friendly_iconoclast's JournalWhy did support for a new AWB slip? Those that want one made the same mistakes the teabaggers did.
To wit:
1) They mistook the enthusiasm of those who already agreed with them for a groundswell of support, and
2) They tried to get everything they wanted, instead of trying to get what they plausibly could and working
from that. In other words, they are anti-reformists or what you might call "the good is the enemy of the perfect"
types. Extremists quickly became the public face of both movements.
Why are "gun safety advocates" so poor at actual gun safety?
First, we had this classic-with Dianne Feinstein's finger on the trigger and not looking where she's pointing
the muzzle of the gun she's holding...
Then we have Joe Biden advocating firing a shotgun through a closed door
without knowing what's on the other side...
The latest ones are from a couple of videos from Mayors Against Illegal Guns posted on YouTube.
The first one is entitled, with no irony intented, "Responsible"
Note the finger on the trigger and the muzzle held in an unsafe manner, as in
another video with the same purported "gun owner":
Gee, I wonder what the chances are of Mr. "Responsible" getting his Second Amendment rights
curtailed, as advocated here on another DU thread:

Answer: Slim to none, of course-he works for MAIG, and gun control is not for the likes of them
- just us.
The Venn Diagram of Irrational Nonsense

I like the term "National Republican Armory". Feel free to use it!
(And yes, 'armory' is the proper term, not 'arsenal'- one is where you keep the guns, the other is
where they are made)
For those who welcomed the entry of Michael Bloomberg into Democratic primary politics...
...and thus accepting Citizens United- a few words from the man himself ought to make you think twice about that:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/03/18/bloomberg-says-hes-focused-on-background-checks/
Asked if his efforts to influence political races were similar to actions taken by Charles and David Kochthe billionaire brothers who've been much maligned by opponents for injecting their wealth into the political sceneBloomberg said he has no problem with what they're doing.
He added he knows David Koch well and argued Koch is simply tying to help "get the policies that he thinks would be better for society."
"He's using his own money. I have no problems with what he's doing. And I'm sure he wouldn't have any problems with what I've done," he said.
So what happens if and when he starts doing this in districts/states that aren't Democratic locks?
Will you still trust him then?
"...I don't really care what limiting the scope of RKBA might cost the Democrats in votes."

Boston Globe: Prospects limited for new gun control laws

WASHINGTON Advocates for stricter gun controls have more money this year, more energy, the presidents backing, and the national outrage over the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre on their side. But there already is a sense in Washington that they will have to settle for more modest gains in the months ahead than an assault weapons ban or sharp limits on magazine capacity.
Just how much the shootings last year in Newtown, Conn. as well as the mass shooting in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. have changed the political climate will be tested Thursday when the Senate Judiciary Committee reviews a series of proposals to curb gun violence.
If we dont get [gun control] this time, we never will, said Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston, who cochairs a gun-control advocacy group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York...
Too bad, Tommy...
West Virginia Democrats resist attempts at gun control

CHARLES TOWN Sen. Joe Manchin said in an interview Tuesday that groups running ads indicating that he supports sweeping gun control measures are not being truthful.
Let me make it very clear: the only thing Im working on is a criminal and mental background check, Manchin said. Anything else people have heard is basically a lie. They are just trying to get people excited and scared.
Political pundits have wondered in recent weeks where centrist Democrats from Blue Dog states, like Manchin, will stand on an assault weapons ban and a bill limiting magazine capacity that are expected to be introduced during this congressional session.
Manchin said he is opposed to such measures himself and thinks they would not make it through the Senate.

CHARLESTON (AP) West Virginia would void local and county-wide gun laws under a measure endorsed Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee, advancing it toward a vote by the full House of Delegates.
A non-unanimous voice vote approved the bill, which would make clear that only the Legislature can regulate firearms or ammunition.
The measure would strike down any ordinances inconsistent with state law, including several adopted in the 1990s by Charleston, the states largest city and its capital. Those limit handgun purchases to one per month, and require the buyer to wait 72 hours before receiving the weapon...
...A Republican, Jones also cited how sponsors of Tuesdays bill include such Democrats as House Majority Leader Brent Boggs and Judiciary Chairman Tim Miley. In a state with high rates of gun ownership, Jones questioned whether that party was seeking to outmaneuver GOP lawmakers on the issue.
Hmm. I wonder who will be heard from first- the regional bigots or the "better pure than in power crowd"?
Bill suggests anger management classes for those purchasing ammo
http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/bill-suggests-anger-management-classes-those-purch/nWkbQ/The bill was filed less than a week ago and it would require anyone buying ammunition to take a two-hour anger management course.
Sen. Audrey Gibson of Jacksonville wrote the bill.
"You have to use your driver's license to purchase cold medications these days, but there is no mechanism for using a driver's license or no database on how much ammunition is out there."
