A CNY man was wanted for shoplifting hygiene products. A stranger got him out of trouble

Oneida, N.Y. — When college student Darien Fox woke up Wednesday morning he saw a social media post on his phone about a man wanted for stealing hygiene products.

Police were asking for help identifying the man who stole a razor, a toothbrush, body wash, an energy drink and a Hostess Hoho from the Byrne Dairy on Lenox Avenue in Oneida on Monday evening.

Several people, including Fox, commented on the post that they would like to pay for the items the man had stolen, police said. Fox, who said he did not know the man, also sent a private message to the Oneida police Facebook account.

“I just said I would pay for it,” Fox, a 22-year-old Oneida resident, told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. “Just tell me a time and place. There’s no need to put this man in jail or fine him for something that everyone needs. You could tell he was struggling.”

Fox’s offer to pay for the items was accepted by the manager of the store and Oneida police dropped the case against the man who was not identified.

SF police sargeant arrested... demanded painkillers at Rite Aid

https://www.ktvu.com/news/sfpd-sergeant-charged-with-robbery-of-san-mateo-ride-aid

A source tells KTVU's Henry Lee that Cole allegedly demanded painkillers from the pharmacy. Police would not say what was or was not taken or if anyone was hurt. Cole was off-duty at the time of the robbery and allegedly resisted by trying to run away.

The sergeant is a graduate of the Commission POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) supervisory leadership program.

Part of his work involved getting substance-addicted people into drug treatment and housing.

San Mateo police say their investigation is ongoing and would not disclose if Cole was armed during the robbery. Cole, who was booked at the San Mateo County Jail, is out on bail.

L.A. sheriff's deputies use minor stops to search bicyclists, with Latinos hit hardest

Thousands of times a year, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies pull over bicyclists for minor violations such as riding on the sidewalk or not using lights at night — infractions that can be handled with a warning or a ticket.

But deputies routinely escalate the stops into more intrusive encounters and disproportionately pull over Latino riders.

A Los Angeles Times investigation found deputies search 85% of bike riders they stop even though they often have no reason to suspect they’ll find something illegal. Most bicyclists were held in the backseat of patrol cars while deputies rummaged through their belongings or checked for arrest warrants.

The Times' analysis of more than 44,000 bike stops logged by the Sheriff’s Department since 2017 found that 7 of every 10 stops involve Latino cyclists, and bike riders in poorer communities with large nonwhite populations are stopped and searched far more often than those in more affluent, whiter parts of the county.

For all the stops and searches, deputies rarely catch criminals. During searches, they find illegal items just 8% of the time, The Times’ analysis shows. Weapons were seized just 164 times — less than half a percent of all searches.

Texas homeowner fatally shoots man with medical condition who wandered onto porch in middle of night

Texas homeowner fatally shoots man with medical condition who wandered onto porch in middle of night

A Texas homeowner shot and killed a 21-year-old man Monday during an early morning encounter on his front porch.

The shooting occurred in the Fort Worth suburb of Saginaw around 4 a.m. in the 600 block of Babbling Brook Drive, the Saginaw Police Department said. Officers were called to the scene after reports of gunshots.

When they arrived, they found a man deceased lying face down on the porch from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. His mother identified him to Fox affiliate KDFW-TV as Andrew Russell.

The homeowner told police he was awakened minutes earlier by someone banging on his front door. The person was asked to leave, which he began to do, police said.

The person who was shot walked away but turned around and "rushed the resident," police said. The homeowner fired multiple shots as he retreated into the home, police said. No charges have been filed.

Russell's mother, Cynthia Williams, told the news outlet her son suffered from epilepsy and frequent seizures for years and likely wandered out of his home and needed help. He has a history of leaving the home after seizures, she said.

TFG says that Younkin's win proves that there was election fraud in Virginia in 2016

Nevertheless, Trump told right-wing radio host John Fredericks on Wednesday, "We have a very corrupt election process in this country, and I've exposed that."

Fredericks served as Trump's former campaign chairman in Virginia for 2016 and 2020. In his Wednesday broadcast, Fredericks asked Trump how Youngkin could have won Virginia by over 2 percent when Trump lost the state by 10 percent.

"Yeah, I don't believe that we lost there. I don't believe we lost Virginia," Trump said, "What a mess, what a mess, this election process. Now I don't believe it. They said Virginia's blue. I never believed it was blue."

In other words, Trump implied that last night's gubernatorial election in Virginia wasn't plagued by election fraud because the Republican candidate won. This tracks with his former comments claiming that election fraud had only occurred in the blue states where Trump had lost.

imagine having this hoard next to your home

Korea Town, Los Angeles, the owner has agreed to let the city clean up the hoard at the city's expense.

On Tuesday, the homeowner, a woman in her 90s, agreed to allow city workers to clean the yard, starting Thursday, a city attorney spokesman said.

The woman's son, who lives with her and would not give his name, said he wants to recycle the cans and other items piled in the yard.

He takes care of his mother and occasionally repairs bicycles at a shop in Cypress Park.

“A lot of people say, 'You’ll probably only get $20 for some of this stuff,'” he said, a black bandanna covering his face. “But $20 is $20.”

Now, with the city set to clean up the property, he is sure he will not make any money from recycling.

Harney County votes for possible move to Idaho; longshot Greater Idaho movement keeps plugging away

Harney County voters on Tuesday showed their love for Idaho.

Ballot measure 13-18, which requires local officials to hold meetings about moving the small rural Oregon county into Idaho, passed with more than 63% of the vote. The unofficial results: 1,567 for and 917 against.

Harney became the eighth of Oregon’s 36 counties to vote for considering adjusting Oregon’s border to put much of rural eastern and southern Oregon in Idaho.

“Rural Oregon is declaring as loudly as it can that it does not consent to being misgoverned by Oregon’s leadership and chooses to be governed as part of a state that understands rural Oregon’s values and way of making a living,” said Mike McCarter, who heads Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho, which is behind the initiatives.

Illinois Police Left 'Person in Crisis' in a Parking Lot Alone on Cold Winter Night Before He Was Hi

Illinois Police Left ‘Person in Crisis’ in a Parking Lot Alone on Cold Winter Night Before He Was Hit by a Car: Lawsuit

According to attorneys Jack Casciato and Mohammad Owaynat, Qusai Alkafaween was experiencing a mental health crisis on Dec. 5, 2020, and was briefly hospitalized at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois before being released to New Lenox police.

-----------

The suit says that New Lenox police officer David Dileto could be heard on video saying that police had brought Alkafaween to the border of Will County and Cook County to “basically dump [Plaintiff] off because we are not taking him all the way to Chicago and we aren’t taking him all the way into Orland Park. Hopefully, [Alkafaween] doesn’t ping pong back to [Silver Cross Hospital].”

Alkafaween’s lawyers claim that New Lenox police officers brought him to a parking lot and left him there, even though he was clearly confused and didn’t know where to go.

“This is as far as I can take you right now,” officer Jacob Klepk told Alkafaween, according to the lawsuit and body-worn camera footage. “This is Orland Park so if you start walking north there will be some businesses. Okay. Alright. Take care.”

Alkafaween’s lawyers say that he told the officer that he didn’t know where he was going, and repeatedly asked for help.
