Senate Judiciary squares off over John Lewis voting rights bill

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday held a hearing on the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which was introduced to the upper chamber on Tuesday by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.).

Headlining the hearing was Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke, who has voiced strong support for the legislation aimed at strengthening the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
I am here today to sound an alarm, Clark told the Senate panel. For the Justice Department, restoring and strengthening the Voting Rights Act as a matter of great urgency.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committees top Republican, called the bill named after late Georgia congressman and voting rights champion John Lewis (D) a disaster that would federalize state elections.
GOP support for the legislation is scarce; it passed through the House in August along party lines.........................

(131,738 posts)Congress is not "federalizing 'state elections'". They are trying to "RE-FEDERALIZE 'federal elections'", some provisions of which were torpedoed by the SCOTUS with their decisions related to Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, but more importantly, Shelby County v. Holder, which eventually resulted in GOP states running hog wild with lunatic election laws that will impact "federal elections", post- the 2020 election.
It gives them some authority to regulate the time/place/manner of congressional elections.
For presidential elections, it only gives them authority to regulate the time and place.
