EPA official blew off scheduled meeting with toxic Appalachian coal town

Albert Kelly stays behind in Washington to deal with fallout from Scott Pruitt controversies.

APR 6, 2018, 3:11 PM

On Thursday night, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt’s point person for the EPA’s Superfund program failed to show up at a scheduled meeting with residents of a West Virginia town contaminated by toxic chemicals.

Albert Kelly, senior adviser for the agency’s Superfund program, stayed behind in Washington to help Pruitt deal with the fallout from the barrage of controversies facing the administrator. Instead, the EPA sent Kelly’s top assistant, Nick Falvo, to Minden, West Virginia, to hear from residents about why they believe the town should be placed on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL).

The meeting, held in the sanctuary of the New Beginning Apostolic Church in Minden, attracted approximately 60 community members. Falvo told residents that Kelly would come back to visit Minden himself “once the storm in D.C. clears up,” referring to scandal-plagued Pruitt. This will hopefully be sometime next month, he said.

I really do hope that one of the human beings in this town, or for that matter everyone living there, bring in a jar of water and ask this asshole to drink it right in front of them and tell them its safe, and then ask that the Pruitt asshole come on over and do the same thing in person..................

Trump administration planning to monitor journalists and bloggers

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is looking to compile a database of journalists, bloggers and social media “influencers” here and overseas, Bloomberg reported.

A request filed on April 3 sought a contractor to gather information on people posting across all platforms — radio, print, digital, and television — in 100 languages. Bids are expected on April 13.

According to Bloomberg, the request came amid “heightened concern” about accuracy in media and the potential for foreigners to influence U.S. elections and government policy through “fake news.”

Several lawmakers sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions asking that Qatar-based Al Jazeera register as a foreign agent because its reporting “often directly undermines” U.S. interests in countries such as Syria and Israel.

Kansas Lawmakers Pass $534M School Funding Plan

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Latest on the Kansas Legislature’s debate on increasing school funding to meet a court mandate (all times local):

12:26 a.m. Sunday

Kansas legislators have given their final approval to an increase in spending on the state’s public schools amid intense pressure to respond to a court mandate.

The Senate approved a bill early Sunday to phase in a $534 million increase in education funding over five years. The vote was 21-19.

The House approved the bill on a 63-56 vote. The measure goes to Republican Gov. Jeff Colyer, who has already endorsed it publicly.

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled in October that the state’s current education funding of more than $4 billion a year isn’t sufficient. Many Democrats said the plan will not satisfy the court.

Collins: Pruitt Is Wrong Person To Lead EPA On Policy Grounds Alone

Source: Talking Points Memo

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said Sunday that, based on policy grounds alone, Scott Pruitt should never have been administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Pruitt has faced scandal after scandal in recent weeks, including over the $50-a-night townhouse lease he signed with a prominent lobbyist couple and the two top aides of his who were given raises using a loophole in a law typically used to hire environmental experts.

President Donald Trump has supported Pruitt publicly, and Pruitt reportedly met with Trump on Friday in a bid to keep his job.

In an interview with Collins, CNNs Jake Tapper noted that she had been the lone Republican senator to vote against Pruitts confirmation and asked if she thought Pruitt should lose his job.

News of Facebook's secret tool to delete executive messages caps days of chaos

When Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, embarked on a media apology tour Thursday, it seemed possible that the woman known as Mark Zuckerberg’s “adult supervision” would bring calm to the troubled company’s image.

But the past 48 hours have shown that not even Sandberg’s steady hand can keep this car from spinning out of control.

On Friday, Facebook was again under fire, both over the discovery that the company has a two-tiered privacy standard (one for executives, one for everyone else) and over its use of facial recognition software.

TechCrunch reported late Thursday that Facebook has been using a secret tool to delete messages sent by its executives from the inboxes of their recipients, without disclosing the deletions to the recipients or even recording there was ever a message in the first place.

Natures Great Bird Migration Under Threat By You-Know-Who

Reprinted with permission from Creators.

You could call it the Nebraska bird eclipse. At the first dart of morning light, so many sandhill cranes take off from the banks along the Platte River they darken the sky. This primeval spectacle, part of a massive spring migration from South America to the northern reaches, draws viewers from around the world.

For a century — through depression, world war and countless other national crises — American presidents, Republican and Democrat alike, have honored laws ensuring the survival of these migrating species.

Until this one.

Since Inauguration Day, the Trump administration has engaged in a tireless assault on the nation’s environmental protections. It should thus surprise no one that it is now going after the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Three days before Christmas, it issued a legal opinion that the law doesn’t prohibit the incidental killing of these birds. Penalties for doing so vanished.

4TH DISTRICT DEM LEANN JACOBSEN CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF SINCLAIR STATIONS

The fallout for Sinclair Broadcasting stations continue after a viral video showed them all reading from the same script about “fake news.” Leann Jacobsen, one of the Democratic candidates looking to take on Steve King in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, is calling for a boycott of all the Sinclair stations that cover the Western Iowa seat. She’s also pledging to not run campaign TV ads on any of them and is encouraging her two Democratic primary opponents to do the same.

“The behavior and actions taken by Sinclair Broadcast Group hit at the very core of a free and independent press, a cornerstone of this great nation,” Jacobsen said in an email to her supporters this week. “This is what propaganda looks like and we are seeing it unfold right now.”

It’s a tactic that’s been gaining attention as national outrage on the left grows over the conservative media giant’s influence on local media stations. A Kentucky Democratic congressional candidate, Amy McGrath, drew coverage for her decision to pull her TV ads from Sinclair stations while in the middle of a competitive Democratic primary.

Sinclair owns quite a few outlets across Iowa. Among the owned stations are KPTH (Fox, Channel 44 Sioux City), KMEG (CBS, Channel 14 Sioux City), KDSM-TV (Fox, Channel 17 Des Moines), KGAN (CBS, Channel 2 Cedar Rapids/Waterloo), KFXA (Fox, Channel 28 Cedar Rapids/Waterloo), KTVO (ABC, Channel 2 Ottumwa).

I agree with her one hundred percent, call the local car dealers, attorneys, etc, that place ads on these stations.............................
