment benefits got $9.56 of Trump's money.
Interest on the national debt comes next, getting $81.07 of Trump's taxes. Then the payments get fairly modest: $31.13 that went to pension benefits for federal civilian employees, $28.36 that went to education and $18.50 that went to health care other than Medicare and Medicaid.
Spending on law enforcement, including the Justice Department, captured only $16.95 of Trump's $750, while international affairs, including US embassies around the world and foreign aid, got $15.72
The rest of the money spent by the federal government -- national parks, NASA, the EPA and innumerable other federal agencies and programs -- altogether totals only $77.07 of the $750 in income taxes he reportedly paid.
