Amy Klobuchar: In 230 years, not a single room in the Senate has been named for a woman. Last week

In 230 years, not a single room in the Senate has been named for a woman. Last week @RoyBlunt and I changed that.

Two rooms with historic view: After 230 years, women’s names adorn Senate rooms

Sen. Amy Klobuchar noticed right away as the male senators glanced around, wondering how their bipartisan prayer breakfast meeting room had all these pictures of women, powerful women.

Where, they wondered, did all this come from?

“Well, this is the Barbara Mikulski room now,” the Democrat from Minnesota told them.

For the first time in more than 230 years of Senate history, two rooms were formally named last week in honor of women: Mikulski (D-Md.), who retired at the end of 2016 as the longest-serving female senator, and the late Margaret Chase Smith (R-Maine), the first woman to win election to the House and the Senate, and who stood up to McCarthyism in the 1950s.

Uvalde Hires Private Law Firm to Argue It Doesn't Have to Release School Shooting Public Records

Source: Vice

The City of Uvalde and its police department are working with a private law firm to prevent the release of nearly any record related to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in which 19 children and two teachers died, according to a letter obtained by Motherboard in response to a series of public information requests we made. The public records Uvalde is trying to suppress include body camera footage, photos, 911 calls, emails, text messages, criminal records, and more.

“The City has not voluntarily released any information to a member of the public,” the city’s lawyer, Cynthia Trevino, who works for the private law firm Denton Navarro Rocha Bernal & Zech, wrote in a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The city wrote the letter asking Paxton for a determination about what information it is required to release to the public, which is standard practice in Texas. Paxton's office will eventually rule which of the city's arguments have merit and will determine which, if any, public records it is required to release.

The letter makes clear, however, that the city and its police department want to be exempted from releasing a wide variety of records in part because it is being sued, in part because some of the records could include “highly embarrassing information,” in part because some of the information is “not of legitimate concern to the public,” in part because the information could reveal “methods, techniques, and strategies for preventing and predicting crime,” in part because some of the information may cause or may "regard … emotional/mental distress," and in part because its response to the shooting is being investigated by the Texas Rangers, the FBI, and the Uvalde County District Attorney.

The letter explains that Uvalde has at least one in-house attorney (whose communications it is trying to prevent from public release), and yet, it is using outside private counsel to deal with a matter of extreme importance and public interest. Uvalde’s city government and its police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Motherboard.

Anna Delvey Is in the NFT Business Now

What’s a woman to do after she’s been found guilty of grand larceny and theft of services and becomes one of the most famous “scammers” of our times? Sell NFTs, of course. Anna Sorokin, also known as Anna Delvey, announced on Thursday that she was launching her own exclusive collection of NFTs — a business everyone knows is totally on the up and up, no sketchiness whatsoever.

“I’m trying to move away from this, like, quote, unquote scammer persona,” Sorokin told NBC News of her new business venture. “This is, like totally, has been pushed upon me by the prosecution and by the following media and by the Netflix show, but I’m trying to move away from that definitely.” The ten newly minted NFTs are called “Reinventing Anna” — a play on the Netflix series based on her life as a New York socialite titled Inventing Anna, so she’s not moving too far away from her scammer stardom.

The Reinventing Anna NFT will supposedly grant the owners exclusive access to Sorokin, who is still currently in ICE custody after overstaying her visa. According to Sorokin’s official website, NFT buyers will get access to “exclusive livestreams and other online and metaverse events.” There will also be a tier of “top holders,” who will “have access to coveted personal items from her time in prison,” sketches by Sorokin, and one-on-one phone calls with the woman herself.

As for the NFT itself, it was created in collaboration with artist and animator Jonny Ryan, and features a credit-card design — the Anna Access Card — with a comic-style image of a prisoner telling their visitor, “You look poor.”

I had the absolute honor of introducing Javier Gomez at the White House Pride Month celebration.

Javier bravely shared his story of coming out as a teenager in Miami, Florida.

Who is Javier Gomez?: The student protest leader invited to the White House's Pride Month event

After Florida's Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the controversial House Bill 1557 into law, also known as the "Don't Say Gay" bill, a 17-year-old student from Miami named Javier Gomez led a rally against the bill.

Gomez, who was president of the Gay Straight Alliance at Miami’s iPrep Academy, then became more and more known as a student protest leader in the fight against the controversial Florida law as the demonstrations started to really pick up steam.

“I really just wanted my school to understand how pivotal and monumental their participation is,” as Gomez was quoted by NBC News as saying. “It shows Florida legislators that this is important. This is an affected community, and we need to stand for it.”

On Wednesday, the White House invited Gomez to speak during Biden's planned Pride Month event where the president signed an executive order on "preventing and combatting discrimination against LGBTQI+ Americans."
