Women-only Wonder Woman showings sell out despite outcry

Plans by US movie theaters to host women-only screenings of Wonder Woman have produced support and some grumbling about gender discrimination.

Despite criticism on social media, much of it from men, some such screenings are selling out. Several more have been added.

The offer of special screenings began recently in Austin, Texas, where Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has previously held specialty screenings for military veterans and others. Regarding plans for women-only Wonder Woman showings, the Alamo venue in Brooklyn, New York posted a statement online.

“Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for several special shows at the Alamo Downtown Brooklyn,” it said.

“And when we say ‘women (and people who identify as women) only’, we mean it. So lasso your geeky girlfriends together and grab your tickets to this celebration of one of the most enduring and inspiring characters ever created.”

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has sought to reassure soldiers who might be accused of committing abuses under martial law and jokingly said that if any of them were to rape three women, he would personally claim responsibility for it.

Duterte is notorious for comments often deemed offensive and made the remark as a joke, reiterating that only he would be liable for any backlash over military rule on southern Mindanao island. He has, however, said he would not tolerate abuses.

“If you go down, I go down. But for this martial law and the consequences of martial law and the ramifications of martial law, I and I alone would be responsible, just do your job I will take care of the rest,” Duterte said on Friday, according to a president’s office transcript.

“I’ll imprison you myself,” he said, referring to any soldiers who commit violations, then he joked: “If you had raped three, I will admit it, that’s on me.”

Duterte made the remark in a speech to soldiers on Mindanao island, where he imposed martial law on Tuesday to try to crush Islamic State-linked rebels, who have been battling the military after laying siege to a southern city.

It was not the first time Duterte has made a joke about rape. He caused outrage in the lead-up to his presidential election win last year when he recalled a 1989 prison riot in which an Australian missionary was killed, and inmates had lined up to rape her.

In what was intended as a joke, Duterte said the victim was “beautiful” and as mayor of Davao city where the riot took place, he should have been first in line. He later apologised and said he did not intend to disrespect women or rape victims.

However, Politico notes that one former Kushner employee believes that he’s not qualified to hold any kind of job, let alone a job with so many potentially world-changing responsibilities.

Harleen Kahlon, who worked briefly as Head of Digital at Kushner’s publication Observer, explains to Politico that she quit working for the young real estate mogul when he blatantly stiffed her on an agreed-upon bonus she had earned for meeting certain traffic metrics. When she went to collect her bonus, Kushner told her he couldn’t pay due to financial constraints and advised her to “take one for the team” and forsake the money she was owed.

The publication also cites a Facebook post that Kahlon wrote last year outlining why Kushner isn’t smart or talented enough to hold any job that he’s not handed by his rich relatives.

“We’re talking about a guy who isn’t particularly bright or hard-working, doesn’t actually know anything, has bought his way into everything ever (with money he got from his criminal father), who is deeply insecure and obsessed with fame (you don’t buy the NYO, marry Ivanka Trump, or constantly talk about the phone calls you get from celebrities if it’s in your nature to ‘shun the spotlight’), and who is basically a shithead,” she wrote.

Sheriff David Clarke directed officers to hassle man after brief exchange on plane: report

Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee County, Wis., reportedly directed some of his officers to hassle a man at an airport after Clarke and the man had a brief verbal exchange, according to a new report.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Clarke and the man, 24-year-old Dan Black, had a brief verbal exchange aboard an American Airlines flight in January. Clarke claims that Black asked him if he was Sheriff Clarke.

Clarke’s claims come as a response to a lawsuit filed by Black against Clarke, Milwaukee County and several unnamed deputies, according to the Journal Sentinel.

After Black and Clarke’s exchange, Clarke sent a text message to Captain Mark Witek telling Witek what to do with Black.

“Just a field interview, no arrest unless he becomes an asshole with your guys,” Clarke wrote. “Follow him to baggage and out the door.”
