Immigrant and Latino workers in Wisconsin plan to hold a statewide strike on Monday, Oct. 11, to both highlight the vital economic contributions of these communities and to continue calling on the Biden administration and congressional Democrats to deliver on their promise to pass a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

“I’ve lived here for over 30 years as undocumented and it’s been difficult, especially during the pandemic when I had to work longer hours and put my health and life at risk,” Eduardo Perea, an immigrant essential worker from Milwaukee, said in a statement from advocacy group Voces de la Frontera. “It’s necessary to win citizenship this year because it’s time that this country recognizes us as human beings and our contributions as a workforce. Our time is now.”

This is not the first such action the state has seen. During the “Day Without Latinos” strike in 2017, hundreds of small businesses closed their doors and the Milwaukee Public Schools excused students who had parental permission to attend rallies protesting the anti-immigrant policies of the previous president, as well as former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke. Voces de la Frontera said that Monday’s strike is the first of several expected across the country in the coming weeks.....................................................................

lifelong Republican Joy Hofmeister, who is also the State Superintendent has announced that she is switching to the Democratic Party to run for Governor because of the Republican Governor.

“The 57-year-old lifelong Republican told the Tulsa World in an exclusive interview that she is changing her party registration on Thursday in order to launch a bid to unseat Republican incumbent Kevin Stitt,” the newspaper reported.
Joy Hofmeister,

“Governor Stitt is running the state into the ground,” she said. “Through extremism, partisanship, ineffective leadership, he is hurting our education system, our health care, our infrastructure.”

“”And unfortunately, Gov. Stitt has hijacked the Republican Party in Oklahoma,” she added.

Hofmeister was elected statewide in Oklahoma in the 2014 and 2018 elections.

“We have a global pandemic, and it mattered who was governor in 2020,” she explained. “We’ve had 10,000 Oklahomans lost. When you understand now how critical it was to have had a leader who contemplated expert advice and opinion and set an example to help protect Oklahomans, we could have avoided thousands of people dying.” she said

Gableman hires Trump White House attorney for 2020 review who claims without evidence that election

Gableman hires Trump White House attorney for 2020 review who claims without evidence that election was stolen
Patrick Marley Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

MADISON - Assembly Republicans are using an attorney for their review of last year's election who has maintained without evidence that the election was stolen and argued that conservatives need prosecutors who will "let our boys off the hook."

The lawyer, Andrew Kloster, worked in the White House under former President Donald Trump. He told the Assembly Elections Committee in March he is not an election attorney and has a "limited understanding" of election laws.

His hiring surfaced just days after Gableman said he does not have "any understanding of how elections work." Like Kloster, Gableman without evidence has stated the election was stolen.

Gableman's team of about half a dozen has been charged with looking into an election that recounts and court rulings have concluded was won by Joe Biden by 0.6 points. Taxpayers are spending about $680,000 on the effort.

"Certainly somebody who has already declared that the election was stolen is in no position to be any part of a fair or impartial investigation," said Rep. Lisa Subeck, a Madison Democrat who serves on the Assembly Elections Committee. .............................................................

https://www.politicususa.com/2021/10/08/liz-cheney-squashes-rick-wilson-rumor-that-1-6-committee-subpoenas-wont-be-enforced.html

1/6 Committee Vice-Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) squashed a rumor that 1/6 Committee subpoenas will not be enforced.

The rumor was tweeted by The Lincoln Project’s Rick Wilson that subpoenas on presidential staff would not be enforced.

Rep. Cheney replied:

A decision not to enforce the subpoenas would go against everything that committee members have been saying for the past week. There is no reason for them not to enforce the subpoenas. The White House is working with the Committee, Trump’s executive privilege claim looks legally dubious at best, and there is nothing stopping the Committee from enforcing the subpoenas.

Rick Wilson’s rumor took off on Twitter, but it was unsourced and didn’t make sense.

Shattered glass and debris litter a hallway the day after the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. Rioters smashed through reinforced windows to enter the building.

WASHINGTON —

Four major access points that Jan. 6 rioters used to break into and overtake the U.S. Capitol had something unusual in common: They were among a dozen or so ground-floor windows and glass-paned doors that had not been recently reinforced.

The majority of the Capitol’s 658 single-pane windows were quietly upgraded during a 2017-19 renovation of the historic building. The original wooden frames and glass were covered with a second metal frame containing bomb-resistant glass.

But planners skipped about a dozen ground-floor windows, including some located in doors, because they were deemed to be low risk in the event of implosion, largely due to their discreet or shielded location, or because the building couldn’t structurally handle the load of the heavier frames.

And whether by sheer luck, real-time trial and error, or advance knowledge by rioters, several of those vulnerable windows and two glass-paned doors — protected with only a thin Kevlar film added after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks — became easy entry points for hundreds of Trump supporters who overran and ransacked the building on Jan. 6..........................................................

Scoop: Manchin demands progressives prioritize

Source: axios

2 hours ago - Politics & Policy

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is telling colleagues that progressives need to pick just one of President Biden’s three signature policies for helping working families and discard the other two, people familiar with the matter tell Axios.

Why it matters: By forcing progressives to choose among an expanded child tax credit, paid family medical leave or subsidies for child care, Manchin is complicating any potential deal— but also signaling his willingness to negotiate.

He's also aligning himself with Democratic centrists in the House, who want to trim the number of programs in any final package but fund them for longer.
Progressives are hopeful they can retain all of their cherished programs in a final bill by funding many of them for shorter durations and therefore lower the bill's ultimate price tag.................................................

WASHINGTON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Wednesday temporarily blocked a near-total ban on abortion in Texas - the toughest such law in the country - in a challenge brought by President Joe Biden's administration after the U.S. Supreme Court had allowed it to go into effect.

The action by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin prevents the state from enforcing the Republican-backed law, which prohibits women from obtaining an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, while litigation over its legality continues. The case is part of a fierce legal battle over abortion access in the United States, with numerous state pursuing restrictions............

Senate Judiciary squares off over John Lewis voting rights bill

Source: the hill

By Marty Johnson - 10/06/21 05:25 PM EDT

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday held a hearing on the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which was introduced to the upper chamber on Tuesday by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.).

........................

Headlining the hearing was Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke, who has voiced strong support for the legislation aimed at strengthening the Voting Rights Act (VRA).

“I am here today to sound an alarm,” Clark told the Senate panel. “For the Justice Department, restoring and strengthening the Voting Rights Act as a matter of great urgency.”
.............................

..........................
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committee’s top Republican, called the bill named after late Georgia congressman and voting rights champion John Lewis (D) a “disaster” that would federalize state elections.

GOP support for the legislation is scarce; it passed through the House in August along party lines.........................
