ST THOMAS, USVI Democrat Albert Bryan has emerged victorious over incumbent US Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp in a runoff election on Tuesday to become the ninth elected governor of the USVI
Bryan ended the night with 11,796 votes to Mapps 9,766, according to the Election System of the Virgin Islands. Mapp conceded the election just after 9:30 pm on Tuesday night at his St Thomas headquarters.
Mapp is only the third incumbent governor in USVI history to be defeated after their first term; the other governors to experience a similar fate were Roy Lester Schneider, who was roundly beaten by former Governor Charles Turnbull in 1998, and Melvin Evans in 1974.
With the slogan Change Course Now, calling on US Virgin Islanders to abandon the current administrations style of governance for something different, the Bryan-Roach campaign was able to successful capitalize on Mapps many self-inflicted wounds, much of which were caused by the governors character and unbridled tongue, the Virgin Islands Consortium reported.
According to some political observers, Mapps defeat was not because he failed to move the US Virgin Islands forward, but because of a character and demeanour that was rejected by residents.

How big was the blue wave in Michigan?
Consider this: In all 83 Michigan counties, the share of Democratic votes increased compared to the 2016 presidential election.
That's based on the percentages of voters who backed Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump in 2016 compared to the collective votes cast in the eight statewide races on the 2018 ballot. (The eight races: Governor, U.S. Senate, attorney general, secretary of state, state Board of Education and three university boards.)
That blue wave resulted in a Democratic sweep of the statewide offices. Michigan Democrats also flipped two Congressional seats from red to blue as well as five seats each in the state House and Senate.
Still, the Democratic surge this November didn't wipe out Trump's 2016 refashioning of Michigan's political scene.
In fact, Michigan appears to be part of the national re-alignment of Democrats and Republicans: Affluent, college-educated voters are trending blue, even as Trump seems to be solidifying his base among the white working-class, especially in rural counties.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) A Bay Area civil rights attorney is calling for a boycott of the San Francisco Giants after their principal owner Charles Johnson made donations to the campaign of a controversial U.S. Senate candidate in Mississippi.
President Trump announced that he will be traveling to Mississippi on Monday to endorse Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith. In a tweet, Trump called her an outstanding person.
Hyde-Smith has been at the center of controversy for making a recent joke about public hanging.
It was reported that she also wore a Confederate hat while visiting a museum for Confederate president Jefferson Davis.
Johnson, who lives in Florida, had previously apologized a few months ago after supporting a Republican Super PAC which was proven to be making racist radio ads. At the time, Johnson said he didnt realize thats what the group was doing.
John Burris, a civil rights attorney, says he is a huge fan, but that its time for Giants fans to withdraw their support for the Johnson and team amid the controversy.
