hiker rescued after location determined from this photo by satellite imagery hobbiest

https://www.sfgate.com/california-parks/article/missing-waterman-hiker-satellite-images-found-16100690.php

A mystery photo and a geography enthusiast helped locate a missing California hiker who is now safely back home.

Rene Compean of Palmdale was on a hike Monday near Mount Waterman, a popular ski destination in the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California. While the 45-year-old was on his outdoor adventure, he snapped a picture. It showed him from the knees down, dangling his bare legs from a precipice with a canyon below and slopes in the distance. Compean texted the shot to a friend. And then, he went off the map.

He was reported missing at 6 p.m. by a friend, who received one last text from Compean saying he was worried he was lost and his cell phone battery was running low. The photo was turned over to investigators at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who posted it to social media, asking if anyone recognized the spot in the photograph.

Benjamin Kuo saw the message and thought he might be able to help. As a satellite image aficionado, he was already familiar with tracking California wildfires in remote areas.

"I've got a very weird hobby, which is I love taking a look at photos and figuring out where they're taken," Kuo told NBC Los Angeles.

Using satellite images, maps and the scenery below Compean's feet in the photo, Kuo was able to estimate the coordinates of where he believed the man had gone missing. Kuo sent his tip to the sheriff's office, and a helicopter was sent to survey the area Tuesday. There, as if by magic, was Compean.

'We are extremely sorry': Dine and dashers apologize, repay SF Korean barbecue restaurant

It’s been a roller coaster ride for one Korean barbecue restaurant in the Richmond District that had back-to-back dine and dash incidents last weekend.

Alfred Lee, co-owner K-Elements BBQ in the Richmond District, told KPIX that on Saturday a party of three women dined at his restaurant and left without paying their $100 tab. Surveillance cameras caught the women swiftly turn the corner and make a run for it with smiles on their face.

But just days after the incident, the purported dine and dashers have made amends by paying in full and leaving an apology note inside K-Element BBQ’s mailbox, according to the restaurant owners. K-Elements BBQ shared the letter on Instagram, which was signed by “The 3 girls.”

“We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused,” the note read. “We had full intentions of paying and once we had already eaten, we soon realised [sic] that it was 29.99 per person and not per table. At the time we didn’t have anywhere near enough money and could not afford what we had eaten and came to an irresponsible and irrational decision. ... Our act was not malicious or ill-intended towards your business, it was a mistake and a lack of judgment which we all deeply regret,” the note continued.

'It was completely unnecessary;' De Soto chief reacts to video showing officers beating, kicking man in groin at police station
12/16/2020

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Two officers are accused of assaulting a man brought in for booking at a Jefferson County police station and a third officer is accused of deleting photos showing the assault. Video of the alleged beating was obtained only by News 4.

Former De Soto police officers James Daly and Bethany Zarcone were charged in connection with an assault on a man being booking at the Jefferson County police station.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, officers James Daly, 55, and Bethany Zarcone were on-duty on September 30 when they assaulted a man brought in for booking at the De Soto Police Station. Charging documents say Daly grabbed the man by the hair and throat, pushed him onto a bench and held him down by the neck for a "period of time." Zarcone is accused of hitting the handcuffed man in his groin with her knees.

"It was almost disbelief. There are times when police officers have to use physical force while doing their jobs but in this case, this was a picture," said De Soto Police Chief Jeff McCreary. "It was completely unnecessary. Our procedure is, if someone is being uncooperative during booking, you take the items from them that are necessary to get them in a cell in a safe manner, and then you come back to them later".

---------------------

Daly reportedly put a mock graveyard on his lawn as a Halloween decoration last year. Images of it began circulating on social media showing several crosses with names on them that are used as grave markers. The wording on one of the crosses says, "Here lies Michael Brown, a fat ghetto clown."

man Attacked Asian Woman, Believing She Was White, In Retaliation For Rise In Hate Crimes

https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2021/04/12/police-michael-rhee-lake-forest-attacked-asian-woman-believing-she-was-white-retaliation-rise-hate-crimes/

A Lake Forest man faces a hate crime charge after allegedly kidnapping an Asian woman, believing she was white, with the intent to sexually assault her.

Michael Sangbong Rhee, 37, was arrested Thursday night at his home in Lake Forest. Irvine police say Rhee may have attacked a woman, believing she was white, in retaliation for the rise in hate crimes against Asian people.

Irvine police say an Asian woman was sitting in the driver’s seat of her car near her apartment Thursday afternoon when she looked up to see Rhee standing at the door, holding a handgun. She told police she did not recognize Rhee, who ordered her to get into the back of her car if she wanted to live.

---------------

Detectives believe Rhee — who is Korean — targeted the woman because he thought she was white, based on his own statements, and that the assault was in retaliation for hate crimes that have skyrocketed against Asian people.

Photos: Oakland driver goes over 100 mph in Maserati, collides with freeway underside, CHP says

The California Highway Patrol's Oakland office shared images Monday showing the aftermath of a brief vehicle pursuit after a speeding driver in a Maserati refused to stop for an officer attempting to pull him over, the CHP said.

The 32-year-old male driver on 580 westbound accelerated to over 100 mph and a pursuit ensued, according to CHP.

-----------------

"It was a short-lived pursuit," Officer David Arias, a spokesperson for Oakland CHP, further explained. "He didn't make it far before he exited and as soon as he exited, instead of going straight, he veered left, went off the ramp and then went up the embankment and collided with the underside of the freeway."

The images show a car wedged under the freeway in a place you'd never think would be accessible to a vehicle.

-----------------------

The driver was taken to a local hospital due to a complaint of pain and will be facing charges for reckless evading, CHP said. An investigation is underway.

"It's unbelievable that he didn't die," Arias said. "It's crazy that he lived."
