Trump vetoes Iran War Powers resolution

Source: CNN

By Nikki Carvajal

Updated 7:07 PM ET, Wed May 6, 2020

(CNN)President Donald Trump on Wednesday vetoed the Iran War Powers resolution, a bipartisan effort to rein in presidential authority to use military force against Iran without congressional approval.

Trump called it a "very insulting resolution" and argued the measure was "based on misunderstandings of facts and law" in a statement.
"This indefinite prohibition is unnecessary and dangerous," the White House said in a separate message to the Senate on Wednesday.

Trump had long threatened a veto, which Congress isn't expected to have enough votes to override.

But passage of the resolution, which Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia introduced following the President's decision to order a strike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in January, represented a significant rebuke of the President and highlighted congressional support for efforts to check the executive branch's war-making powers.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg discharged from the hospital after nonsurgical procedure

Source: CNN

By Ariane de Vogue, CNN Supreme Court Reporter

Updated 7:33 PM ET, Wed May 6, 2020

(CNN)Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg left the hospital Wednesday, a day after undergoing a nonsurgical treatment for a benign gallbladder condition, a court spokeswoman said.

"She is doing well and glad to be home," a statement from the court read. "The Justice will return to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, for follow-up outpatient visits over the next few weeks to eventually remove the gallstone non-surgically."

After the court's first day of oral arguments by phone Monday morning, Ginsburg went for outpatient tests at a hospital in Washington. Those tests, according to the court, "confirmed that she was suffering from a gallstone that had migrated to her cystic duct, blocking it and causing an infection."

Ginsburg has a lengthy history of medical issues. She missed oral arguments for the first time in January 2019, while recovering from surgery after two cancerous nodules were removed from her left lung the month prior. At the time, she participated in the cases by reading transcripts. The liberal justice had already received treatment in November 2018 for three ribs she fractured during a fall in her office. And in August 2019, she was treated for pancreatic cancer.

Trump contradicts nurse he's honoring over PPE availability

Source: CNN

By Nikki Carvajal, CNN

Updated 5:09 PM ET, Wed May 6, 2020

(CNN)President Donald Trump contradicted a nurse he was honoring in the Oval Office on Wednesday, insisting there are no personal protective equipment shortages in the US despite her account that availability could be "sporadic."

A reporter asked the nurses attending the National Nurse Day event if their PPE supplies are where they need to be amid the coronavirus pandemic, and many of them nodded in agreement or answered affirmatively.

"I think it's sporadic," answered Sophia L. Thomas, president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. "I mean, I talk to my colleagues around the country. Certainly there are pockets around the country where PPE is not ideal, but this is an unprecedented time."

Thomas said she works at a community health center in New Orleans, and that her youngest Covid-19 patient was 4 days old.

Supreme embarrassment: The flush heard around the country

By Ariane de Vogue, CNN Supreme Court Reporter

Updated 5:01 PM ET, Wed May 6, 2020

(CNN)Well, someone forgot to mute.

The Supreme Court was making history Wednesday afternoon, holding arguments over the phone because of Covid-19, when all of a sudden there was the distinct sound of a toilet flushing.

Across the country, the public that has never before this week been able to listen in real time to oral arguments held remotely was treated not only to deep questions related to the First Amendment and robocalls but also to someone's apparent bathroom break.

The errant flush from an unknown source comes as the justices, lawyers and the country are dealing with the new realities -- and hazards -- of conducting their business over teleconference lines.

The case at issue concerned the Telephone Consumer Protection Act that prohibits unwanted calls to cellphones by use of an automated system. Challengers say one provision violates the Constitution. Lawyer Roman Martinez, representing political groups challenging the law, was pressing his point when the offending flush occurred.

McEnany condemns 'publicity stunts' days after Trump's Lincoln Memorial stunt

By Oliver Willis -May 6, 2020 6:02 PM

Trump has been using the pandemic to promote himself, even bragging about ratings as the death toll increased.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Donald Trump's new press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, decried "publicity stunts" during the coronavirus pandemic, criticizing House Democrats for trying to hold oversight hearings that the White House is trying to block.

"We don't have time in the middle of a pandemic for publicity stunts," said McEnany. She added, "This is not the time for that, it's not the place for that."

The complaint comes just three days after Trump was interviewed by the conservative Fox News Channel at the Lincoln Memorial. Interior Secretary David Bernhardt deemed the Fox appearance "a core governmental function" in order to lift the ban on events at the memorial.

Notably, Trump claimed during the interview that he was treated "worse than Lincoln," who was assassinated.

GOP congressman: Stay-home orders are a plot to hurt Trump's reelection

By Oliver Willis -May 6, 2020 5:05 PM

Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA) admitted he believes in a conspiracy that sounds 'absolutely crazy' that coronavirus lockdowns are a ploy to hurt Donald Trump's reelection chances.

Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA) baselessly accused "many people" of working to "intentionally stall the economy" with lockdowns put in place to arrest the spread of coronavirus. Graves claimed that the policies have been designed to undermine "the president's efforts in the reelection." He singled out Democratic Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards as someone purportedly engaged in the conspiracy.

Louisiana currently has nearly 30,000 residents infected with the coronavirus, and over 2,040 people have died there. Medical experts such as Dr. Anthony Fauci have warned against rushing to reopen businesses, noting that to do so prematurely could lead to a new surge in infections and deaths.

Infection rate rises across the country as states rush to reopen

By Associated Press -May 6, 2020 11:04 AM

Pockets of America far from New York City are seeing ominous trends.

Take the New York metropolitan area's progress against the coronavirus out of the equation and the numbers show the rest of the United States is moving in the wrong direction, with the known infection rate rising even as states move to lift their lockdowns, an Associated Press analysis found Tuesday.

New confirmed infections per day in the U.S. exceed 20,000, and deaths per day are well over 1,000, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. And public health officials warn that the failure to flatten the curve and drive down the infection rate in places could lead to many more deaths — perhaps tens of thousands — as people are allowed to venture out and businesses reopen.

"Make no mistakes: This virus is still circulating in our community, perhaps even more now than in previous weeks" said Linda Ochs, director of the Health Department in Shawnee County, Kansas.

Elsewhere around the world, Britain's official coronavirus death toll, at more than 29,000, topped that of Italy to become the highest in Europe and second-highest in the world behind the United States. The official number of dead worldwide surpassed a quarter-million, by Johns Hopkins' count, though the true toll is believed to be much higher.

GOP lawmakers cheer Texas salon owner for violating stay-at-home order

Source: American Independent

By Josh Israel -May 6, 2020 12:19 PM

Republican officials across the country have urged reopening businesses despite public health experts' advice that doing so too quickly will result in more cases of the virus.

Republican elected officials are rushing to express support for a Texas salon owner sentenced to a week in jail and a fine for reopening her business in violation of a stay-at-home order issued by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Members of the self-described party of "law and order" attacked a judge who enforced the order.

Dallas County State District Judge Eric Moyé sentenced salon owner Shelley Luther to seven days in jail and a fine of $7,000 for violating the stay-at-home order as well as Moyé's temporary restraining order and a cease-and-desist order from Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins.

Moyé offered her a chance to avoid jail if she apologized and agreed to close the salon until the governor's order is lifted on May 8, but she refused to do either.

In response, Republican lawmakers have rallied around her refusal to obey the orders, attacked the judge, and even helped raise crowdfunding money to assist her.

GOP congressman mocks medical experts: 'We're safer from death if we're not born'

By Oliver Willis -May 6, 2020 1:20 PM

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) has pushed for reopening business despite the potential for an increase in deaths.

Recent data has shown that the number of cases of COVID-19 infection is continuing to rise across the country, even as some states rush to reopen for business.

Trump: 'We want to terminate health care'

Source: American Independent

By Emily Singer -May 6, 2020 3:36 PM
Trump still supports the lawsuit that will invalidate the Affordable Care Act and cause millions to lose their health insurance.

Donald Trump on Wednesday said he still supports a Republican-led lawsuit before the Supreme Court that seeks to invalidate the Affordable Care Act, even amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 1.2 million Americans have tested positive for the virus, and nearly 72,000 have died from it, according to a tally from the Washington Post.

Meanwhile, more than 30 million people have lost their jobs, and with that, they may have lost their employer-sponsored health care. Without the ACA -- better known as Obamacare -- it's unclear how those Americans would secure health insurance to pay for the cost of medical care or hospitalization if they contracted the coronavirus.

Members of Trump's own administration, including Attorney General William Barr, have urged Trump to back off its support of a lawsuit from Republican attorneys general that would invalidate Obamacare. According to CNN, those aides fear the political blowback if Obamacare is repealed, given that the law is popular.
