Quote for the Day:

For the invasion of Russia in 1812 Napoleon produced the largest army that had ever marched. Probably some 450,000 men under his command crossed the Nieman in June 1812. Tsar Alexander could muster only 160,000 to oppose him. If the Russians were not to lose, they would have to retreat. If the French were to win, they would have to catch up with the enemy first. The kind of campaign that would be fought was determined before any shots were fired. Napoleon would have known what had happened to the last military genius who had invaded the country: King Charles XII of Sweden had marched and marched until he was caught and pummeled at Pultava. Napoleon was sure that he had prepared with sufficient care.
