California Pizza Kitchen Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection
AN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/CNN) The California Pizza Kitchen filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Thursday as San Francisco Bay Area restaurants continue to struggle for survival amid COVID-19 restrictions prohibiting indoor dining.
The popular chain has 14 restaurants throughout the Bay Area. The 35-year-old pizza chain warned that it will close unprofitable locations, but didnt say how many of its 200 global restaurants will be affected.
The unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on our operations certainly created additional challenges, but this agreement from our lenders demonstrates their commitment to CPKs viability as an ongoing business, CEO Jim Hyatt said in a release.
CPK secured nearly $47 million in new financing to ensure operations continue normally. It has around $13 million cash on hand and hasnt paid rent for the past several months on a majority of its locations.
The temporary closure of indoor dining has also been brutal for the company, because on-premise dining makes up 80% of its sales, the company said in a filing. Revenues are currently down 40% compared to the same time a year ago, it said.

AZ-06: In deal, Rep. David Schweikert admits 11 ethics violations, to pay $50,000 fine
Rep. David Schweikert reached a deal announced Thursday to end a longstanding House Ethics Committee investigation by admitting to 11 rules violations, accepting a reprimand and agreeing to pay a $50,000 fine.
The committee found "substantial evidence" of violations by the five-term Arizona Republican stretching from 2010 into 2018 and faulted him for evasive, stalling tactics that helped him skirt more serious violations.
As it was, the violations the committee did find include undisclosed loans and campaign contributions; misuse of campaign funds for personal purposes; improper spending by his office; and an environment where office staffers were pressured to do political work.
The proposed deal caps an investigation that has cast a shadow over Schweikerts political career since late 2017, when allegations of misspending first surfaced. The House of Representatives must adopt a resolution on the matter to make it final.

Ohio House votes to remove Larry Householder as Ohio Speaker following corruption arrest
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio House of Representatives has voted unanimously to remove Larry Householder as Ohio House speaker a little more than one week following his arrest on federal corruption allegations.
Members approved the measure swiftly without debate in a Thursday morning session. The vote was 90-0, with 9 members, including Householder, absent. Additional yes votes could trickle in as Thursday continues some of the absent members were nearby but missed the vote since it happened so quickly.
The move doesnt remove Householder from office entirely it just removes him from his job as Speaker, a powerful position that schedules House votes and decides what will be voted on. Householder remains in office, and is up for re-election in November.
Householder, a political aide and three lobbyists, including former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges, were arrested last Tuesday in what federal authorities described as a $60 million bribery scheme. They were formally indicted on Thursday, minutes before the vote.

Police arrest former activist suspected of Arizona Democratic Party headquarters arson
Phoenix police have arrested Matthew Egler, a Democratic activist who party officials say has had a long and troubled history with the Maricopa County Party over the years, for the fire that destroyed Arizona Democratic Party's headquarters last week.
The fire ruined historical political memorabilia and party infrastructure ahead of Tuesday's primary election.
After a nearly weeklong investigation, Phoenix police on Wednesday identified Egler, 29, of Peoria, in connection with the fire set to the party's headquarters. The fire occurred after midnight on Friday, last week.
In announcing the arrest, police released footage of a dark car parked near the north side of the building, and a person lighting the fire outside of the building. As the fire grows, the person walks back to the car.
