Sherman A1's JournalUK Royal Navy Testing Crewless Minehunter
The U.K. Royal Navy said it is testing a new crewless minehunter as part of its drive toward autonomous systems.
Developed through a joint Anglo-French Maritime Mine Counter Measures program, the system is designed to detect the latest mine threats while reducing the risk to the lives of those searching for them. It comprises an uncrewed surface vessel, towed sonar and a portable operation center, and is now undergoing rigorous capability development trials.
Demonstrators have been delivered to both the Royal and French Navies, the U.K. model handed over in Plymouth by Thales UK, OCCAR and Defense Equipment and Support, the MODs procurement arm.
Commodore Steve Prest, the Royal Navys Deputy Director Acquisition, said, The future of mine warfare is here: the Royal Navys minehunting capability program is real; its happening; its delivering. We have a lot to learn about this transformational approach to mine warfare, but there is much, much more to come.

Northam encourages Virginians to stay away from the unvaccinated as COVID-19 cases surge
RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam says the current influx of COVID-19 cases is a reason for concern, but not for panic.
Northam highlighted vaccinations as a way for individuals to protect themselves and those they care about from the new omicron variant.
"The data are clear: Nearly everyone going to the hospital with COVID is unvaccinated," a statement from Northam reads. "This is entirely avoidable if everyone gets their shots."

San Francisco to require boosters for certain workers
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) San Francisco will now require law enforcement in certain settings and other people in higher-risk workplaces to receive a coronavirus booster by Feb. 1, the city announced Wednesday, as the omicron variant wreaks havoc across the country.
The move comes more than a week after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the state will require California's roughly 2.5 million health care workers to get their booster shots by Feb. 1 or risk losing their jobs.
San Francisco's requirements which also encompass health care workers list professions that are not among the state's order. Changes to the health order affect both the city and county of San Francisco.
The health order now includes booster requirements for people who work in higher-risk settings, including adult care facilities, adult day programs, dental offices, home health care workers and pharmacists, as well as workers who visit such settings, like police officers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and lawyers whose clients are in jails.

Fact Check Team: Should schools return to remote learning?
WASHINGTON (TND) America is seeing about 268,000 new cases of COVID-19 per day as omicron rages through the country. Now, some schools are making plans for remote learning until the virus is under control.
The National Desks Fact Check Team has been researching districts nationwide and the impact of school closures on childrens health.
Chicago Public Schools gave out 150,000 take-home coronavirus testing kits ahead of winter break in an effort to keep cases low when classes return at the districts more than 650 schools. If there is an outbreak, theyve geared up for remote learning by purchasing 100,000 laptops.

Winter storm to impact mid-Missouri on Saturday January 1, 2022.
NEW BLOOMFIELD ***Stay tuned for more updates in the next 24 hours***
Winter storm watches were placed for most of mid-Missouri early Thursday in advance of the system set to kick off the year 2022 on Saturday. This storm is going to impact us with a mixed bag of precipitation.
Temperatures are going to warm to near 60 Friday afternoon and stay warm just before the ball drops on New Year's Eve. This storm will move over land later Thursday. Some small tweaks to this forecast are possible as this storm moves onto land.
Mid-Missouri is going to be a part of the "transition zone", which is why we are expecting a mixed bag of precipitation. Rain looks to start south of Highway 50 after midnight, while colder air begins to move into the winter storm watch area. The cut-off of air warm enough to support just rain, and air to support sleet/freezing rain/snow, is going to be sharp. This makes the overall forecast hard to pinpoint. Take a look at the futurecast photos and the sharp cut-off in precipitation type in mid-Missouri. Any small shift in the track of this system, north or south, will make a big difference in what precipitation you see in your area.

Indonesia Says It Will Allow Stranded Rohingya Boat to Seek Refuge
Indonesia will allow a boat packed with Rohingya which had become stranded off its coast to dock in the Southeast Asian country, its security ministry said on Wednesday, after calls from aid organizations to allow the vessel to seek refuge.
Local officials in Aceh, a province on the western island of Sumatra said on Tuesday that they would provide the roughly 120 passengers on board with food, medicine and water, but would not allow them to seek refuge in Indonesia, despite international pleas to do so.
"Today, the Indonesian government decided, in the name of humanity, to give refuge to Rohingya refugees currently afloat on a boat near Biereun district, Aceh," Armed Wijaya, an official at Indonesia's chief security ministry, said in a statement.
"The decision was made after considering the emergency conditions the refugees are experiencing onboard the boat," he said. Its passengers were mostly women and children, he added.
