IMHO, we'd better start learning to pronounce Jake Auchincloss's name. This young Democratic
Rep. from Massachusetts is a "keeper" and if I live long enough, I think I will see him as a national leader of our party and nation.
Today's Republican "party" is truly "all hat and no cattle"; "a mile wide and an inch deep".
They deal almost exclusively in appearances. What they now term "creating counter-narratives" used to be called lying and they consider "facts" to be whatever spews out whenever they decide to pontificate about a subject.
In their world, racism either no longer exists or can be erased by simply denying it. Any policy or speech that does not feature the use of the "n-word" cannot possibly be racist according to their "reasoning".
They insist that their proposed laws be judged solely by their titles, not by what they actually do. Laws that allow Big Money's corporations to pump poison into our air and water are totally ok if named something like "the Clean Our Environment Act". Laws that drastically suppress the votes of "those people" and clearly favor the GOP are fine and dandy as long as they are termed "Protect Democracy" acts.
"The Man Behind The Curtain" no longer bothers to even pretend to be a wizard. He and his cultists now brazenly stand before us and, in effect, say "Yeah, there's no 'there'
there---so what? We've got ours and you're all losers!"
Is not this the definition of "obscenely surreal"?
If it is ok to require you to wear a seatbelt in your own car, drive on the right side of the
highway, wear a helmet on your motorcycle and vaccinate Rover against rabies, why would it not be ok to REQUIRE covid vaccinations as soon as one is fully approved by the FDA?
Most public school systems have required that kids be vaccinated for mumps, measles, chickenpox and whooping cough for years. Covid is deadlier than any of those.
I wonder if some here might be familiar with a concept referred to as the "veil of ignorance".
It is basically a thought experiment devised by philosopher John Rawls and proposes a method for adopting laws to form a society striving to be fair, equal and moral.
In deciding what rules would govern this society, we are asked to assume that we are totally ignorant of our personal situation or condition. Imagine a speck of consciousness yet to be born---we don't yet know our gender, the color of our skin, our physical or mental health, our size or shape, our sexual orientation, our intelligence or our appearance. We have no idea what sort of community we will live in or how wealthy or impoverished our family may be.
Not knowing what sort of person we would be, would we not be more inclined to pass laws that would treat ALL people equally well? Would not the Golden Rule---"treat others as you would like to be treated"---be seen as the only real "law" necessary?
Educate me, please. What can the January 6th Committee do about it if witnesses defy
its subpoenas?
Can such "defiers" be arrested and brought before the Committee "in custody"? If so, who would do this?

After enlarging the photo of Flynn and The Pillow Man's White board posted here and elsewhere and
reading the psychotic stream-of-consciousness drivel scrawled on it, I would give odds that if an autopsy is ever performed on those two, the doc will find their skulls full of slithering worms.
"WANTED: five current Republicans to sit on the January 6th Committee. Experienced poop-flingers
preferred. Trump tattoos a plus. Those with even a vestigial sense of shame need not apply.
Contact Kev ASAP if you are willing to totally debase yourself by interrupting Committee proceedings often to loudly insist that "Trump won!"
So, McCarthy now wants to appoint 5 Republicans to the January 6th Committee who will
create a "counter-narrative" to the Committee's findings. I have one simple and very obvious question.
How in hell do you know you will need to "counter" what the Committee uncovers and reports?
By taking that approach IN ADVANCE, are you not conceding that the unvarnished truth will tarnish your party---probably for decades?
Some are musing that it is just possible McCarthy will appoint reasonable people to the January 6th
Committee.
These are the same folks who waited 4 years for Trump to "pivot" and "act presidential".
There is a difference between being optimistic and being unrealistic.
Serious question: Does the House even HAVE 5 "reasonable" Republicans?
