Devastated to report the passing of JackpineRadical

I met Jim Peterson (JackpineRadical) through DU at least 13 years ago. We live about an hour and a half apart, but close enough to show up at the same Democratic party events regularly and to stay in touch off of DU as well. Even so, I knew him but not so well as I would have liked. He was as amazing in person as he was on DU. He was a Vietnam vet. He was a psychiatrist who spent a good deal of his life working with people charged with crimes and those convicted in prison. Even though he was retired now, he worked when he wanted, taking on psych evals when when a friend in the legal world sought his expertise and testimony. He understood what motivated people to do good things as much as he understood what motivated them to do terrible things. He dedicated himself to making the world a better place by going places few of us would be willing to tread.

His heart was enormous. His mind, which he shared with so many here, was fascinating. His big smile was ever-present and slightly mischievous. His skill for mocking stupidity through understatement and sarcasm were beyond anything I've ever seen. He loved sharing his letters to the editor with me and I loved reading them. He tested people with his crazy sharp wit. If you got it, if you did that double take, if you laughed, he was a fast friend. He and his wife, my husband MadAsHell and I stayed late at several Dem dinners talking about topics too numerous to count and would have stayed til dawn if they didn't start shutting off the lights.

The last couple of years we hadn't seen much of each other. My life got crazy and I didn't end up going his direction as much as I used to. But we did check in on DU with each other here and there.

When that genie grants my wish to have dinner with any 12 people of my choosing all through time, Jim will be there at my side.

I will miss you, my dear friend Jackpine. Rest in peace, Jim.

Jim passed Thursday evening, June 11th. There will be a memorial service for him on June 27th. Anyone who would like to express their sympathy can do so through this funeral home page for Jim.

http://www.pedersonvolker.com/obituary.phtml/E780EA29/james_m_peterson/

I will also share the link to this post with his widow, Carla.

Edited to add this in tribute to Jim - in his own words...

25 Random things about me (Jackpine Radical)
January 27, 2009 at 7:31pm

1. I get a great deal of satisfaction out of playing with a tractor.

2. I have had peak experiences at various times since I was a small child. These events have always happened when I was in contact with natural things, and have involved a sense of unity pervading the universe and incorporating me—like being part of a fractal design in which small elements are replicated “all the way up.”

3. My wife is trying to convince me that my memory is getting bad but she is wrong.

4. I would probably have accomplished more in life if I could have focused all my attention in some narrow area instead of being interested in everything.

5. I think my nervous system came pre-wired for rural life. Living in cities for too long is not good for me. Too much aversive stimulation (random, clanging ugly noises, garish flashing lights, masses of people) and too little beauty (sunsets, sunlight sparkling on water, wind in the trees, bird and animal sounds and flashes of movement). In the city, my senses shut down, limiting my awareness of my surroundings; in the country, my awareness of my surroundings expands to absorb the spiritual nourishment of the natural world.

6. My wife is trying to convince me that my memory is getting bad but she is wrong.

7. I lived most of my life in a time before personal computers, used to write my college papers on a manual typewriter, and analyzed my PhD dissertation data on a computer that filled an entire building but had less computing capacity than the Macbook in my lap right now.

8. I was about 50 when the Internet first became available to me on a very slow (2400 baud) phone connection in 1994. We got wireless broadband at home in 2005. Now, I can hardly remember what life was like before broadband.

9. Within the past year I have made contact with two branches of my family that I hardly knew existed. One branch lives in northern Saskatchewan, and the other in Idaho and Washington State. I now have pictures of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother, who were born in Denmark in the 1840's.

10. If I were able to eliminate one kind of thing from the Earth, I would have a lot of trouble deciding what should go: deerflies, black mold, or Republicans.

11. I have too many books, too many papers, and too many tractors.

12. I have a persistent feeling that I should be writing something significant, but I don't know what it is.

13. I wish there were a way to train box elder bugs to kill Japanese beetles and then commit suicide.

14. I like hats.

15. I can't imagine why anybody would bother to learn the names of all the major-league baseball players. Not even the names of all the players on one team.

16. I really don't understand football. It seems like it would be a lot easier on everybody if they gave each team a ball.

17. My wife is trying to convince me that my memory is getting bad but she is wrong.

18. I think there should be a 12-step program for Internet addicts. There should also be 3-step groups for people with Attention Deficit Disorder. And 47-step groups for obsessive-compulsives.

19. I still have the snow shoes I used in high school, and they are still in good shape (although I am not).

20. I have discovered that I am property. My main roles in life involve serving as doorperson and treat provider for a large orange dog.

21. I look at the future with a strange mix of fear for what might be (people of my generation grew up hearing the horror stories of the Depression years from our parents) and of hope for what could be. I think we are at one of those turning points in history. The right choice will lead to a path of appropriate technology and spiritual metamorphosis. The other choice will lead to unimaginable ruin, and maybe another mass extinction of species.

22. What are you supposed to do with all those little wall-wart transformers that you accumulate over the years? It seems wrong to just throw them out, even if you don't know what they will fit, and probably no longer own the devices they came with.

23. Irma Bombeck once defined a calorie as a measure of the delectability of food. She was right.

24. Gus often wants to go out and bark at things we cannot see. I sometimes wonder if he is hallucinating. Maybe we have a seriously psychotic dog on our hands. How would we know?

25. My nose seldom itches except when I am trying to meditate.

And I didn't ask. The death notice at the link I shared says he died at home. Perhaps a sudden event. But then again Jim probably wouldn't have told us if he were having life-threatening health issues either. He'd rather talk about other things.

Star Member Jackpine Radical (45,274 posts)
13. Yes, interesting. The race gambit is pretty obvious.

I noticed this story too & saw it for what it was. It's unavoidable; it's true--he DID say that, and I don't think it was a bad thing for him to say, but a whole lot of people don't or choose not to, see it that way. One just hopes that everyone gets to see enough of the uncensored Bernie to make their own minds up about him.

116. He was somebody that I would have loved to meet personally

And after reading his 25 random things I'm even sorrier that I never got the chance to do so. His ability to get right to the nucleus of any issue was uncanny and his sense of humor was quick and keen.

Being a Vietnam vet, I suspect he was a bit younger than me, as I served from 1960 to 63. It seems that almost weekly I hear of someone who went to high school or worked with me passing away. My generation is dropping like flies and it's a bit depressing.

It's even more depressing when it's an old person with a young worldview like Jackpine Radical. I will miss him.

RIP, JPR.

132. Here is something Jim posted a long time ago that he just sent me

Just in the last couple weeks. He didn't send a link though. Some advice for the primaries. He planned to post it again.

"Things were a lot lighter in that era, despite all the heat.
Here's something of mine from back then:

The 12 Suggested Steps of DUmmies Unanimous

1. We admitted we were powerless over GD--that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could tombstone us at will.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Skinner as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of those holding or advocating opposing opinions.

5. Admitted to the Magistrate the exact nature of their wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have The Admin remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Them to remove our tombstones and reinstate us.

8. Made a list of all persons whom we had put on Ignore or whose threads we had hijacked, and became willing to fake amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would entail inconveniences on our part.

10. Continued to take inventory of opposing doctrines and their proponents and when they were wrong promptly tried to make them admit it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with Admin, as we understood Them, praying only that they would overlook our flamewars and personal attacks.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to the trolls, Morans and FReepers. "

RIP Jim.

And one of the reasons why is that so many times I only discover who and what they were after they are gone.

I've found so many similarities among fellow DU'ers. Tractors, rural living, having a brain that works.

He replied to something I said last week, and it felt so good. I'd like to say "thank you" even if it may be too late now.

Thank you for being a part of this forum; this greater mind. We really did make something. We shared.

As many people leave DU, and DU takes up new people, some of whom are very much the people take "make DU suck", it is dad to see one of DU's bright, strong lights go out.

The best tribute is to make sure the void he leaves is NOT filled by someone less radical, but to keep the light going. I am nowhere near as qualified, but I will do my part.

Thank you for posting this glorious tribute. Even though the news is terribly sad and untimely, JackpineRadical lives on in many DUers hearts. He was clearly a remarkable man. Maybe more like a force of nature. I hope his family sees this outpouring and that it gives them a measure of peace. He will be missed by us all.

280. I couldn't post anything less for Jackpine.

I knew he was loved here, but I admit I am surprised by all the threads his loss has kicked up. I will be sure to share all of them with his wife. I don't know how soon the family will feel like visiting and reading of all the people he touched here, but I know eventually they will.

203. I met Jim two years ago when we had dinner in Fond du Lac. A delightful man, full of life ...

... a proud progressive who truly cared about others.

I saw him last fall at Fighting BobFest and he looked more frail than the first time we met, said his back was bothering him.

We got together a couple other times to break bread, discuss politics and life and generally enjoy one another's company. I shall miss him. We had talked of getting together again soon.

Thanks, sybylla, for posting this sad news and the self-analysis that is so typical of Jim.

RIP Jackpine.

268. so...it doesn't seem right just to say a little thing...

Jackpine Radical added so much and really inspired me.

i started coming here when i lived in a place that isolated me from solid, in-depth discussion of ideas. Jackpine is one person who kept my brain engaged, and it felt good when he'd come into my threads to drop some comments. felt like we were pulling up digital rocking chairs and chewing the fat, and we need more of that in our digital lives.

this digital space we create for ourselves is important. the people here are real, and they mean something to us. i know that on one level we're just ones-and-zeros on a screen, but Jackpine meant something to me, as so many of you do. i feel such loss knowing he's passed, but i'm very happy to have been able to know him here.

sigh. just had to get that out.

I feel like one of the legs has been pulled out from under Democratic Underground. He was like a brother that I wish I could be like.

Rest in peace, Jackpine Radical, and I want his family to know what a beloved and respected person he was.

It will never be the same around here. We need his humor, his intelligence, and his vast contribution during the upcoming election season.

307. Never give up, Jim. That whole "rest in peace" thing? Bullshit.

Last edited Mon Jun 15, 2015, 03:14 PM - Edit history (1)

The good ones, like you, find joy and inspiration in accomplishing the many things, large and small, that make this world a better place.

Whatever part of your spirit passes on to whatever is next, I know that you'll not be content to "rest." Peace, yes, certainly, and may the parts of your spirit that remain connected to those who love you channel that peace here where it is so much needed.

But "rest?"

You're not gonna do that, I know. You'll be finding your version of the metaphysical Tractor Of Amazingness and doing all the many things, large and small, that make where you are a better place.

But you will be sorely missed, here.

By me and so many others.

sadly,
Bright

I'm glad you removed the n/t, otherwise I would have missed reading the lovely, moving words in your post.

I very much dislike that whole "rest in peace" stuff, too. Those who leave this mortal coil are flying free and soaring through the Universe. They have no need of "rest".

But I miss him terribly...

You will be missed enormously.
Peace

I must share this. This is after his reading of my story of how I met my wife shortly after returning from VN, how I was bug nuts from the war and how we stayed in touch, sorta, and married 20 years later. The parallels and all

" There are amazing parallels in our histories, down to the 2 stepsons & 1 granddaughter.

After Nam I knew I was too much of a mess to inflict myself on some poor woman. I first met my wife in about 1973, introduced her to the man (vet friend) who was to become her short-term second husband, & ended up marrying her in '88. She's still around. I could hear her rummaging in the closet a bit ago. Oldest son & LT partner will be up from Chicago Sat. for a week. They're usually with us 3 weeks of the year--Mem Day, Labor Day & Xmas. "

382. I've opened this thread probably a dozen times since first seeing it.

Each time I've tried to write a thoughtful response to this awful news, and each time I've come up dry. It's funny, because I don't think I ever directly interacted with Jackpine, but I always thought of him as one of the best people on this site. He was intelligent, caring, and kind to everyone. This site will suffer from the loss of him.

383. And by trying again, you have succeeded in offering a warm and thoughtful response to

this tragic news.

This is indeed a profound loss for this community.

385. Oh My, I really liked him...

he had a sound-minded sense in his posts, he was warm to others here and saved his ridicule for politicians who deserved every bit of his disdain.

RIP friend.

390. I am still in shock over this news, hoping it wasn't true.

He was one of DU's best, imo. A reason to come here.

May his loved ones find peace, though it will be hard to do.

RIP Jackpine, I know we will be thinking of you for a very long time with both sadness and gratitude that we had a chance to know you
