Texas loses ranking as top grapefruit producer due to brutal cold snap back in February

Texas loses ranking as top grapefruit producer due to brutal cold snap back in February
Nine months following the historic February Freeze across Texas, the state's grapefruit industry is still reaping the detrimental impacts from the frigid weather.

The winter outbreak that had swept into the subtropical southeastern portion of the state on Valentine's Day ushered in icy conditions and extreme cold temperatures that damaged two different crops of grapefruit across the region. This season's crop of grapefruit, which had only been blooming at the time of the winter outbreak, is expected to provide less than a third of an average harvest.

Texas had been the number one provider of fresh grapefruit in the nation ahead of the outbreak, but the damage done to the groves has since dropped them down to third in the nation, Dale Murden, the president of Texas Citrus Mutual, a trade group that represents the interests of the state's citrus growers, told AccuWeather's National Reporter Bill Wadell.

Murden had also spoken with AccuWeather via email back during February. Also a grower, he had mentioned that when temperatures dip below 28 degrees and stay below that mark for five hours or longer, the fruit on the branches begins to freeze on the inside, damaging the crop. "Most everyone" saw temperatures drop to at least 21 degrees, he had added

This news is a month old, but it explains why I couldn't find my wonderful Texas grapefruit at the grocery store today. I miss my 5 pound bags of Texas Sweet Scarletts

I saw the Rolling Stones in Austin!

The venue was huge. It was an outdoor concert and we stood the entire time. (I thought we were gonna have seats..LOL)
It was at a Formula One racetrack.

Mick Jagger's voice and dance moves have not changed. Mick apparently familiarizes himself with locations prior to going onstage. He says, "What do you think of Elon Musk moving to Austin?"...The crowd all says, "Boo!"

Images from Saturday's concert:

Steve Jordan is the new drummer

We just got home. We stayed in the parking lot until after 1 am, then drove back to San Antonio.

How Walker County Jane Doe Was Identified at Last

Since 1980, police and an army of amateur sleuths have puzzled over the East Texas cold case. New forensic DNA techniques have finally given a name to the teenage girl whose brutal murder has haunted so many for so long.

McRae revealed that Jarvis was born on March 9, 1966, meaning she was just fourteen when she was killed. Contrary to longtime theories about her hailing from Rockport or Aransas Pass (two locations Jarvis reportedly mentioned to a Hitchin’ Post waitress), she was actually raised in the small town of Stillwater, Minnesota, about 25 miles east of Minneapolis. According to a lengthy statement from the family read by a sheriff’s deputy, Jarvis had been seized by local authorities at the age of thirteen due to charges of habitual truancy. Shortly after her fourteenth birthday, she ran away for good.

“We lost Sherri more than 41 years ago and we’ve lived in bewilderment every day since, until now as she has finally been found,” the statement said. “Sherri Ann Jarvis was a daughter, sister, cousin and granddaughter. She loved children, animals and horseback riding. . . . She was deprived of so many life experiences as a result of this tragedy. She was denied the opportunity to experience romance and love, marital bliss, the heartache and pain of loss, the pure joy of having children or growing old and being able to reflect on such milestones afforded an abounding lifetime. . . . You are with mom and dad now, Sherri, may you rest in peace.”

According to her brother, Don, who exchanged a series of messages with administrators of the “Who Was Walker County Jane Doe?” Facebook group back in September, the last correspondence Jarvis had with her family came in the form of a letter to her mother postmarked in Denver. In it, Jarvis said she’d contact the family sometime between her eighteenth and twenty-first birthdays. Despite multiple attempts to locate her, including hiring a private investigator and keeping the same home phone number for decades in hopes she’d call someday, they never heard from her again.

Medina County child contracts rabies after being bit by a bat, Texas DSHS says

The state health department said the child is currently being treated in a hospital and that the department has contacted those who may have been exposed.

MEDINA COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) says it is investigating a case of rabies.

A child contracted the disease after being bit by a bat and is now receiving medical treatment at a hospital, according to DSHS. The child is a resident of Medina County, near San Antonio.

Public health personnel have identified all the places where someone could have come in contact with the bat or child and have contacted anyone who may have been exposed to rabies. Health officials are now assessing those individuals to determine their risk and whether they should receive post-exposure vaccination to prevent them from getting sick with rabies.

DSHS said those who need to be assessed have received a phone call or written notification from the state health department.

Ultimate Cheeze

Volver, Volver Vincente Fernández - 1972
Horse in a bar...can you get any more cliche??
Yipping and ay ay...(Sounds like like a cross between coyotes crying, howling and lamentations)
Grown man crying...yeah..the ultimate cheeze...

From Mexico - the song is still incredibly popular. The video makes it so cheezy.

Lyrics in English.
Going back, going back (Volver, Volver)
Versions: #1#2
This passionate love
is completely exhilarated for going back
I'm on my way to madness
and even if everything tortures me I know how to love.

We parted some time ago
but my moment to lose has come
you were very right I listen to my heart
and I'm dying for going back

And going back, going back, going back to your arms once more
I'll get to your whereabouts I know how to lose,
I know how to lose I want to go back, go back go back

We parted some time ago
but my moment to lose has come
you were very right I listen to my heart
and I'm dying for going back

And going back, going back, going back to your arms once more
I'll get to your whereabouts I know how to lose,
I know how to lose I want to go back, go back go back

Illinois man died of rabies, after refusing the vaccine

Woke up with a bat on his neck. He was 87. Happened in Sept. First case in 67 years.

https://www.npr.org/2021/09/29/1041457232/rabies-illinois-man-death-rare-public-health

The majority of human rabies cases in the US involve people who have traveled from another country. Some have come from Mexico/Central America etc, where vampire bats are common. However bats in the US do carry rabies. The Brazilian freetail bat migrates to Mexico in the winter and roosts in caves with vampire bats.

However, the man in the article was bitten by a little brown bat.

Rabies often are not fatal in bats, hence that is why they carry them more than other mammals.

Matthew McConaughey says politics is 'a bag of rats' in interview weighing run for Texas governor

Matthew McConaughey says politics is 'a bag of rats' in interview weighing run for Texas governor

Actor Matthew McConaughey is apparently not interested in running for Texas governor unless he thinks the role would allow him to truly make a difference.

On Thursday, the Texas-born actor went on the New York Times Opinion's Sway podcast, an interview show hosted by Kara Swisher, and explained what he meant by "measuring" a possible run for governor next year, saying he is still learning about politics from mentors — who he refrained from naming — and is considering how useful he would be in the position.

"Is that a place to make real change or is it a place where right now it's a fixed game, you go in there, you just put on a bunch of band-aids, in four years you walk out and they rip them off and you're gone?" the actor told Swisher. "I'm not interested in that."

The self-proclaimed "folk-singing philosopher, poet-statesman" went on to call politics a "broken business" when it comes to political ideologies and said he fears a civil war if politicians remain on a path of "preservation of party" while not truly considering their constituents. McConaughey also reasoned that he could have have more influence in an informal role.

It should have said, "Dazed and Confused Actor is still Dazed and Confused".....

Would he even know how to fill out the paperwork?

About LeftInTX

Always a Democrat. I can't understand conservatives. I try to understand them, but I can't. They don't make sense. Our country has gone so far right since 1981. I was just an average American who took many Democratic values for granted when Reagan was elected. It was like the rug was pulled out from under our society. Reagan ruined our country.
