Kyrsten Sinema Is Threatening to Derail Democrats' Agenda. Again.

Source: Mother Jones

She campaigned on lowering drug costs. Now she’s poised to blow up a spending bill that would do just that.

It’s happening again. On Sunday, Politico reported that Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is opposed to her colleagues’ plan to regulate the price of prescription drugs—and voiced her disagreement at a recent meeting at the White House with President Joe Biden.

Democrats have little margin for error on virtually anything that passes through the Senate, which makes Sinema’s stance a difficult one for the party. The plan to reduce drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies was supposed to be a key part of the major Biden-backed spending bill—essentially an omnibus of the president’s major domestic policy priorities, from climate action to immigration—currently making its way through Congress. The drug plan would save the government a ton of money—helping to cover the costs of the rests of the bill—but more significantly, it’s an enormously popular idea that would make a lot of people’s lives better.

For all of those reasons, lowering the cost of prescription drugs has been a core Democratic priority (at least on paper) for years. Even Donald Trump recognized the value of at least saying he supported lowering drug prices, though he did not particularly care whether it actually happened. Democratic opponents of the plan have tried to cast themselves as moderates—problem-solvers just searching for a pragmatic middle ground. But in drawing the line on drug-pricing, they’re revealing themselves to be the caucus’ true radicals.................................

Two years ago, @LeaderMcConnell
said: “America can't default. That would be a disaster." Yet, now he and @SenateGOP
are trying to force the first-ever default of the U.S. All Members must come together in a spirit of bipartisanship to protect the full faith and credit of the U.S.

'Very Bad For The GOP': Trump Floats Recruitment Effort To Oust McConnell

Source: TPM

By Summer Concepcion September 19, 2021 11:34 a.m.

Former President Trump hasn’t let go of his grievances against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell over supposed insufficient loyalty.

Trump reportedly told senators and allies recently about efforts to depose McConnell and whether any Republicans are interested inn challenging the longtime Senate GOP leader, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Trump declined to confirm whether he was mounting a recruitment effort against McConnell to WSJ. The former president, however, reportedly said he wanted Senate Republicans to give McConnell the boot from the leadership position he has held for nearly 15 years.

“They ought to,” Trump said, according to WSJ. “I think he’s very bad for the Republican Party.”..........................

Trump has always been vindictive. My guess is that trump is too lazy to do any real work of ousting turtle, but will continue to badmouth him.

Federal Panel Refuses To Dismiss Redistricting Lawsuit Brought By Democrats

A federal panel of three judges has refused to dismiss the redistricting lawsuit brought by Democrats.

The ruling against Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature keeps the federal case alive.

Republicans want it to be decided at the state court level.

The judge also combined two lawsuits and allowed five Republican members of the state’s congressional delegation and Democratic Governor Tony Evers to intervene.

A third lawsuit over redistricting is still pending before the state Supreme Court.

Early last year, one of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s longest rivals offered a lesson about why the Kentucky Republican is unfazed by his critics whenever he digs in on a political strategy.

“The people in Kentucky who know him understand that he can’t be shamed into changing,” Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), who has worked with and clashed with McConnell for more than 50 years, said in an interview.

That was January 2020, and the context focused on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) decision to hold articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump over his actions toward Ukraine to try to pressure McConnell into agreeing to hold an expansive Senate trial that would include witnesses.

Now, almost two years later, Democrats have set up a similar type of strategy that, if successful, will force Republicans to accept their fair share of the national debt that now tops $28 trillion. If this strategy fails, the federal government could run out of funding authority and enter another congressionally forced shutdown — the fourth in less than a decade — and create a debt crisis that could rattle global financial markets..............................................
