(1,473 posts)That's why the treasonweasel had rage tweeting fits that day.
It really is as simple as this: Magnitsky/sanctions means that Putin cannot protect his fellow thugs. That's why voting for sanctions, and in particular, voting that sanctions can only be lifted by Congress after review, is so important.
https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029388754
At this point, I think the leaders of Congress have enough intelligence reports that they decided to remove this power from Trump. Trump could have selectively lifted sanctions. If this passes and is signed, he won't be able to.

(1,473 posts)I think we need to be prepared.
The alt-right will burn everything down, thinking that the fire won't touch them. The alt- Left will watch it burn, thinking that it will usher in a new era of freedom where their ideology will reign supreme.
We need to come together. There's no other way. Put aside the purity tests and find people who are willing to defend the Constitution from the attack that is coming.

(9,974 posts)Buried in the hearing was how drumf could single handedly REMOVE institutions/people from the list that banks around the world go by when they deal with people/companies.
If they are on that no use list then, per the hearing, no $ institution in the WORLD will do business with them. Drumf may not be able to repeal the whole act but he has a loophole of taking people/companies OFF that list. Major loophole. The Dem congressman said they are working to fix that loophole but how many have been quietly removed since Jan 20? Can the committee get a pre and post Jan 20 list to compare them to see if any were removed by drumf behind the scenes?
Also, the law firm mentioned by Grassley in the hearing..Baker/Hostetler. Both the Russian lawyer and the hacking/money laundering guy worked thru them as clients in articles I've read. Are there any actions being taken to pin down what companies/firms are actively acting as go betweens.
Of course, law firms can claim client privacy and privileges but will that stand up with FARA investigations? If companies are found out as being go betweens can THEY be put on a list similar to the current Magnitsky list so no financial institutions will work with them?
You have to wonder how many pols have benefited from the lobbyists who work with the companies acting as Russian agent fronts and do those pols really want to risk losing $, etc... will they enact anything laws with actual teeth to eliminate this shit?

(9,974 posts)Things I've found by Googling. Once you start, it's like you are going down one rabbit hole that leads to another and another.
Notice how intertwined the Russian agents are within the Repub party. Right down to the Trump Florida campaign chair and her husband AND their daughter who managed to get a job at the WH until she was booted out for a failed background check. The husband worked for the Russian hacker/money laundering guy thru a law firm. The wife played a role in the RNC platform/rules (did that effect the anti-Ukraine stand in the platform?) How the hell were the wife and daughter able to get in those positions when the husband had financial ties to the Russian hacker/money laundering guy?
You'll see the same law firm mentioned as the go between for at least 2 of the meeting attendees and lobbyists, etc...
The Repub party needs to just dismantle itself and start anew..too many roads lead right back to the Russian agenda/agents. I image a lot of money goes along with these connections/deals.
https://www.reddit.com/r/RussiaLago/comments/6nmphb/trump_campaign_chair_has_close_ties_to/
Susan Wiles was Trump's Florida campaign chair. Her husband Lanny is a pro-Russia lobbyist. Their daughter Caroline works in the White House. We learned last night that Lanny was the one who got Veselnitskaya her seat at the Congressional hearing. That's not all:
Lanny has been accused of illegally lobbying on behalf of Russia, without registering as a foreign agent. He was actually working for Akhmetshin, but was paid through the law firm BakerHostetler as a cut-out.
Susie Wiles is a former lobbyist and Trump's Florida campaign co-chair. She is a longtime friend of Paul Manafort's.
Susie Wiles was on the RNC's Rules Committee, and her co-chair Joe Gruters was on the RNC Platform Committee. They were in a position to weaken the RNC's Ukraine stance.
Their daughter, Caroline, failed her background check; however, she apparently still works in the White House.
Given that Lanny was guilty of a FARA violation and Akhmetshin knew about it, one must assume that the Russians had tremendous leverage over the entire family.
http://www.politico.com/tipsheets/politico-influence/2016/12/fara-complaint-alleges-pro-russian-lobbying-217776
Akhmetshin recruited Lanny Wiles, a McCain campaign hand who has known Rohrabacher since their Reagan days. Wiles said he told Akhmetshin he didn't want to work for a foreign entity, which would require registering under FARA. Akhmetshin told Wiles he wouldn't have to register because he would be working for the law firm BakerHostetler, according to Wiles. Wiles said Akhmetshin paid him but not in full. Akhmetshin denied paying him.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/donald-trump-administration/2017/02/white-house-failed-background-checks-dismissals-235112
Among those who won't be working at the White House was President Donald Trumps director of scheduling, Caroline Wiles, the daughter of Susan Wiles, Trumps Florida campaign director and former campaign manager for Governor Rick Scott. Wiles, who resigned Friday before the background check was completed, was appointed deputy assistant secretary before the inauguration in January. Two sources close to Wiles said she will get another job in Treasury.

In June, after visiting Trump Tower in New York, Veselnitskaya came to Washington to lend a hand in the lobbying effort
She attended a meeting of the team at the downtown offices of Cozen OConnor, where she spoke at length in Russian about the issues but confused many in the room, who had not been told previously about her involvement, according to several participants.

Asked to comment on the allegations in the Grassley letter, Fusion GPS said in an e-mail to RFE/RL: "Fusion GPS was working for the U.S. law firm of Baker Hostetler, at its direction, in a litigation support role. That work is a matter of public record. By the very nature of that work, Fusion GPS was working with a law firm to ensure compliance with the law. Fusion GPS was not required to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act."
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/07/bill-browders-testimony-to-the-senate-judiciary-committee/534864/?utm_source=atlfb
Veselnitskaya also instructed U.S. law firm Baker Hostetler and their Washington, D.C.-based partner Marc Cymrot to lobby members of Congress to support an amendment taking Sergei Magnitskys name off the Global Magnitsky Act. Mr. Cymrot was in contact with Paul Behrends, a congressional staffer on the House Foreign Affairs Committee at the time, as part of the anti-Magnitsky lobbying campaign.

(9,974 posts)How is it that a person can be both a one time Putin PR guy AND then end up as a US Presidential campaign media guy??
http://buffalonews.com/2016/03/05/the-radical-adventures-of-conservative-radio-host-mike-caputo/
He co-founded Rainmaker, a PR firm for budding telecom and Internet companies based in Washington, D.C., but also worked for Russians on this side of the Atlantic. He helped President Vladimir Putin weather U.S. government criticism for taking over an independent TV station.
Im not proud of the work today, he said. But at the time, Putin wasnt such a bad guy.
(Snip)
Though Caputo says he is a proud American, he owes the U.S. government more than $100,000 in back taxes and penalties and has multiple liens against him. He paid off his back state taxes last year.
--------
Caputo was brought onto help with the campaign by Paladino
http://buffalonews.com/2016/07/20/paladino-caputo-convention-one-man-one-man/
Carl Paladino and Michael Caputo are tied by history, friendship and politics. When Paladino ran for New York State governor in 2010, Caputo was his campaign manager and PR man. When Paladino signed on to help organize statewide support for Trump's presidential campaign, he asked Caputo to help.
Now both men are working the Republican National Convention this week. But they bring different emotional energy to the job.
(snip)
As for Caputo, Paladino said he's had many conversations with him at the convention and recognizes that Caputo's feeling conflicted about being there. But Trump is a loyal man, Paladino said, and the last thing he wanted to do was let Lewandowski go. When Caputo stomped on the man in social media after he was fired, there were bound to be consequences.
"It was just bad timing by Mike," Paladino said. "He should have known better."
---------------
And how does does he go from "only meeting Putin twice" to Putin being at his house for a party to serving on a St. Petersburg Russian committee with Putin and then becoming Putin's PR person (See 1st link above) and then becoming part of Trump world.
http://www.twcnews.com/nys/buffalo/politics/2017/03/20/michael-caputo-jackie-speier-putin-trump.html
While hosting a Conservative talk show on WBEN in 2014 Caputo said he had met Putin twice, first when they were on a panel together in 1994 in Saint Petersburg, Russia and again later at a party in Caputo's home.
"I didn't know he was there until I saw the photographs a year later and he was there leaning against the wall in my living room sipping from ice water which I think runs in his veins."
Caputo said then, his interactions with Putin were very brief and he did not trust him.
---------------
He is now whining that no one from the Trump clan is paying HIS lawyer fees. Poor baby.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker/flynn-caputo-struggle-legal-bills-russia-probe
Former campaign aide Michael Caputo is also having trouble paying former New York state attorney general Dennis Vacco to represent him in congressional probes, he told the Associated Press this week. Noting with irritation that the Trump campaign was footing the legal bill for Donald Trump, Jr., who met with a Kremlin-linked lawyer and others with ties to Russia at Trump Tower last year, Caputo told the AP he was using his childrens college funds to cover his own legal bills.
Lucky for them, Caputo said of those whose legal fees were covered by the campaign. And unlucky for me. And unlucky for my children who are now going to community college.

States of Emergency suspend things like elections or transitions of power and open up more options for drastic militarism. The time to declare one is before someone like Trump takes office.

(9,974 posts)Back in his letter to the Feds in July *2016*. One month after the June 2016 Jr Russia meeting. From the Russia lawyer to the Russian hacking/money laundering guy's name. Grassley forwarded it to Boener and a bunch of others on March 31. So the repubs have known for 4 months about the Russian names/activities...
MOST importantly, Browder brought to light how Russian agents use go between companies..they become clients of these companies (i.e. Law firms) who then have their lobbyists interact/pay politicians who can bypass the whole FARA law/paperwork because, hey, they are not dealing directly with the Russian agents. I imagine THAT got some pols squirming in their seats.
I saw one news blip where one of the guys on the committee made a comment about how the lobbying in DC needs to be looked at given the whole Russian agent thing. UH...how about they go after the REPUB politicians who knowingly deal with the lobbyists/companies who are really fronts for the Russian agents?
Scroll down to page 7 of this huge 108 page link..it has Browder's letter to the Feds from July 2016. Several of those who attended the Jr meeting are named and since Browder couldn't have known about the meeting when he wrote that letter back in 2016 it's too much of a damn coincidence that he names the people in that meeting....how they went to D.C. days after the meeting, who they met with there, which DC folks went to the pro Russia propaganda film screening there...he busted it wide open. I haven't watched the testimony yet d/t work hours so thank you for the link.
I don't know how much he was able to share in the testimony given he probably wasn't given the time he needed but his initial letter lays it out very clearly and names a lot of names. That aide to Rohrabacher who was recently fired from the House Foreign Relation Commitee because of Russian connections he was named in the letter, too. He went to the film screening in DC.

Hopefully those Congress critters already know about all the connections cuz it would be a scary as hell if a random person like me just Googling were to know more. I imagine the repubs do know this stuff seeing as how it's happening under their frigging noses in their own party...but if they are benefiting financially/politically from it all they sure as hell aren't gonna speak up!
