Crunchy Frog
Crunchy Frog's JournalThe real fascists mostly aren't on the streets.
They're in the White House and Congress and state legislatures. They're on the judge's benches and in the corporate boardrooms, in ICE and other law enforcement, in the think tanks and the RW propaganda apparatus, and too many other places to name.
Anyone who thinks that beating up some punks in the streets and destroying property is even going to touch the real fascists is incredibly naive or living in a fantasy world.
That's JMHO.
There's no evidence that there was any political motivation
On the part of the Dayton shooter, and to suggest that there was is to play in to the RW narrative.
Everything I've read about him describes him as someone with a long term fascination with guns, violence, and mass shootings. He had stated on previous occasions a desire to kill people, and was expelled from school for maintaining "hit" lists and rape lists.
The El Paso shooter demonstrated clear political motives, repeating the kind of rhetoric that Trump uses about Mexicans, and even writing a "manifesto".
Let's not take "both siderism" too far, especially not when it favors an incorrect RW narrative.
And why is it that Trump, or anyone else, has the right to expect members of Congress
To display fealty to any foreign country? Why should they have any kind of allegiance to Israel, or any other country besides the United States?
Isn't this the question that got Ilhan Omar into so much hot water for asking a few months ago? I think she had a valid point.
I may be the only one, but I agree with you.
I don't agree that the Betsy Ross flag is inherently a hate symbol, or that it stands for racism and slavery.
The only reason it would become such is that we surrender it to the right wing, and I, personally, have no intention of doing that. I don't think we should concede the Gadsden flag either.
I think that Nike made an appallingly bad decision to put the flag on a shoe in the first place, but the way they've handled the aftermath has been even worse.
They've basically handed the RW red meat on a silver platter, and they are going to milk it for all it's worth, and benefit from it politically.
From some of the accusations flying around here lately, I'm as good as advocating waving a swastika around or burning a cross on somebody's lawn, but no, I don't think we should just surrender our national symbols to a bunch of fascists.
Rant over, and waiting for the accusations.
If we don't impose limits on him now through the impeachment process,
then, even if we vote him out next election, good luck with the next R president, or R controlled House or Senate. The R's will know for certain that they can get away with ANYTHING, and that NO ONE will even bother with trying to impose any limits on them. We will have one large, powerful party that knows it doesn't live under the rule of law, and will be operating without breaks.
Call me crazy, but I don't think that would be a healthy thing for our country or our democracy.
I think that's what the Repugs want. For mass shootings to just be part of the new normal.
Are they just trying to get us conditioned to high levels of mass violence? Are they trying to get us all desensitized? Is this part of their larger agenda for the country?
I can feel myself becoming more desensitized too.
So, it looks like there was just a mass shooting with 12 fatalities, and it's barely noticeable here
on DU.
I've scrolled over the whole front page, and just a handfull of threads with just a few replies.
I guess maybe we're heading into a society where mass shootings, even with fatalities in double digits, just aren't really noteworthy anymore unless there are other extenuating conditions (houses of worship, children, etc.)
Is this a real trend, or am I full of it?
Sub-Saharan Africans don't show evidence of interbreeding with Neanderthals or Denisovans, but
they do show evidence of interbreeding with other lineages of archaic humans.
That means that we are ALL mutts, and we are all products of interbreeding with our more archaic cousins. Genetically speaking, none of us are "more" or "less" or superior or inferior. It's silly and dangerous to try to classify contemporary humans in that fashion. JMHO.
Amber Guyger, when the National Review is calling you out, you're probably in deep shit.
https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/09/amber-guyger-botham-jean-shooting-police-must-face-impartial-justice/Really surprised at some of the stuff they're saying.
First, police sources are reportedly indicating that Guyger may actually try to raise the fact that Jean didnt obey her commands as a defense. Its not a defense. The moment she opened the door to an apartment that wasnt her own, she wasnt operating as a police officer clothed with the authority of the law. She was instead a criminal. She was breaking into another persons home. She was an armed home invader, and the person clothed with the authority of law to defend himself was Botham Shem Jean.
Which brings us to the second troubling element of the story. So far, Guyger is only charged with manslaughter. But all the available evidence indicates that she intentionally shot Jean. This wasnt a warning shot gone awry. The pistol didnt discharge during a struggle. She committed a crime by forcing open Jeans door, deliberately took aim, and killed him.
Texas law defines murder quite simply as intentionally or knowingly caus[ing] the death of an individual. Manslaughter, by contrast, occurs when a person recklessly causes death. Guygers warning and her deliberate aim scream intent.
Not defending the NR here, and of course they always have a hidden agenda, but I still found it pretty remarkable that they're suggesting that she committed actual murder rather than manslaughter, and calling her out on her attempts to use victim blaming as her defense.
I'm hoping that this case has gotten so high profile that they won't have a choice about rendering real justice.
LOL. Reminds me of this video.
