Ring camera catches cat jumping fence and escaping coyote... Seattle

It’s common these days to see viral videos of people pilfering packages from porches, but an Amazon Ring camera captured a more unusual scene in our side yard in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood this week: our neighbor’s cat leaping for his life, literally, with an urban coyote hot on his tail.

Apart from the drama of the escape, the video quality is quite good. The Ring’s infrared camera captured the scene in black-and-white in the dark, providing a clear and chilling glimpse of the coyote sniffing the ground and assessing the situation after the cat’s narrow escape. Looking at the video, we were surprised — and the cat was fortunate — that the coyote didn’t leap the fence.

---------------------------

For those concerned about the cat, our neighbors report that he was spooked by the close encounter but otherwise alright.

A new recruitment tool for employers -- paying workers every day, moments after shift ends

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/paid-daily-wages-taco-bell-worker-shortage/

Struggling to attract workers as the coronavirus pandemic drags on, major companies are dangling an uncommon benefit to lure job candidates: a chance to get paid every day.

Dozens of employers — including fast-food chains Arby's, Wendy's, Jimmy John's and Taco Bell as well as retailers Big Lots, Dollar Tree and Kroger— are now giving employees the option to withdraw money from their paychecks moments after finishing their shift by using smartphone apps like Branch or DailyPay.

"Usually people aren't taking out $100 to go to the bar at night," DailyPay Chief Marketing Officer Jeanniey Walden told CBS MoneyWatch. "They're taking out, for example, $37.10 because they have a light bill that they forgot to pay."

Such apps are essentially software add-ons to existing payroll systems like ADP. Employees can download the app on their iPhone or Android device and log in using a company-provided email or phone number. The app shows workers by the hour how much cash they're earning as their shift progresses throughout the work day and allows them to transfer their wages to a connected bank account with the touch of a button.

Cats can mentally map your location by ear

A new study out of Japan found that a stationary cat can track its owner's location using audio cues -- specifically, the owner's voice.

Saho Takagi, first author of the study and a doctoral student at Kyoto University, said she has always been interested in cats' hearing abilities. She's a cat person all around, but said her favorite part is their ears. Cats have sensitive ears that can move in different directions.

"I saw a cat with only one of its ears tilted back, listening to the sound behind it, and felt that cats must be thinking about many things from the sound," Takagi said in an email to CNN. "This time, I investigated whether they map their owner's position spatially from sounds."

The study, which took place in a home setting and at a cat café, observed how cats would react to their owners' voices without visual cues by using speakers that played a recording of owners saying their cats' names. The researchers placed the speakers apart from each other, out of the cats' sight, to see how the cats would respond to the sounds, especially if the owner's voice appeared to teleport from one location to another. Another group of people, who were not animal behavior experts, rated the cats' level of surprise from a scale of 0 to 4, based on behaviors like ear and head movements.

Cats in the study were surprised when their owners appeared to "transport" from one location to another, the study concluded. Results from this study demonstrate evidence of socio-spatial cognition in cats, meaning they can mentally picture where others are through cues like sound.

sign maker asked to make sign: 'Welcome unvacinated and unafraid' but like pretty ya know??

The owner of a personalized sign business went viral for shutting down a woman asking her to make an anti-vaccination sign.

"Can u make a custom sign?? I want one with a certain saying but can't find it. I can do local pick up," the initial message from Samantha reads.

A second message states what kind of sign the customer is looking for: "I want a round door sign that says 'Welcome unvacinated and unafraid' but like pretty ya know?? Its for my front door and i need it by thanksgiving. How much $$??."

"Samantha, assuming you are referring to the COVID vaccine, I cannot in good conscience make a sign promoting anti-vaccination," @thesleepyowlhome wrote back. "COVID vaccines have been thoroughly tested and proven effective and are entirely safe so there's nothing to even be afraid of. Thanks!"

"Um i didn't ask for your opinion i just want you to do your job like im paying you for. or you just cant do customs like you said and are just lieing to our customers or what?? Seriously I just want the sign and im the one paying you and im a lion not a sheep!!" Samantha said.

At the end of the video, @thesleepyowlhome drew up the requested sign, but facetiously points out the spelling and grammatical mistakes. She also adds an extra line so it reads: "Welcome we are unvaccinated and unafraid * and uneducated."

DC Solar ponzi scam may be largest in history of the US, Jeffrey Carpoff sentenced to 30 years

Prosecutors say the scam may be the largest in the history of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento, one that bilked investors out of nearly $1 billion and generated a lavish lifestyle for its perpetrators that included more than 150 exotic sports cars and antique vehicles, vacation villas from Lake Tahoe to the Caribbean and even ownership of a minor league baseball team.

On Tuesday in federal court in Sacramento, Jeffrey Carpoff, the man behind the massive fraud, learned the penalty for his crimes: a 30-year prison sentence and an order to pay more than $790 million in restitution. “You were selling air,” U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez told Carpoff before sentencing him to the maximum allowed. “There was nothing there. You knew that. “You can blame the lawyers and the accountants all you want. But you’re the heart of this.”

Carpoff and his wife, Paulette, pleaded guilty in January 2020 to taking part in the Ponzi scheme involving their Benicia-based DC Solar Solutions company, plea deals that came after months of negotiations.

----------

“I can’t apologize enough,” Carpoff, 50, said. “I can’t apologize to the investors, to the government. “I can’t apologize to my family It really got out of hand, and it’s horrible.”

Feds: Billion-Dollar Bay Area Ponzi Scheme Funded Jet-Setting Lifestyle, Ownership Of Minor League Baseball Team

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) — Jeff Carpoff, owner of Benicia-based DC Solar, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison Tuesday in a billion-dollar Ponzi scheme that he used to finance luxury homes and automobiles, the purchase of a minor league baseball team and a sponsorship of a NASCAR team.

Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert called the case one of the biggest criminal fraud schemes in San Francisco Bay Area history

-------

According to court documents, between 2011 and 2018, DC Solar manufactured mobile solar generator units, which were solar generators that were mounted on trailers and were promoted as able to provide emergency power to cellphone towers and lighting at sporting events.

A significant incentive for investors were generous federal tax credits due to the solar nature of the project.

But investigators said Carpoff and his fellow conspirators sold solar generators that did not exist to the investors, making it appear that they existed in locations that they did not, creating false financial statements and obtaining false lease contracts. In reality, at least half of the approximately 17,000 solar generators claimed to have been manufactured by DC Solar did not exist.

“Jeff Carpoff orchestrated the largest criminal fraud scheme in the history of the Eastern District of California,” Talbert added. “He claimed to be an innovator in alternative energy, but he was really just stealing money from investors and costing the American taxpayer hundreds of millions in tax credits.”
