Married Georgia teacher had threesome with students in classroom, another tryst at local Waffle House: police

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/married-teacher-bedded-students-classroom-waffle-house-police-article-1.1729783

A married Georgia high school teacher had a threesome with two students in a classroom, then met up with one of the students at a Waffle House for another sexual tryst, prosecutors say.

Lori Quigley, 41, faces several sexual assault charges in the case — and authorities fear there may be other victims.

"We think there's more out there," Major Danny Lowe of the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office told WAWS-TV. "The charges are serious, all three felonies.”

Quigley resigned from her position as math teacher at McIntosh County Academy earlier this month and was then arrested at her Brunswick home last week.

That is the effect of the rape culture you insist doesn't exist, except suddenly you care when the victim is male. You must have worked hard to ignore the use of sexual language regarding the rape of women and girls. Perhaps you should consider spending less time claiming that rape prevention campaigns amount to "haranguing men" and instead focused on the brutality of the crime itself.

New Georgia law bans sex between teachers and students, despite student's consent

ATLANTA -- Legislation Gov. Sonny Perdue signed into law Friday aims to close what sponsors called a loophole created by a Supreme Court decision that exonerated an Augusta teacher who was convicted of sex with a student.

The state's highest court ruled last year that a law that prohibited sex between teachers and students included a defense for any teacher prosecuted if the student testified it was consensual. The court concluded the fact that the law at the time specifically excluded consent in other circumstances and not in the case of a teacher, that the General Assembly must have intended consent to be a valid defense.

The rationale is that no matter even if the student is 18 years old, the student is in a power relationship with the teacher, and can get abused because of that. It's the same way for doctors. I'm not sure about lawyers and other professionals. It probably is that way for lawyers.

Sexual consent laws have always included exceptions. You can't consent to sex with a close relative. You can't consent to sex with a law enforcement officer if you have been arrested or detained. You can't consent to sex with doctors who are treating you. The laws recognize that, even though you may be legally able to have consensual intercourse with anybody you choose, consent is prohibited in situations where imbalanced power relationships can lead to abuse. It doesn't mater if you're 16 or 36...if the law says you can't give consent, then you can't give consent, and the other person is committing a crime if they touch you.

Teacher/student relationships have long been one of these exceptions. It would have been perfectly legal for this woman to pick up these 16 and 17 year old boys at the local park for her sexual orgies, but it's a crime for her to pick up on her own students for that kind of thing. She cannot use her position of power, as a teacher, to obtain sexual consent from ANY students under her authority.

This article is a great example of social double standards.

The "relationship" between the teacher and those students is treated as a peer or near-peer relationship, therefore she shouldn't be accountable for her actions in the same way a grown man should be. Also, the boys in question aren't entitled to the same degree or type of protection that "over 16 year old" girls are.

But certainly not in the title.

These stories make me angry, both as a respectable teacher and as the parent of a 17 year old girl.

However, from a purely intellectual level, I find the article to be sexist both against her and in her favor at the same time. For instance, if this had been a male teacher, they probably would have written something much closer to "pedophile tapes two girls in classroom," which definitely would have been worse. However, using words like "married" and "threesome" is just to make it tawdry and shaming. She's already going to lose her career, her family, and her freedom, so is there really a need to public ally shame her as well?

Mon Mar 24, 2014, 11:21 PM

That seems somewhat worse than a public shaming. We've seen such exhortations on DU many times over. Nothing in all the world is worse than a male pedophile. Hell, even an accused male pedophile deserves nothing but our hatred and rage, and the same goes for anyone who might suggest that the accused has a right to a trial...

Upon reflection, however, I agree that the title almost certainly wouldn't have identified a male teacher as a husband but would certainly have identified him as a father (if he were). As you say, the aggressor in this case will both suffer for and benefit from sexism.
