(11,175 posts)One of the garbage cans is labeled "Tom Foley" but Speaker Foley was a Democrat and I don't remember hearing any sex-scandal allegations about him. The cartoonist probably meant to include Bob Livingston, the Republican who probably would have become Speaker if his adultery hadn't been uncovered just then.

(11,175 posts)An interesting tidbit from your link, though, is the information about role in the Mark Foley scandal played by the then-Speaker... one Dennis Hastert. In fact, in the separate linked Wikipedia article about the scandal, Hastert's name appears 78 times!
I particularly liked this passage:
Still, I think would-be Speaker Bob Livingston has a legitimate grievance about being omitted from the cartoon. Mark Foley was never married, but Livingston admitted to having committed adultery.

(1,560 posts)Tom Foley's only "scandal" was to be the first sitting Speaker to lose a re-election bid in over 100 years.
Bit of a dust-up over term limits with the voters back home in Washington state.
....of course the Dems had other wounds to dress after the spanking they got in that election of 1994.
