Stock futures point to more losses Friday following market's worst day since 'Black Monday'

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/12/futures-stock-market-coronavirus-concerns.html

PUBLISHED THU, MAR 12 20206:05 PM EDT UPDATED 10 MIN AGO

Stock futures pointed to more pain ahead on Friday as they fell in overnight trading following major averages losing the most since the “Black Monday” market crash in 1987.

As of 8:24 p.m. ET Thursday, futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 109 points, pointing to an implied opening drop of 221.62 points for the index at the Friday open. S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures also pointed to losses when the indexes open on Friday.

The overnight action followed the official end of the record-long bull market run. The S&P 500 plummeted 9.5% in its worst day in more than three decades Thursday, joining the Dow in a bear market, or more than 20% from its recent peak. The Dow also suffered its worst point drop ever and the biggest percentage decline since 1987.

The market’s historic drop on Thursday indicated that investors believe the government’s fiscal plans and the Federal Reserve’s ramped-up funding actions wouldn’t be sufficient to offset the economic impact from the coronavirus.

Kevin Love commits $100,000 to the Cleveland Cavaliers arena and support staff

Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. And the fear and anxiety resulting from the recent outbreak of COVID-19 can be extremely overwhelming.

Through the game of basketball, we've been able to address major issues and stand together as a progressive league that cares about the players, the fans, and the communities where we work. I'm concerned about the level of anxiety that everyone is feeling and that is why I'm committing $100,000 through the Kevin Love Fund in support of the Cleveland Cavaliers arena and support staff that had a sudden life shift due to the suspension of the NBA season. I hope that during this time of crisis, others will join me in supporting our communities.

Pandemics are not just a medical phenomenon. They affect individuals and society on so many levels, with stigma and xenophobia being just two aspects of the impact of a pandemic outbreak. It's important to know that those with a mental illness may be vulnerable to the effects of widespread panic and threat. Be kind to one another. Be understanding of their fears, regardless if you don't feel the same. Be safe and make informed decisions during this time. And I encourage everyone to take care of themselves and to reach out to others in need -- whether that means supporting your local charities that are canceling events, or checking in on your colleagues and family.

I'd rather have Mr. Love for President than our current disgrace of moving protoplasm.

Heartwarming story: Stranger helps older couple in their 80's buy groceries while they stay safe

I went to the grocery store this afternoon. As I was walking in I heard a woman yell to me from her car. I walked over and found an elderly woman and her husband. She cracked her window open a bit more, and explained to me nearly in tears that they are afraid to go in the store.

Afraid to get sick as they are in their 80’s and hear that the novel coronavirus is affecting older people disproportionately. And that they don’t have family around to help them out. Through the crack in the window she handed me a $100 bill and a grocery list, and asked if I would be willing to buy her groceries.

I bought the groceries and placed them in her trunk, and gave her back the change. She told me she had been sitting in the car for nearly 45 min before I had arrived, waiting to ask the right person for help.

I know it’s a time of hysteria and nerves, but offer to help anyone you can. Not everyone has people to turn to.

interesting thread about *possible* impact of the coronavirus epidemic

Caveat: I'm not vouching for her numbers and assumptions but it's an interesting read nonetheless. 36 tweets

Under a Democratic president, McConnell vows a return to total obstruction

https://www.alternet.org/2020/03/under-a-democratic-president-mcconnell-vows-a-return-to-total-obstruction

If a Democrat wins the presidential election in November, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already promised what he’ll do.

“If I’m still the majority leader in the Senate think of me as the Grim Reaper. None of that stuff is going to pass,” McConnell said while speaking to community leaders in Owensboro, Ky.

McConnell noted that if Republicans win back the House or President Trump wins reelection “that takes care of it.” But he pledged that even if Republicans lose the White House, he would use his position as majority leader to block progressive proposals…

“I guarantee you that if I’m the last man standing and I’m still the majority leader, it ain’t happening. I can promise you,” McConnell added.

Bastard, no surprise.

Romney to vote for Burisma subpoena

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/486311-romney-to-vote-for-burisma-subpoena

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) will vote to subpoena a former consultant linked to Burisma Holdings, as part of a GOP probe into Hunter Biden and the Ukraine gas company.

Liz Johnson, a spokeswoman for Romney, said Friday that he would support the subpoena — which is expected to request documents and an interview with former Blue Star Strategies consultant Andrii Telizhenko — during Wednesday's committee meeting after getting assurances from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

“Senator Romney has expressed his concerns to Chairman Johnson, who has confirmed that any interview of the witness would occur in a closed setting without a hearing or public spectacle. He will therefore vote to let the Chairman proceed to obtain the documents that have been offered," Johnson said.

Romney's support means Johnson, who chairs the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is expected to have the simple majority on the panel needed to subpoena Telizhenko.

Damnit, Trump got to him.

Thank you thread for Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of NIAD and our national educator about coronavirus

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_S._Fauci

Anthony Stephen "Tony" Fauci (born December 24, 1940) is an American immunologist who has made substantial contributions to HIV/AIDS research and other immunodeficiencies, both as a scientist and as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

This guy is a legend and must be driving Trump totally nuts, because 1) he's a legend and 2) it would look really bad to fire him because he is making Trump look stupid and ignorant and corrupt.

I remember this man from back in the 80's, with the AIDS epidemic, always professional and correct about facts.
