Biohacking: The Creepy but Exciting Trend in Body Modification

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/biohacking-creepy-exciting-trend-body-modification/

“Sorry about the mess,” says Steve Haworth, as we walk down the stairs to the surgical theater in his basement. My friend Ted is visibly pale and sweating – for good reason. He’s about to get a sixth sense the hard way: by way of a scalpel, a needle and thread, and a tiny, gold-plated rare-earth magnet. Haworth is a body modification expert with a particular interest in what’s called “biohacking” – the practice of merging consumer technology and the human body to produce uniquely functional body modifications.

Haworth pioneered the procedure that Ted is about to undergo – the implantation of a rare earth magnet into the flesh of his ring finger. Haworth has several already installed in his own body, which he shows us as he moves his hand through the air next to his running can opener. Sure enough, you can feel the magnet twitch and jump in response to the electromagnetic field generated by the motor. It’s startling, and shows off exactly what you’re getting for your three hundred and fifty dollars: the ability to feel the shape and strength of electromagnetic fields in the world around you. Our host describes someone who had the procedure done, and was startled, when walking through New York City, to discover the powerful electromagnetic field produced by an electrical junction under the sidewalk.

It’s not just magnets, either. You can get a compass implant (called “SouthPaw“) that moves to alert you when you’re facing north. You can implant magnets in your ears and use a magnetic necklace to listen to music through your built-in speakers. Less ambitiously, you can get an RFID implant that unlocks your door, your phone, and your computer. Amal Graafstra, an implant enthusiast, uses his to open his safe, among other things:

We’re the first to put near field communication (NFC) compliant implants on the market like this. [...] There are 880 bytes of space, relative to 97 in the previous generation, so before you could keep a name and phone number, but now it has far greater capacity.

much more at link, interesting yet creepy.

ok, I joined WoW again and got the xpac upgrade too for November release

First world problems: I have to relearn everything all over again and stay inspired. I used to play with another DUer and quit (my apologies once again).

If I can stay inspired long enough, maybe I can link up with other DU'ers.

Wish me motivation. Have a great day.

Ginsburg: If I Resigned, Obama Couldn't Appoint 'Someone Like Me'

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ruth-bader-ginsburg-elle-magazine-replacement

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has a message for progressives who want her to retire under President Barack Obama: That ain't happening, and even if I did, my replacement would be nothing like me.

The leader of the Supreme Court's liberal wing told Elle magazine that if she did so, Obama would not be able to secure Senate approval for "anyone I would like to see in the court."

Here's a snippet from that interview:

I’m not sure how to ask this, but a lot of people who admire and respect you wonder if you’ll resign while President Obama is in office.

Who do you think President Obama could appoint at this very day, given the boundaries that we have? If I resign any time this year, he could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court. [The Senate] took off the filibuster for lower federal court appointments, but it remains for this court. So anybody who thinks that if I step down, Obama could appoint someone like me, they’re misguided. As long as I can do the job full steam…. I think I’ll recognize when the time comes that I can’t any longer. But now I can.

Girl With Three Boobs a Fake?! Everything to Know About Jasmine Tridevil's Elaborate Hoax

http://www.eonline.com/news/582050/girl-with-three-boobs-a-fake-everything-to-know-about-jasmine-tridevil-s-elaborate-hoax

This is exactly why people have trust issues.

Just yesterday, the world was introduced to the shocking and controversial Jasmine Tridevil, a 21-year-old licensed massage therapist who claimed to have undergone a $20,000 plastic surgery procedure to add a third breast to her body so that she would become "unattractive to men"—and maybe score herself an MTV reality show.

Well, now we find out that three-boob girl is a fake, and her entire story is a hoax. However, the real story behind everything is still a doozy.

Snopes.com took a deeper look at Tridevil's claims, only to find out that all evidence points to her fooling everyone.

PLEASE help the Democrat FIRED for running for office in FL (donate, comment & keep kicked)

PLEASE help the Democrat FIRED for running for office in FL (donate, comment & keep kicked)

Viviana Janer is an amazing woman running for County Commission in Osceola County which is just south of Orlando. She worked for the Marriott time-share company for ELEVEN YEARS until she decided to run for office when they fired her. Why did they fire her? Because they are supporters of her opponent John Quiñones, who is a darling of big business special interests.

With $60,475 in his campaign fund Quiñones has a huge fundraising advantage over Janer's $18,345, who now has to deal with losing her job. Meanwhile Marriott stroked a $1000 check to the opponent. THIS IS WRONG.

So PLEASE DU -- this is super important. You can make a difference for this Democrat. Take a moment to donate just a few bucks to her campaign, or at least leave a message of support on her website.

ICYMI, here's the story:

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-osceola-commission-candidate-fired-20140921-story.html

Osceola Commission candidate fired after refusing to quit campaign

Viviana Janer is a Democratic nominee campaigning for a seat on the Osceola County Commission. She's also newly jobless.

Her longtime employer, Marriott Vacations Worldwide, fired her after giving her an ultimatum: Quit the campaign or lose your job.

Janer, a Democrat and first-time candidate for office, won the Aug. 26 Democratic primary for District 2 with 79 percent of the vote. She will face incumbent Republican Commissioner John Quiñones in the general election on Nov. 4.

But the time-share company where she had worked for 11 years dismissed her Friday, saying her candidacy and possible service on the commission created a conflict of interest. Janer was given the choice of leaving the campaign or resigning. She declined to do either and was fired.

(snip)

According to campaign-finance reports, Marriott International gave $1,000 to Quiñones' campaign in March. Marriott International spun off Marriott Worldwide Vacations in 2011.

Fort Lauderdale Targets Homeless Population, Outlaws Sleeping In Public And Panhandling

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/23/fort-lauderdale-homelessness-ban_n_5869380.html

Casey Cooper believes he should be able to lay his head to rest in public. But the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, thinks otherwise.

Cooper is one of the city's homeless that will be affected by a local ban on sleeping outside -- an ordinance passed last week that prohibits "camping" within the downtown limits. An individual who violates the ordinance faces a $500 fine and 60 days in jail, the Sun Sentinel reported.

"I have to worry about where I’m going to sleep at, where’s the next meal at, how am I going to get the next piece of clothing, worry if the cops are going to mess with me, and you’re going to try to pass a law that’s ... going to ban homelessness?" Cooper asked city commissioners during a public meeting to discuss the measure, according to Think Progress. "Sleep is a human right."

A separate ordinance, also passed last week, bans panhandling at intersections of public streets. The law also bars those trying to raise funds for charitable causes. Those who violate the ordinance face a potential $500 fine and 60 days in jail as well.

Sigh, so not right.
