The nationwide implications of Ohio's abortion vote

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - We’re less than two weeks away from Election Day in Ohio, where voters will decide on the future of abortion rights, and people across the country are watching the election closely.

Last year, several states, both blue and red, voted to protect abortion rights. This year, Ohio is the only state where the issue is on the ballot.

For the most part, Democrats in red and blue states feel like abortion is a winning issue and it has been so far in states that have already had votes since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

13 Action News caught up with ABC News Political Director Rick Klein who says that those in the world of politics expect most Democrats, including President Biden, to continue making abortion rights key parts of their election campaigns. Klein says if abortion wins in Ohio, that will only make a stronger case for Democrats to focus on the issue.

Virginia candidate barred from distributing misleading sample ballots

A judge barred a candidate in Spotsylvania County from continuing to pass out sample ballots containing misleading information.

Clerk of court candidate Nick Ignacio is not endorsed by Republicans or Democrats, but the sample ballots he has created tell voters he is the choice of both parties.

A judge issued an emergency temporary injunction Thursday, barring Ignacio and his organization, Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots, from handing out any more of the inaccurate sample ballots through Nov. 8.

Ahead of November's election, 26k+ Ohioans were purged from voter rolls. Here's how to see if you were affected

NBC affiliate WCMH reports that while Secretary of State Frank LaRose hasn't announced the canceled voter registrations, the office's website has updated its database of of purged voters. To see if your voter registration has been canceled, click here.

Voters purged from the rolls can re-register to vote on the Secretary of State website. Those who were removed in September who did not register before Oct. 10 cannot vote in the Nov. 7 election.

As of Sept. 29, 26,666 voters were purged in the most recent cycle, according to the database. Of those voters, 3,018 were purged from the Hamilton County voter rolls.

WCMH says in March 2019, 34,692 voters who appeared in the National Change of Address database as having potentially moved were mailed notices that they had four years to take action before they would be removed from the rolls. In February of this year, LaRose directed county election boards to send additional notices to inactive voters with the warning that their registration could be canceled after the May primary.

Abortion rights supporters far outraise opponents and rake in out-of-state money in Ohio election

Supporters of a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in the Ohio Constitution far outraised their anti-abortion opponents in the months leading up to the November election, bringing in nearly $29 million from donors since Sept. 8, the campaign’s latest filings show.

The effort against Issue 1, which would amend the constitution to protect abortion rights, raised just under $10 million in the same period, according to Thursday’s filings.

The largest donations backing the amendment since Sept. 8 came from out-of-state groups, including three gifts totaling $5.3 million from the progressive Sixteen Thirty Fund, based in Washington, D.C. The Sixteen Thirty Fund counts among its funders Hansjörg Wyss, a Swiss billionaire who has given the group more than $200 million since 2016.

The campaign, known as Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights, also received $3.5 million from the New York-based Open Society Policy Center, a lobbying group associated with the billionaire philanthropist George Soros, and $2 million from the American Civil Liberties Union, also based in New York. Billionaires Michael Bloomberg of New York and Abigail Wexner, the Ohio-based wife of retired Limited Brands founder Les Wexner, each gave $1 million.

Election complaints filed over political mailers in Boulder races

A former member of the Boulder City Council has filed two election complaints over two new political mailers that began circulating recently.

The more controversial of the mailers, which was paid for by the Working Families Party National PAC, was an attack ad centered on Boulder mayor candidate Bob Yates, who currently serves on City Council.

The ad also mentioned the three other candidates for this year’s mayoral contest, which will be done via ranked choice voting: Councilmember Nicole Speer, incumbent Mayor Aaron Brockett and Paul Tweedlie.

The front of the mailer states that the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, was a “direct attack on our democracy, our values and our freedoms” and that Yates was a registered Republican until May 2022, “16 months after the insurrection.”

CA: Santa Ana's Police Union-Backed Recall Election Could be Stalled

The police union-backed recall election of Santa Ana City Councilwoman Jessie Lopez has been thrown into question, as Orange County’s elections chief said today that recall petitioners and his office went off the wrong map when proponents gathered signatures and officials reviewed them.

“In the process of preparing for the election, we became aware that Ms. Lopez was elected based on Santa Ana’s pre-redistricting boundaries for Ward 3. However, the recall petition was circulated and reviewed based on Ward 3’s post-redistricting boundaries,” wrote OC Registrar of Voters Bob Page in a Thursday letter to city officials.

It’s a difference, Page said, that would have “impacted whether the recall petition had sufficient valid signatures.”

“If the signatures from voters in the current Ward 3 who did not reside in the old Ward 3 were excluded from the count, then the recall petition would have failed by 230 signatures, rather than being deemed sufficient,” Page wrote.

Indianapolis mayor candidates face off in final debate before 2023 election

INDIANAPOLIS — In the last debate before November’s election, current Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett (D) and challenger Jefferson Shreve (R) spoke about many topics during Thursday evening’s debate, including Hogsett’s whereabouts during the 2020 riots, the shortage of Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and the reinvention of downtown Indianapolis.

According to previous reports, Hogsett is seeking his third term as the mayor of Indianapolis and won the Democratic primary in May. Shreve, a former City-County councilor, won the Republican primary in May. Both have raised millions of dollars for their respective campaigns, a record amount for an Indianapolis mayoral race.

This comes as early voting for the 2023 election is occurring throughout the city of Indianapolis. Voters can also vote at various locations throughout the city on Election Day on Nov. 7.

To begin the debate, both candidates were asked about what makes them qualified to lead the city of Indianapolis.
