So, it looks like there was just a mass shooting with 12 fatalities, and it's barely noticeable here

on DU.

I've scrolled over the whole front page, and just a handfull of threads with just a few replies.

I guess maybe we're heading into a society where mass shootings, even with fatalities in double digits, just aren't really noteworthy anymore unless there are other extenuating conditions (houses of worship, children, etc.)

Is this a real trend, or am I full of it?

DU loves to react to things in real time as people speculate and update information, and the shooting happened when many of us were asleep or otherwise offline. Reacting to a story that is essentially finished looks different on a website like DU.

I am sure it will be in big discussion on tonights news and regarding gun shootings in America and the DU will be all over it.

I wouldn't read too much into this - we are in a fast news cycle with so much going on in last 72 hours and it will be discussed, just like everything else.

Sadly, we live in a time where there is just so much massive shit news....its all so hard to process and to have 100 discussions all at once that seem to give adequate time to any of the topics.

The relative share of discussion each piece of news receives is subjective, and in many cases, not at all indicative of concern or interest.

The shooting was late on the west coast. Most everyone was asleep after several long days and nights. Other than the basic details, almost nothing new was being reported from CA until around 8:00 am PST.

Given all that, there seem a fair number of posts on an extremely busy news day.

What absolutely left me gasping, is the report that some of those present (and possibly victims) of Thousand Oaks, had experienced the Las Vegas shooting. Good gawd.

He could be an incel who struck out at the bar and hates "Brad" and "Stacy".

He could be insane and heard voices.

He could be a gay guy mad at straight rednecks.

He could be a dishonorable discharge with PTSD and a drug problem.

He could be Muslim on jihad.

He could be Christian who hated dancing.

Probably not a Jew (but you never know, remember Son of Sam, anyone?).

He could be a Republican mad about the House flipping.

He could be a Democrat mad about the Repugs getting a solid Senate.

He could be like the asshole in Vegas that gives us zero clue.

We have literally nothing to go on right now. Just hang out a bit.

Even when we are outraged it only lasts a few days.

I hate to say it but mass shootings are the new normal. The other day I was reading a follow up about a mass shooting and I had to google it because I thought “which one was this again?”

Fucking disgusting.

Are they just trying to get us conditioned to high levels of mass violence? Are they trying to get us all desensitized? Is this part of their larger agenda for the country?

I can feel myself becoming more desensitized too.

on an almost continual basis--spurred on by these never-ceasing incidents. I surely don't think that signals a decrease in interest in gun control, just not the need to post in a less visible forum.

I support rigorous screening of any potential gun owner.

I think assualt weapons should not be in the hands of mentally ill people or people that have a track record of violence. Farther, no person that has mental illness or violence issues should even be allowed to own ANY gun, the guy in California used a 45 caliber and killed 12 human beings.
