Pope Francis: questions remain over his role during Argentina's dictatorship

As head of the Jesuit order from 1973 to 1979, Jorge Bergoglio – as the new pope was known until yesterday – was a member of the hierarachy during the period when the wider Catholic church backed the military government and called for their followers to be patriotic.

Bergoglio twice refused to testify in court about his role as head of the Jesuit order. When he eventually appeared in front of a judge in 2010, he was accused by lawyers of being evasive.

The main charge against Bergoglio involves the kidnapping of two Jesuit priests, Orland Yorio and Francisco Jalics, who were taken by Navy officers in May 1976 and held under inhumane conditions for the missionary work they conducted in the country's slums, a politically risky activity at the time.

What do you look for in a summer day camp?

It's that time of year when we look for something to keep our 7-year son form sitting at home all day. We spent all of yesterday afternoon at the San Francisco Summer Activities Fair, with day camps teaching everything from science and engineering to cooking to arts and crafts. They all seem nice, but I think the best place he can be is in a place where he develops leadership and team building skills. What do you look for?

Turkish Woman Kills And Decapitates Rapist – Delivers His Head To Town Square

Yildirim says that Gider raped her, impregnated her and then, snuck into her home while she was sleeping and photographed her. The pictures revealed a pregnant body and Gider threatened to publish the pictures if she didn’t obey him.

“I chased him,” she said. “He fell on the ground. He started cussing. I shot his sexual organ this time. He became quiet. I knew he was dead. I then cut his head off.”

She brought the head to the town square and in front of men sitting at a coffee House, she said, “Don’t talk behind my back, don’t play with my honor. Here is the head of the man who played with my honor.”

She was arrested and is in jail.

Michigan Senate: Levin to Retire, But Open Seat Remains Safe for Now

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin’s decision to not seek a seventh term certainly doesn’t come as a shock -- and it also doesn’t immediately warrant a change in how competitive his seat in Michigan should be viewed.

The rare open seat -- the last since Spencer Abraham (R) was elected in 1994 -- is sure to draw interest on both sides, but Democrats still start out with a distinct advantage, and Republican chances may not be fully realized until the GOP nominee comes into focus.

A long line of Democrats are likely to eye the seat: Rep. Gary Peters, former Rep. Mark Schauer, and 2010 secretary of state nominee Jocelyn Benson. Peters won a competitive member vs, member primary in 2010 against fellow Rep. Hansen Clarke, and observers say that he has been eyeing statewide office. But with GOP Gov. Rick Snyder’s poll number slipping, ambitious Democrats now have two statewide offices to consider.

North Korea says it ends peace pacts with South

North Korea says it is scrapping all non-aggression pacts with South Korea, closing its hotline with Seoul and closing the crossing point between the two countries.

The announcement follows a fresh round of UN sanctions against Pyongyang over its controversial nuclear programme.

The UN resolution was in response to the North's nuclear test last month.

Earlier, Pyongyang vowed to use its right to a pre-emptive nuclear strike against its "aggressors".

At least Rand Paul got up on his feet and spoke.

I can't stand the guy, but he filibustered Brennon the way it's supposed to be done in front of the Senate and the country. No anonymous holds. And for that, I have to give him his due.

Bin Laden's Son-in-Law in Custody in New York

WASHINGTON—A son-in-law of Osama bin Laden and longtime suspected member of al Qaeda has been captured and brought to New York City by U.S. counterterrorism operatives, according to multiple people familiar with the matter.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, identified by counterterrorism officials as a spokesman for the terror group once led by his father-in-law, was recently deported from Turkey to Jordan, where U.S. agents captured him, one person familiar with the case said.

On Thursday, officials said the suspect was in federal custody in New York City and would likely make a court appearance later this week. It wasn't yet clear what specific charges he faces, but U.S. officials consider him a longtime member of the core al Qaeda terrorist group.
