Karma: a poll

I believe in it. I can't prove it. Just a simple poll, that's all, not trying to troll. My track record is good.

ETA: I don't believe in reincarnation. I don't believe in blaming decent people and children for horrible things that happen. I guess I believe in a more forward-looking karma (do good and good eventually comes back to you, do bad and eventually bad comes back to you, etc ).

ETA2: Karma's obviously the wrong word for what I believe in. Definitely logical consequences, with liberal Christianity thrown in I guess. That puts me at odds with over half of DU, and I'm cool with that.

Univision fires anchor for racist Michelle Obama insult

Univision has sacked a talk show host who likened First Lady Michelle Obama to characters in the movie "Planet of the Apes."

The Spanish-language network announced that Rodner Figueroa, an Emmy Award-winning host and presenter, had been fired for the remarks he made on Wednesday.

"Yesterday during our entertainment program 'El Gordo y La Flaca' Rodner Figueroa made comments regarding First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect Univision's values or views," Univision said in a statement. "As a result, Mr. Figueroa was immediately terminated."

In a broadcast on Wednesday, Figueroa said, "Michelle Obama looks like she's part of the cast of 'Planet of the Apes.'" Figueroa made the comments as a photo of the first lady was shown on screen.

Holy shit, racist as hell and dumb to boot!

Don Lemon, the Klan, and fairness in the media

There's a thread in GD about Don Lemon of CNN interviewing a Klansman on the OU situation. I think we can all agree that the Klan is about as far right as you can go, vying with the neo-nazis.

Fairness: Why don't CNN and the other media outlets ever interview Marxists ? I think we all know the reason. Far right is ok. Marxists are not. Liberal media my ass.

Video streaming app Meerkat seems ridiculous. But so did Twitter.

There's a new social media fad that's going crazy on Twitter — people have started linking to a service called Meerkat. If you click these links fast enough, it will take you to a live video stream — probably of your friend doing something mundane like walking down the street or eating lunch.

Meerkat has attracted tens of thousands of users in just a couple of weeks. And it seems silly. But most social media startups seemed silly when they were founded. Instagram seemed frivolous. Twitter seemed downright ludicrous.

There have also been plenty of social startups that seemed silly and were silly — think of Yo or Ello. We don't know yet if Meerkat will be a big hit or a one-hit wonder.

Meerkat lets people broadcast live from their phones

To use Meerkat, you need two things: an iPhone and a Twitter account. You download the Meerkat app to your iPhone, enter your Twitter credentials, and can then start broadcasting live video with a few taps. (Right now, it's for iOS only, but an Android app is in the works.)

Madonna has said that women are “still the most marginalised group” in society.

In an interview with Out magazine, Madonna echoed Patricia Arquette’s recent Oscars acceptance speech by claiming that women were failing to make the same progress as gay people and African Americans.

She said: “Gay rights are way more advanced than women’s rights. People are a lot more open-minded to the gay community than they are to women, period.”

The Rebel Heart singer added: “It’s moved along for the gay community, for the African-American community, but women are still just trading on their ass. To me, the last great frontier is women.”
