"24 business hours"

I strongly suspect that Karl Rove to be indicted from TruthOut was due to an insider to deceive and give the impression it was about to happen to ridicule them for not turning to be accurate. I have a feeling anyway.

Karl Rove Indicted on Charges of Perjury, Lying to Investigators

By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Report
Saturday 13 May 2006

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than half a day Friday at the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm representing Karl Rove.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 business hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

I told them it was nonsense as soon as I read Leopold's story.

Why it's being brought up now is a mystery to me, but at the time it was hilarious. It really was a symptom of how desperate people were for a solution to Bush. "Fitz" was going to save them. It was a childish belief with childish proponents.

...the story itself. But many (not including you, of course) seem to be attempting to disprove the Leopold story by assassinating the characters of both Pitt and Leopold (by bringing up Jason's former drug problem & Pitt's drunken rant from the other night).

That's all I meant.

Mon Jul 27, 2015, 03:54 PM

That's utterly beside the point. The story wasn't an opinion column speculating that Rove was involved. Everybody knew Rove outed Plame, deliberately and as revenge. It was non-controversial.

The story stated (and Truthout editors subsequently insisted) that an actual event of indictment had occurred on May 12, 2006. That turned out to be false. Indeed, Rove never was indicted. The whole story was malarkey. But they claimed it was multiply sourced and fact checked to death. And we never received an explanation of what happened.

That's a separate question from whether anybody believed that Rove was involved in the Plame affair. Only an idiot would suggest he *wasn't* involved.

That was back when I was KeysDisease, not long before I left DU for many a year. Dubya had destroyed my nervous system; I was severely depressed. Will told me to take some time, get my head straight, come back when I knew I had healed. I appreciated the advice. Maybe he'll follow it himself, but I don't know. DU is so very different these days. There are many kind and good souls who come here because of a strong social conscience and a desire to improve this world. Sadly, they attract people from a darker side of the world who only derive their pleasure from destruction.

Take care, Will.

I wouldn't go that far. In any case, from reading comments here and elsewhere, I suppose I'm now in the group "Despicable, asshole, dickish, bully, creepy, jealous, stalker." O how I've fallen! Just kidding. I was always this way.

Reading DU today is like...

Jeez! The wailing and gnashing of teeth.

As I said upthread, I have no idea why this came back up, and the OP hasn't returned to clarify. I didn't bring it up. I have in the past, though. I also have brought up another poster who disappeared rather than own up to a bet on a certain national championship college football game, ahem. Whatever, right?

The poster being "grieved" (I mean, seriously?) is as close as DU gets to a public figure, and it's just the case that people are gonna goof on a public figure from time to time, especially if that public figure a) is deliberately controversial and b) has stepped in his own dogshit occasionally, as in the 24 business hour stuff. The drama and moaning (Despicable! Assholes!) over it is very high school, but not particularly interesting.

Anyway, y'all enjoy. Dude that left will be back. I have a running offer of 260 on the over/under for the recs his "I'm Back, Fuck the Haters!" thread will receive. The group therapy session will continue downthread.

is that the Truthout/Pitt/Leopold crew lied, and made up the story, hoping that an indictment was in fact inevitable and that their lie would later be backed up by events. There was no indictment, they made a bad bet, pretty simple.

24 business hours? Are you really still defending that nonsense? They didn't need a conspiracy theory to be made to look like fools.

who clarified something for me that is pretty damned important. In his article, he said:

"During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning."

In point of fact, those 24 hours are "business hours," i.e. starting on Monday.

During the course of that meeting, Fitzgerald served attorneys for former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove with an indictment charging the embattled White House official with perjury and lying to investigators related to his role in the CIA leak case, and instructed one of the attorneys to tell Rove that he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order, high level sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said Saturday morning.

That's a rare thing. A person who is always right and always posts the truth.

Wish I could claim that honor.

Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody gets fooled sometimes. Takes a real nasty person to revel in a mistake made years ago by someone who is basically a reliable, good person.

Oh, well. Guess we aren't all perfect. I certainly am not. I can be pretty nasty at times myself.

I have learned in my life to be careful about pushing other people down because the next person to be pushed down might be me. And it can hurt.

Kindness is a quality that it is wise to develop. Because being kind helps us to make friends. And when we do make mistakes, our friends forgive and forget them. When we indulge in unkindness, eventually we get what we deserve: unkindness from others.

Why in the world is that ancient thread being brought up today?

It's just a mean thing to do. And those who dredged it up will be sorry. That's my guess.

From one who has been there and done that.

greatest fail in the history of DU, a faceplant of epic proportions.

I think the reaction to this thread is a little overwrought.

I certainly wouldn't have started this thread, and I was surprised at who did start it.

But, "24 business hours" is a part of Pitt's legacy, and he's not going to be able to run away and hide every time someone brings it up.

What he could do is just write something like "yeah, that was a huge fuck up, I made an ass of myself, and I really was out of line in how I treated people who were rightfully skeptical of that line of bullshit. I'm embarrassed to have peddled such bullshit, and I'll try to do better. And, yes, it does seem rather comical and absurd in retrospect." That's what he should have done, years ago.

But, he's never come close to holding himself accountable for it, all the while trying to play the part of calling bullshit on everyone else.

And then he quits DU because someone mentions it?

Are we going to have posts hidden every time they contain the phrase "24 business hours" because they make our local demi-celebrity uncomfortable?

86. GBCW posts are always subject to comment.
Mon Jul 27, 2015, 02:42 PM
Jul 2015

They always have been, often because the person leaving often returns almost before leaving. As for me, I just post "bye" or "seeya" in such threads. Others, who have been around longer than I have, sometimes have other comments to make.

The bottom line is that announcing a departure from a discussion forum isn't really needed. Just slip out the back, Jack. GBCW threads are really unneeded. They're just a way for a poster to make sure everyone knows that the poster is gone. Otherwise, nobody might notice. Many people drop away from posting on this forum and others and the event passes without any foofaraw.

It's guaranteed, though, that a cryptic GBCW post will generate a long thread if the poster is a prolific poster. The posts in the thread will be a mix of people pleading for the poster not to leave and people more or less celebrating the departure. It's the nature of forums like this one that some like and some dislike almost any prolific poster.

Sometimes the pleas work and the poster doesn't actually leave. Other times, the poster returns almost immediately as though the GBCW thread never existed. In some situations, the poster shows up on some other forum to complain about the forum he or she just left. There are many forums dedicated to such complaints.

People come; people go. Sometimes they return; sometimes they don't. Sometimes they even return with a different screen name. It doesn't matter, really. Discussion and arguments continue, because that's the nature of places like DU. Forums as busy as DU barely register the leaving of someone. The discussion just goes on, because the topics are much larger than any individual.

I promise that if I leave, either voluntarily or because I can no longer physically participate, there won't be a GBCW post announcing it. My only reason to be here is to share my opinion in my posts. If I'm not here, my opinion won't be missed, because there are many people posting their opinions. I've never seen much use in GBCW posts, so I just post "bye" or "seeya" as a reply to the OP. It doesn't matter, really.

108. To elaborate a little:
Mon Jul 27, 2015, 03:21 PM
Jul 2015

I really stopped reading Pitt's posts after the POSUCS thing. I wasn't around for the discussion mentioned in this thread, so I'm not much interested in it. Flying off the handle is sort of expected, I guess, but this website is called Democratic Underground. I've never been a fan of attacking a sitting Democratic President, especially using vile language to do so.

See, I see that as more than just "flying off the handle." I see it as destructive, politically. I understand the unhappiness with a family health situation, but it turns out that wasn't Obama's fault in any way, and there was a solution available. The habit some have on DU of attaching blame for things to the President seems completely out of place here, somehow.

I don't like it, but it's not my website, so when it happens, my tendency is to discount the posts of anyone who does so, especially in a completely unjustified way. .It costs a poster who does that any trust I might have in that poster's judgment.

I don't want to operate a discussion forum. I wouldn't like that job at all. I prefer just posting on one that is more or less aligned with my political point of view. I'm a Democrat, so DU is my choice.

Calling our sitting Democratic President a "piece of shit used car salesman" steps way beyond the "flying off the handle" level of discourse. I won't listen to such things, and I don't have to. Again, I don't run a discussion forum. If I did, such a thing wouldn't stand in the first place.

So, one poster has declared that he is leaving DU. My response is simple. It is "Seeya." I'll still be here, and I haven't been reading that poster's posts anyhow. I ignore them, the old fashioned way, by simply not clicking on them.

Would that others might take the same oath to unpretentiousness.

"Just slip out the back, Jack"..., indeed.

50 Ways to Leave Your Internet Forum:

"The problem is all inside your head", she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover

She said it's really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
But I'll repeat myself, at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

Ooo slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus
Don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
Get yourself free

She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain
About the fifty ways

She said why don't we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning you'll begin to see the light
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Oh you hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

Slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
You just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee

It'd have to be a good one to hide, for me - I can't think of one, off hand. The OP reads to me like a defence of TruthOut, saying someone fed them bad information on purpose to screw them. It seems strange to bring it up after all this time, but I'm wondering if the thread starter thought this was happening with some current story too.

The alert would have needed to explain carefully why they thought it was.

How can that mean anything other than a suggestion that they were set up?

because someone alerted *on the OP*.

I hadn't thought to look to see if you were on DU when this happened. Well, it was quite a big thing, and I would say the consensus was that Jason Leopold was lying through his ass, and Pitt was defending him as his associate, but was pretty nasty to many people. And the OP thinks Leopold, and thus TruthOut and Pitt with him, was set up. Personally, I don't think they were a big enough operation for the level of sources they were claiming to have bothered doing such a thing. Leopold's reporting has been controversial at various places he's worked, and I think he just guessed what would happen, claimed to have solid sources, and then turned out to be wrong - and then the ridiculous "24 business hours" claim was made, and people started laughing.

110. best to avoid names to avoid getting hides for callouts
Mon Jul 27, 2015, 03:25 PM
Jul 2015

Long story short, back in 2006 a couple of truthout.org reporters--including one who still posts here--posted on a Friday that Karl Rove had been indicted and that he had been given "24 hours to get his affairs in order."

But, then, after 24 hours had passed, and Karl Rove was still living life in his normal and evil manner, with no sign of an indictment, then the spin--pushed at DU by a certain DUer, was that "in point of fact, those 24 hours are "business hours," i.e. starting on Monday.

In other words, presumably, 3 working days starting on Monday of the following week. If one presumes 8 hours in a working day. As if any legal notice anywhere were denominated in business hours, not business days or simply hours (e.g. 72 hours).

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027013022#post10

http://truth-out.org/archive/component/k2/item/62791:karl-rove-indicted-on-charges-of-perjury-lying-to-investigators

As ludicrous as it seems, a lot of people actually bought the "24 business hours" line--against what should have been their better judgment.

But some began to express skepticism and disbelief over the weekend. Including Skinner, the owner of Democraticunderground.com. Which induced a pretty epic temper tantrum accusing the site owner of being "no better than the cretins who have taken over your site." (post was deleted).

Of course, as history has revealed, Karl Rove was never indicted, and the truthout.org story was a complete hoax.

There's never been any explanation as to who the source behind the hoax was or why the hoax was promoted so vigorously.

But those who were skeptical and called bullshit have never been forgiven for disbelieving the bullshit.

There are assholes on DU who keep dossiers on people they dislike and constantly drudge up stupid old shit about a disagreement they had 2, 4, 8, 10 years ago. To those stalky McStalkers:

118. "There's never been any explanation..." THAT'S a big reason that "24 business hours" lives on
Mon Jul 27, 2015, 03:40 PM
Jul 2015

There never was any explanation. The story and its subsequent defenses were stated with a kind of religious certainty. When it all fizzled, there was no explanation. Multiple sources, they said. Well, what about that? Fact checked to death, they said. And so? There was never an explanation. There was never a formal accounting. There was never an eloquent OP with clever epigrams that set out the circumstances of the story. It was sloughed off and abandoned.

To offer such certitude, to pile up defenses and insults, to stake one's whole then-growing reputation on something, then to retreat into a haze? And gab it up as if nothing happened?

Yes, that's why 24 business hours remains with those of us who saw it unfold.

Mon Jul 27, 2015, 09:08 PM
Jul 2015

I thought it was funny at the time and I still think it's a bit funny, primarily because it was never explained.

The story was ludicrous. The defenses of it were ridiculous. The parsing of "24 business hours" was easily one of the greatest exhibitions of desire informing invention that this board has ever seen.

As I noted upthread, the craziness and weird behavior behind "Fitzmas" was more a symptom of our inability to politically harm Rove than anything else. It seems almost quaint now.

In any case, if you live in public, you're going to publicly step in your own shit from time to time, and people are gonna remember it and goof on it. That's life. I don't know why the OP brought this up again, but it's part of the history of this site.

Pitt and Leopold should have come clean on everything and that includes their source. They should have burned the source or explained why they didn't burn him/her. Or they should have apologized and explained why they missed it. Even if they had said it was a guess and they shouldn't have done that. Whatever it was.

But at least something should have been done. Some kind of mea culpa. Maybe explain that the sources got it wrong, or the sources were right but something changed at the last minute, or there was some kind of miscommunication.

lied. I would go to jail or take the heat otherwise.

I wonder if that is what happened here, that Pitt and/or Leopold think the source lied but aren't sure. Then you're fucked, because I wouldn't burn the source then either. But I would at least say, look, we had a source that we thought was iron-clad but that source turned out to be wrong.

You have to say something.

Somehow I don't think this thread went the way you thought it would go. Both news sources thoroughly discredited themselves in lunging after vaporware. Journalists are supposed to vet their sources very very carefully. The impulse to "get the story" must be tempered by a concern for credibility.
