So, it looks like there was just a mass shooting with 12 fatalities, and it's barely noticeable here

on DU.

I've scrolled over the whole front page, and just a handfull of threads with just a few replies.

I guess maybe we're heading into a society where mass shootings, even with fatalities in double digits, just aren't really noteworthy anymore unless there are other extenuating conditions (houses of worship, children, etc.)

Is this a real trend, or am I full of it?

1. I think a lot of it has to do with the timing of it.

DU loves to react to things in real time as people speculate and update information, and the shooting happened when many of us were asleep or otherwise offline. Reacting to a story that is essentially finished looks different on a website like DU.

7. Correct.

Also mid-terms, Sessions/Mueller, RBG, Acosta...all within 48 hours. Too much to concentrate on just one awful thing 😕

2. Information is still coming in...

I am sure it will be in big discussion on tonights news and regarding gun shootings in America and the DU will be all over it.

I wouldn't read too much into this - we are in a fast news cycle with so much going on in last 72 hours and it will be discussed, just like everything else.

Sadly, we live in a time where there is just so much massive shit news....its all so hard to process and to have 100 discussions all at once that seem to give adequate time to any of the topics.

3. There were multiple posts last night at around 11 P.M. PST. However, I agree, I would think there

would have been more follow through today on this

4. A mid-term, an AG being fired, and a mass-shooting.

The relative share of discussion each piece of news receives is subjective, and in many cases, not at all indicative of concern or interest.

5. Probably mostly just time if day

The shooting was late on the west coast. Most everyone was asleep after several long days and nights. Other than the basic details, almost nothing new was being reported from CA until around 8:00 am PST.

Given all that, there seem a fair number of posts on an extremely busy news day.

6. Kids shot up in CT

Nothing was done. My sympathies for the families of the deceased, but my outrage does no good, probably. I want to be wrong about my pessimism.

8. I'd say we are overloaded and numb. That hardly means we don't care.

What absolutely left me gasping, is the report that some of those present (and possibly victims) of Thousand Oaks, had experienced the Las Vegas shooting. Good gawd.

9. Well, so far there is zero information

He could be an incel who struck out at the bar and hates "Brad" and "Stacy".

He could be insane and heard voices.

He could be a gay guy mad at straight rednecks.

He could be a dishonorable discharge with PTSD and a drug problem.

He could be Muslim on jihad.

He could be Christian who hated dancing.

Probably not a Jew (but you never know, remember Son of Sam, anyone?).

He could be a Republican mad about the House flipping.

He could be a Democrat mad about the Repugs getting a solid Senate.

He could be like the asshole in Vegas that gives us zero clue.

We have literally nothing to go on right now. Just hang out a bit.

but didn't realize that they were from a RW university.

I literally only just found out about this.

11. I've been thinking the same thing.

Even when we are outraged it only lasts a few days.

I hate to say it but mass shootings are the new normal. The other day I was reading a follow up about a mass shooting and I had to google it because I thought “which one was this again?”

Fucking disgusting.

15. I think that's what the Repugs want. For mass shootings to just be part of the new normal.

Are they just trying to get us conditioned to high levels of mass violence? Are they trying to get us all desensitized? Is this part of their larger agenda for the country?

I can feel myself becoming more desensitized too.

12. I think that's the real trend here.

I was thinking about writing an OP about how interest in mass shootings has dropped here at DU unless, like you say, it involves "other extenuating conditions (houses of worship, children, etc.) ".

16. One thing I've noticed lately, is little discussion among our PRO-GUN (Gun Control & RKBA (Group)

i.e., the group long colloquially known as the "GUNGEON". Is that because their group posts are no longer highlighted on the "LATEST" posts page?

Just curious.... I'd like to think maybe they are feeling the need to "rethink" a bit....??

17. And the Gun Control Reform Activism group is almost dead.

Which leads one to believe that the gun issue isn't as important here anymore.

18. I think your point is explained more by the fact that gun control issues are discussed in GD

on an almost continual basis--spurred on by these never-ceasing incidents. I surely don't think that signals a decrease in interest in gun control, just not the need to post in a less visible forum.

20. But the OP is making the arguement that even in GD, mass shootings don't get the attention...

they once did. I agree with the OP that that does appear to be the case.

Look at the responses to this OP:

19. I started a thread on it at 6:22 am. There was no info at that time other than the # of fatalities

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211392317

I think my comment there pretty much sums it up. What more is there to say?

21. Okay, stop everything and look at the bodies. Mueller, who's that? Trump's military stunt? Nah.

Look, godsdammit. I hate this. America is a drooling idiot when it comes to guns. What the hell is wrong with us?

I am just numb by now. But while cable news decides whether or not to run this 24/7 for the next several days -- Trump/Hitler is not taking a break.

22. Or maybe you can try proposing solutions.

I support rigorous screening of any potential gun owner.

I think assualt weapons should not be in the hands of mentally ill people or people that have a track record of violence. Farther, no person that has mental illness or violence issues should even be allowed to own ANY gun, the guy in California used a 45 caliber and killed 12 human beings.
