Frederick Douglass statue vandalized in Rochester park

Source: Associated Press

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was ripped from its base in Rochester on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches, delivered in that city in 1852.

Police said the statue of Douglass was taken on Sunday from Maplewood Park, a site along the Underground Railroad where Douglas and Harriet Tubman helped shuttle slaves to freedom.

The statue was found at the brink of the Genesee River gorge about 50 feet from its pedestal, police said. There was damage to the base and a finger.

In Rochester on July 5, 1852, Douglass gave the speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” in which he called the celebration of liberty a sham in a nation that enslaves and oppresses its Black citizens.

Trump-backed five-term Republican lawmaker loses primary to challenger who praised QAnon conspiracy

Source: CNN

(CNN)A five-term Republican congressman endorsed by President Donald Trump conceded his primary reelection bid in Colorado's 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday evening, a stunning upset that will vault his far-right challenger, Lauren Boebert, into the state's general election.

"3rd District Republicans have decided who they want to run against the Democrats this November," Rep. Scott Tipton said in a statement Tuesday evening. "I want to congratulate Lauren Boebert and wish her and her supporters well."

"Congressman @ScottRTipton is a great supporter of the #MAGA Agenda! He fights for your #2A rights and the Border Wall," the President tweeted on Monday. "Scott is working hard for Colorado and has my Complete and Total Endorsement! #CO03."

A staunch Second Amendment advocate, Boebert owns a local restaurant, Shooters Grill, made famous for encouraging its staff to open carry. She recently defied public health orders to reopen the restaurant during the coronavirus pandemic. Boebert also made headlines last year for confronting former Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke over his call for for a mandatory gun-buyback program of assault-style rifles.

Federal Judge Rules Against New York's Outdoor Gathering Restrictions

Source: New York Law Journal

A federal judge on Friday pushed back against New York state’s COVID-19 gathering limits, granting a preliminary injunction in a case that challenged restrictions on houses of worship.

U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe ordered New York officials to not enforce any outdoor gathering limitations, if people are following social-distancing requirements.

According to his order, the officials are also prevented from enforcing indoor gathering limits against the plaintiffs that are greater than restrictions placed on companies in phase two of the state’s reopening plan. That provision is also stipulated on people following social-distancing requirements.

The order is tied to a case filed earlier this month by two priests and three Orthodox Jewish residents of Brooklyn. The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of New York, listed Gov. Andrew Cuomo, state Attorney General Letitia James and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as defendants.

Senate confirms Trump's 200th judicial nominee

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump's 200th judicial nominee was confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in a presidency that has tilted the federal judiciary in a conservative direction for decades to come.

With the confirmation of Judge Cory Wilson to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Trump has successfully appointed 53 appeals court judges, 143 district court judges, two US Court of International Trade judges and two Supreme Court justices -- Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh -- according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office.

Trump, with the help of a determined McConnell and Senate GOP majority, has significantly reshaped the judiciary during his first term, and the 200th appointment milestone illustrates how lasting his legacy will be, as federal judges serve lifetime appointments and many of Trump's picks have been young judges who can serve for many years.

"Judicial confirmations may be President Trump's most important legacy," said CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. "They will shape the nation's laws on abortion, LGBT rights, voting rights and many other issues long after Trump leaves office."

Wisconsin crowd pulls down statue of abolitionist who died fighting slavery

Source: The Associated Press

Crowds outside the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison tore down two statues and attacked a state senator amid protests following the arrest of a Black man who shouted at restaurant customers through a megaphone while carrying a baseball bat.

Video released by the Madison Police Department shows the man talking through the megaphone Tuesday while walking around the restaurant’s outdoor patio. He goes inside and paces through the restaurant with the bat on his shoulder, saying he’s “disturbing” the restaurant and talking about God and the police before walking out.

As many as five officers can be seen taking the man to the sidewalk and carrying him to a police squad car after he initially resisted arrest.
The unrest followed weeks of mostly peaceful protests of the death of George Floyd, who died on May 25 in Minneapolis after a white police officer used his knee to pin down the handcuffed Black man’s neck even after Floyd stopped moving.

Statues of Wisconsin’s motto “Forward” and of Col. Hans Christian Heg were dragged away from the statehouse. The statue of Heg, an anti-slavery activist who fought and died for the Union during the U.S. Civil War, was decapitated and thrown into a Madison lake by protesters, the newspaper said.
