Unpopular GOP governor is in deep trouble with voters -- in Kentucky

By Dan Desai Martin - December 20, 2018

Republican Gov. Matt Bevin is deeply unpopular as he prepares for a tough 2019 election in Kentucky.

While most Americans have to wait until 2020 to kick even more Republicans out of office, the people of Kentucky will have that opportunity in 2019, when Republican Gov. Matt Bevin is up for re-election.

And judging by the latest poll, Bevin should be very worried.

Eleven months before the election, more than half of Kentuckians (53 percent) disapprove of Bevin’s job performance, with a mere 38 percent approving, according to a Mason-Dixon poll.

Even more worrying for Bevin, he trails by eight points, 40 to 48 percent, in a head-to-head match-up with one of the Democratic front-runners, Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear.

Bevin’s tenure has been rocked by his reprehensible mishandling of massive teacher strikes in the state.

Kentucky teachers went on strike to fight for more education funding in April 2018, following Bevin’s refusal to spend more in a state that ranks 35th in preparing high school graduates for college.

Trump Corruption Scandals Begin To Revolve Around His Inauguration

By Josh Kovensky
December 20, 2018 6:00 am

As far as presidential inaugurations go, Trump’s has turned out to be quintessentially Trumpian – unprecedentedly expensive, and now under investigation by Manhattan federal prosecutors over pay-for-play and misallocation of funds allegations.

But the inaugural committee’s legal troubles have the potential to tie the myriad of Trump administration scandals together – linking investigations into GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy’s alleged pay-for-play schemes with allegations of Trump campaign collusion with Russia.

Broidy, a Los Angeles-based financier with a 2009 bribery conviction under his belt, jumped into Trumpworld from the Cruz campaign as a bundler in May 2016, before being named as a finance vice-chair for Trump’s inaugural committee after the election.

Joining Broidy on the inaugural committee was his friend Rick Gates, the former Paul Manafort associate who pleaded guilty in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe and flipped against his former boss. Broidy and Gates both worked under committee chair, billionaire real estate developer, and Trump confidant Tom Barrack Jr. A spokesman for Barrack denied that he was a target of the investigation.

It’s Broidy who – in many ways – ties things together.

-snip-

Other elements of the inaugural committee appear to have suffered from sloppiness, with multiple revisions on the organization’s FEC filings and scores of donors still undeclared.

It remains unclear how far the investigations into the Trump inauguration have gotten. A tax filing for 2017 recorded $500,000 in legal expenses.

To Speed Up Case, AGs Drop Trump Personally From Emoluments Case

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Josh Kovensky
December 20, 2018 10:08 am

State attorneys general suing Trump for allegedly violating the Constitution’s emoluments clause dismissed claims against the president in his personal capacity in an effort to speed up the case.

Writing that they are dismissing the portion of the suit that targeted Trump’s personal liability over alleged emoluments violations, attorneys general for Maryland and DC wrote that the intent was “to allow the claims against President Trump in his official capacity to move forward expeditiously.”

Other claims focus on Trump in his official capacity. As a government official, the official capacity claim is treated as a lawsuit against the government that Trump represents, compelling the Justice Department to defend against the suit.

That claim is currently being litigated in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, as the Justice Department tries to put a stop to discovery at the district court level before the state attorneys general receive responses to their first round of subpoenas by the Jan. 3 deadline.

Solar system's most distant object is 'Farout' pink dwarf planet

REUTERS
18 DEC 2018 AT 13:48 ET

Scientists have discovered the most distant object known in our solar system, so remote and unusual they chose the nickname “Farout” for the slow-moving, icy, pinkish dwarf planet about 120 to 130 times further from the sun than Earth.

Astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington said on Tuesday the dwarf planet, officially designated as 2018 VG18, is estimated to have a diameter of 310 to 375 miles (500 to 600 km).

There are roughly 50 dwarf planets in the solar system. The biggest are Pluto, with a diameter of about 1,470 miles (2,370 km), and Eris, with a diameter of about 1,445 miles (2,325 km).

“When I saw the object for the first time, it was moving so slowly, it was the slowest thing I’ve ever seen. So I kind of muttered to myself, ‘Far out,” kind of like, ‘That’s cool.’ But it’s also a very-far-out object in distance, so that’s why I went with calling it ‘Farout,’” Sheppard said.

Its discovery was announced on Monday by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center.

“We don’t know too much about it,” Sheppard added. “We only detected it last month. From its brightness, we can determine its size. We know its color. It has a pinkish, reddish hue to it. If you put ices out there and you irradiate them from the solar radiation over time, ices turn kind of a reddish, pinkish color. So we think its surface is probably ice-covered.”

Sheppard and other scientists spotted Farout during their search for extremely distant solar system objects including a potential Planet X that he said could be five to 10 times the size of Earth. In 2014, these researchers proposed the existence of a ninth major planet at the outer reaches of the solar system.

They said Farout is moving so slowly that it might need more than 1,000 years for a single orbit of the sun.

The second-most-distant observed Solar System object is Eris, which orbits at about 96 times the distance of the Sun to the Earth. Pluto orbits at about 34 times the distance of Earth from the Sun.

GOP busted again with no plan to replace Obamacare -- and Paul Krugman rips them apart in only 6 word

TOM BOGGIONI
18 DEC 2018 AT 13:31 ET

Responding to report that President Donald Trump is now open to working with Democrats on a replacement for the Affordable Care Act, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman blasted Republicans for continuing to lead the fight against it without having a replacement plan in hand.

With a conservative federal judge in Texas casting doubt on the future Obamacare in a ruling late last week, the Nobel Prize-winning economist called out the GOP in exceedingly blunt terms on Twitter.

‘If there’s one thing that is absolutely clear after the past 2 years on health care, it is that Rs have no alternative to the ACA, and never will. Their plan is for people to get sick, go bankrupt, and die,” he wrote.

Responding to a comment from HuffPo health care correspondent Jonathan Cohn, who observed, “Seems pretty clear that GOP policy towards the ACA over the last 8 1/2 years has been about revving up the base as much as it’s been about fixing health care,” Krugman tersely responded.

“Half wrong. It was never about fixing health care. Not even slightly,” he wrote.

Former FBI Special Agent Asha Rangappa: 'This Judge Don't Play'

By Matt Shuham
December 18, 2018 1:32 pm

Reacting to Judge Emmet Sullivan’s tongue-lashing of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in court Tuesday, former FBI special agent and current CNN analyst Asha Rangappa had a straightforward read: “This judge don’t play.”

Referring to Flynn’s claims in a sentencing memo that FBI agents who interview him last year may have acted inappropriately, Rangappa said: “You don’t make those kinds of claims in a court document, alleging serious malfeasance, misconduct by the FBI — that calls into question your plea deal, your plea agreement — and then not expect the judge to, A, question you about it, and then, when you backtrack, to get, I think, understandably upset.”

Dems Reject Trump's New Demand Of $1B Immigration 'Slush Fund' To Avert Shutdown

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Cameron Joseph
December 18, 2018 1:32 pm
So much for a deal.

President Trump’s new proposal for avoiding a government shutdown turned out to be a demand for a $1 billion “slush fund” for immigration enforcement rather than a request for wall funding, congressional Democrats said Tuesday afternoon. They rejected that out of hand.

“We cannot accept the offer they made of a billion-dollar slush fund for the President to implement his very wrong immigration policies,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters as she exited a meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Pelosi said the White House “has backed off the wall, that terminology, but what they’d want to do with that $1 billion is problematic.”

Schlapp: Flynn Shouldn't Be In Court -- McCabe, Strzok And Comey Should Be!

By David Taintor
December 18, 2018 11:28 am

They got the wrong guy, according to American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp.

On Fox News Tuesday as Michael Flynn awaited sentencing, Schlapp said he felt worse for the former national security adviser than he ever has.

“The more information comes forward the more I’ve come to the conclusion, Sandra, that the wrong men are in that courtroom today. I actually don’t think it should be Gen. Flynn who is being sentenced for any wrongdoing. I actually think it’s Mccabe and Strzok and Comey who should be in that courtroom. And this is the greatest travesty of justice I’ve seen in politics,” Schlapp told Fox News.
