Kyrsten Sinema Is Threatening to Derail Democrats' Agenda. Again.

She campaigned on lowering drug costs. Now she’s poised to blow up a spending bill that would do just that.

It’s happening again. On Sunday, Politico reported that Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is opposed to her colleagues’ plan to regulate the price of prescription drugs—and voiced her disagreement at a recent meeting at the White House with President Joe Biden.

Democrats have little margin for error on virtually anything that passes through the Senate, which makes Sinema’s stance a difficult one for the party. The plan to reduce drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies was supposed to be a key part of the major Biden-backed spending bill—essentially an omnibus of the president’s major domestic policy priorities, from climate action to immigration—currently making its way through Congress. The drug plan would save the government a ton of money—helping to cover the costs of the rests of the bill—but more significantly, it’s an enormously popular idea that would make a lot of people’s lives better.

For all of those reasons, lowering the cost of prescription drugs has been a core Democratic priority (at least on paper) for years. Even Donald Trump recognized the value of at least saying he supported lowering drug prices, though he did not particularly care whether it actually happened. Democratic opponents of the plan have tried to cast themselves as moderates—problem-solvers just searching for a pragmatic middle ground. But in drawing the line on drug-pricing, they’re revealing themselves to be the caucus’ true radicals.................................

A Senator From Arizona Emerges As A Pharma Favorite
https://khn.org/news/a-senator-from-arizona-emerges-as-a-pharma-favorite/

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema formed a congressional caucus to raise “awareness of the benefits of personalized medicine” in February. Soon after that, employees of pharmaceutical companies donated $35,000 to her campaign committee.

Amgen gave $5,000. So did Genentech and Merck. Sanofi, Pfizer and Eli Lilly all gave $2,500. Each of those companies has invested heavily in personalized medicine, which promises individually tailored drugs that can cost a patient hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Sinema is a first-term Democrat from Arizona but has nonetheless emerged as a pharma favorite in Congress as the industry steers through a new political and economic landscape formed by the coronavirus.

She is a leading recipient of pharma campaign cash even though she’s not up for reelection until 2024 and lacks major committee or subcommittee leadership posts. For the 2019-20 election cycle through March, political action committees run by employees of drug companies and their trade groups gave her $98,500 in campaign funds, Kaiser Health News’ Pharma Cash to Congress database shows.

She started as a Stein/Green then to Dem & soon to be Indy.

Tanking the health benefits to millions who are waiting for Biden's health plan, for her "other" reasons.

Wow.
Betrayed & crashed the Party & will wave bye-bye Dems, & walk away a wealthy politician on to her next political gig.

Dems need to up the requirments for joining & benefitting from the Party affiliation.

Although Stein & her Libertarian Greens would be proud of this maneuver.

Bye Ms Sinema. Go be an Indy now.

We wish you the absolute best.

Look at how rabid the repub win at all costs strategy. I wouldn't put

I believe Angus King, Joe Manchin, John Tester are also against it. Right? I imagine is the consequence of some pretty messed up lobbying structures in place, and less to do with the senators themselves.

What’s her angle here? Campaign cash for an election that is over three years away? What hope would she have to be re-elected if she pisses off all of the Democrats in her state? Republicans would never vote for her, and third party is a way to certain defeat.

Wonder what she’s hearing from her constituents?
